Dogal Afetler ve Cevre Dergisi , 2016, DOI: 10.21324/dacd.25533
Abstract: In this study, severe damage types in concrete buildings observed after earthquakes were classified and investigated in relation to the structural behaviors. Since the damage types are very extensive, particularly heavy damages caused by column and combination of beam-column damages were discussed. Classification is made primarily in the form of damage types of the structural system and damages of structural elements. Classification of damage types of structural system was grouped as 1) Overlap collapse related damages, 2) Lateral collapse (accordion) damages, 3) Tilting damages, 4) Failure of a part on vertical alignment type damages, 5) Failure of a part of horizontal alignment type damages and 6) Horizontal failure of entire story while the damages of structural elements were grouped as 1) Out of plane deboning of column and 2) End part damages of column. Beams and floor damages, also considered as structural system damages, are not included in the scope of this study. This study summarizes precautions needed to be taken to prevent such damages studied.
Fluorosis as an Environmental Disease and its Effect on Human Health

TAF Preventive Medicine Bulletin , 2010,
Abstract: Fluoride is a halogene found in earth, water, rocks, air, plants and animal tissue in various amounts. In normal conditions, people daily take fluoride compounds in amounts without any harmful effects this cause fewer dental caries and the formation of stronger bones. However, if the amount of fluoride taken daily exceeds the safety threshold, chronic fluoride intoxication, known as fluorosis, arises. As a result of fluorosis, pathological changes appear in tooths, skeletal system, liver, kidney, heart, gastrointestinal system and endocrin system. [TAF Prev Med Bull 2010; 9(3): 233-238]

Groundwater Chemistry and Assessment of Its Effect on Health from the Aspect of Medical Geology
Simge Varol,Aysen Davraz,Ercan Varol
TAF Preventive Medicine Bulletin , 2008,
Abstract: Geology and medicine are the oldest two sciences. Nowadays, medical geology is appeared to associate the researches related to environmental problems studied by geology and medical sciences. In the medical geology, researches related to effect of groundwater on human health is the most important subject. In this paper, elements which are the constituent of groundwater and health problems originated from those elements were explained. In addition, components polluting the groundwater widely were presented in detail. [TAF Prev Med Bull. 2008; 7(4): 351-356]

Severe inflammatory and keloidal, allergic reaction due to para-phenylenediamine in temporary tattoos

Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology , 2010,
Abstract: Hair coloring with henna has been popular in Turkey for years. In recent years since the tattoos are applied by the street vendors in most of the beach places in Turkey, skin coloring with henna has also increased. Henna can be used alone or in combination with other coloring agents. Henna alone can be safe but due to additives such as para-phenylenediamine (PPD), p-toluenediamine and various essential oils, allergic contact reactions may occur. We report a 22-year-old man who developed severe inflammatory and keloidal, moderately bullous allergic reaction after henna paint-on tattoo. We did a patch test separately with these painting products (henna powder, PPD) and with the European standard series. PPD was strongly positive (+++) on day 2 and remained positive for following days. After treating with topical clobetasol-17 butyrate, resolution was obtained in two weeks. But some keloidal reaction remained.
Risk Assessment of Error-Prone Personal Information in Data Quality Tools

Journal of Computers , 2011, DOI: 10.4304/jcp.6.2.155-161
Abstract: In order to assist companies dealing with data preparation problems, different approaches are developed to handle the dirty data. However, these firms are not able to predict the final outcome from the customer data, before running all the business process. This gives rise to an extra cost for the company at the end, if the data is highly corrupted. Therefore, in this paper; we propose a framework to estimate the propagation of the error through a data quality tool. Since data quality tools are a variation of the workflows, we have based our modeling on workflow schema. The reliability and the risk propagation parameters are introduced for the sequence, parallel split and conditional type of control properties that can be seen in a data quality tool. At the end, a business model is introduced and an experiment with the proposed model is given as a proof-of-concept.
Extrapulmonary Small Cell Carcinoma of Spine Presenting with a Thoracic Epidural Mass: Case Report
Hakan AK,Varol AYDIN
Journal of Neurological Sciences , 2012,
Abstract: Extrapulmonary small cell carcinomas have the same histological properties of small cell carcinoma of the lung which is a rare and distinct entity. They are seen more commonly in males and genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts are the most involved systems. Cases arising from different organs have been reported in the literature but there is only one case reporting arising from vertebrae. In this report we are presenting the second extrapulmonary small cell of spine case presenting with an epidural mass in a 35 year old woman. Our definite diagnosis was performed after surgery. Patient received chemotherapy regiment consisting of etoposide, cisplatin and zoledronic acid. Further studies are still needed for the early diagnosis and the optimal management of these tumors.
L’Empire ottoman à travers la biographie picaresque d’Eliya Karmona Ottoman empire through picaresque biography of Eliya Karmona
Marie-Christine Varol
Cahiers Balkaniques , 2012,
The fictionalized autobiography of Eliya Karmona How Eliya Karmona was born, how he grew up and how he became the director of Djugetón casts a critical eye on the tribulations of a young Jewish man in the last years of sultanate from 1884 to 1908. In sarcastic mode, with self-irony, he builds on his disappointments a picaresque novel which conforms to the law of the genre, but which has common features with other aspects of genres cultivated by Spanish Jews: accounts of travel, exemplary narratives, the treatise on the ways and customs, the fictionalized remembrances, the proverbs. Very Ottoman elements are also found there, like the private diary recounting minor deeds expenditure and receipts, which have shown concerned an Ottoman practice very useful as a source of historical information. The author has a sharp and comical critical view of gravity of the Ottoman system which obstructs every initiative, but he also criticizes the communal inflexibility which heavily constrains personal initiative, the inada
