International Journal of Morphology , 2012,
Abstract: Clinical and surgical importance of the levator scapulae muscle (LSM) requires a better knowledge of its anatomic variation mainly because of the possibility of new findings related to the embryologic development. This article reports a case of a left-sided LSM with atypical attachments in a 58-year-old preserved Caucasian female body. The muscle presented a bifurcation at its midpoint downward path. Its medial band attached to the anterior aspect of the left rhomboideus major muscle while its left band was fixed in the superior angle of the scapula after releasing a muscle expansion to the serratus anterior muscle. The morphometric analysis revealed LSM maximal width of 3.6 cm, bifurcation point located 6.6 cm apart from the C1 vertebral attachment; medial band legth of 5.7 cm and lateral band width of 2.1cm. Regarding anatomic variations of the LSM, they may remain unnoticed or perhaps contribute for pathologic conditions of the neck and the back.

Abstract: objective: to develop an experimental model of global normothermic ischemia able to demonstrate the transient ischemia and reperfusion periods required for development of ischemia/reperfusion injury in the small intestines of wistar rats by clamping the abdominal aorta. methods: twenty adult male wistar rats weighing 250-350g were randomly divided into five groups with four rats each and submitted to increasing times of ischemia (0 - 30 - 45 - 60 - 90 minutes). within each group, except the control one, two rats underwent 60 minutes of reperfusion and two 90 minutes. after the procedures, histological analysis was conducted by measurement of areas of necrosis. results: the degree of intestinal necrosis ranged from 15% to 54% (p = 0.0004). there was progressive increase in the degree of injury related to increase in ischemic time. however, greater degrees of injury were observed in the lowest times of reperfusion. the analysis of the coefficient of variation of necrosis among the ten groups of ischemia/reperfusion showed a statistically significant difference in 15 areas, 13 related to the control group. conclusion: the model was able to show the periods required for the occurrence of ischemia/reperfusion injury by aortic clamping and can serve as a basis to facilitate the development of studies that aim at understanding this kind of injury.
Effect of the intracerebroventricular administration of GR 113808, a selective 5-HT4 antagonist, on water intake during hyperosmolarity and hypovolemia

Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research , 2001,
Abstract: We demonstrate here that acute third ventricle injections of GR 113808, a highly selective 5-HT4 antagonist, decrease water intake induced by a previous salt load while potentiating drinking elicited by hypovolemia induced by previous subcutaneous administration of polyethylene glycol in male Wistar rats (200 ± 20 g). At the dose of 160 nmol/rat, third ventricle injections of GR 113808 induced a significant reduction of water intake in salt-loaded animals after 120 min as compared to salt-loaded animals receiving third ventricle injections of saline (salt load + GR = 3.44 ± 0.41 ml, N = 12; salt load + saline = 5.74 ± 0.40 ml, N = 9). At the dose of 80 nmol/rat, GR 113808 significantly enhanced water intake in hypovolemic animals after 120 min as compared to hypovolemic animals receiving third ventricle injections of saline (hypovol + GR = 4.01 ± 0.27 ml, N = 8; hypovol + saline = 2.41 ± 0.23 ml, N = 12). We suggest that central 5-HT4 receptors may exert a positive drive on water intake due to hyperosmolarity and a negative input on drinking provoked by hypovolemia.

Abstract: The development of computers brought an increase in the number of software programs with a great potential to assist in the task of teaching engineering, among them are: Mathcad , Mathematica , Matlab , Maple and Polymath. Several articles have been published with the aim of demonstrating the advantages of using these softwares, as well comparing their performance. The most recent books have clearly indicated the importance of these tools in engineering. Even so, however, the computer has not become a strong helper of the student in solving more complex engineering problems. The point of view presented in this article is a result of over twenty years of teaching in Chemical Engineering. In our opinion, the fact that students know to use a specific software program (syntax) is a necessary condition for solving engineering problems, but not sufficient if the student do not think in a systematic way. The methodology recommended in this article is applied for the resolution of the problem in modules and can be used in both simple and complex problems.

Ciência Animal Brasileira , 2012,
Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of using sorghum silages with and without tannin as a substitute for corn silage on performance and carcass characteristics of feedlot sheep. We used 18 whole, Santa Ines, male lambs, distributed in a completely randomized design with three treatments: sorghum with tannin in grain silage (SCT), sorghum without tannin in grain silage (SST); and corn silage (SM). The forage: concentrate ratio was 70:30, and we used a commercial concentrate with 19% CP and 75% TDN. The dry matter intake (DMI) for the treatment SCT, SST, and SM were 1.03, 1.20 and 0.85 kg / day, respectively, and the SCT was similar to the others, but the SST was higher than SM. The sheep which consumed the SST diet had higher average daily weight gain (DWG) and total average gain (153.72 g and 8.61 kg) than those consuming SCT (111.19 and 6.23 kg) and SM (94.40 g and 5.46kg). There was no difference in feed conversion (FC) between diets. The carcass traits were not influenced by the type of silage consumed. The SCT can be used as the only roughage in the diet of sheep in confinement, without changing the DMI, FC and carcass characteristics. However, animals that consumed the SST had higher DWG.
