Behavioral and Experiential Self-Regulations in Psychological Well-Being under Proximal and Distal Goal Conditions  [PDF]

This study examined the relationship of goal-related components of cybernetic, behavioral, and experiential self-regulations to psychological well-being under two types of conditions, the pursuit of intrinsic goals in general and specific intrinsic goals for the academic term. In an online survey, undergraduates (N = 186) completed global measures of psychological well-being, behavioral and experiential self-regulations, and rated themselves on goal-related self-regulatory components. Correlations indicated that most of the cybernetic, behavioral and experiential self-regulatory variables were associated with each other and with well-being. In terms of the goal-related self-regulatory components, when pursuing intrinsic goals more generally, the experiential self-regulatory component of enjoyment of the activity predicted well-being. However, when pursuing intrinsic term goals, the cybernetic self-regulatory component of perceived goal progress and the behavioral self-regulatory component of self-reinforcement for goal progress predicted well-being. The findings extend theoretical conceptualizations of psychological well-being by integrating compatibilities between cybernetic, behavioral, experiential self-regulatory processes and motivational conditions.

Variation of Hyporheic Temperature Profiles in a Low Gradient Third-Order Agricultural Stream—A Statistical Approach  [PDF]

Abstract: Sediment size governs advection, controlling the hydraulic conductivity of the stratum, and conduction, influencing the amount of surface area in contact between the sediment particles. To understand the role of sediment particle size on thermal profiles within the hyporheic zone, a statistical approach, involving general summary statistics and time series cross-correlation, was employed. Data were collected along two riffles: Site 1: gravel (d50 = 3.9 mm) and Site 2: sand (d50 =0.94 mm).Temperature probe grids collected 15-minute temperature data at 30, 60, 90, and140cm below the streambed surface over a 6 month period. Surface water and air temperature were recorded. Diel temperature signal penetration depth was limited to the upper 30cm of the streambed and was driven by advection. Surface seasonal trends were detected at greater depths, indicating that thermal pulses are transmitted initially by advection and by conduction to areas deeper in the hyporheic zone. Site 1 showed a high degree of thermal heterogeneity via a localized downwelling zone within a gaining stream environment. Site 2 exhibited a vertically and horizontally homogenized thermal environment attributed to an increased amount of sand sediments that limited advection and significant groundwater discharge that mediated the effects of downwelling surface water.
Developing an Expert and Reflexive Approach to Problem-Solving: The Place of Emotional Knowledge and Skills  [PDF]

Abstract: Nowadays it is widely accepted that mathematics and, especially, problemsolving tasks, are particularly concerned by the issue of emotions. Yet, educational interventions designed to improve students’ problem-solving competence and performance still mainly focus on cognitive and metacognitive knowledge and skills. The main purpose of this study was to design and assess the benefit of a training program that promotes the development of not only cognitive but also emotional knowledge and skills. This benefit was assessed using four variables, namely, problem-solving performance, problem-solving competence, academic emotions and emotion regulation strategies. 428 fifth and sixth graders took part in the study, split into four conditions: 1) a “cognition” condition which received an intervention on an eight-step problemsolving process; 2) an “emotion” condition in which emotional knowledge and skills were developed through various activities; 3) an “emotion and cognition” condition overlapping the two previous ones, and 4) a “control” condition. The findings showed that the “emotion and cognition” condition and the “cognition” condition had equivalent cognitive efficiency. However, only the former reduced negative emotions, aroused the emergence of positive ones, promoted the use of adaptive emotion regulation strategies and discouraged the use of maladaptive ones. The practical implications for educational practices and possible avenues for further research are discussed.

Abstract: the increase in women?s participation in the labour market over recent decades allows us to consider implications of changed situations not only within work but also on the margins of the labour market and when unemployed. this paper considers women?s coping strategies when unemployed in light of other roles that they might hold. by utilising the example of the formerly socialist, eastern part of germany, where women?s involvement in the labour market was encouraged and even enforced, underlying assumptions about how women cope with unemployment are analysed. the centrality of employment in east german unemployed women?s biographies results in responses to redundancy that differ from those in the west. it is suggested that the social construction of gender via work identities and the individual and social importance attached to employment are central when determining the responses and coping strategies of the unemployed. moreover, there are indications that alternatives to employment can include work based and non-gendered roles.

Abstract: nietzsche’s “aristocratic radicalism” has been interpreted to mean either that nietzsche favors returning to pre-modern political models of aristocratic society which are completely incompatible with modern democracy, or that aristocratism is a radical variant of liberal individualism, an aesthetic and apolitical attitude towards life. in this paper i argue that nietzsche’s aristocratism fits neither of the above interpretations. rather, nietzsche understands aristocratic society in spiritual-cultural terms. in the light of an analysis of nobility, an aristocratic society and culture must be a horizontal ordering of equally respected powers for and against each other that aims at the elevation of the significance of the singular individual’s responsibility.

Abstract: this article traces the debate on the value of improvement in contemporary democratic theory through a discussion of the controversial interpretations of john rawls and stanley cavell of schopenhauer as educator by friedrich nietzsche. it argues that the readings of perfectionism offered y both rawls and cavell poorly capture the nietzschean notion of individual freedom as responsibility. the latter may turns out to be of value for modern democratic life not in virtud of, but despite the fact that it constitutes an alternative to the liberal conceptions of culture and individual freedom.

Abstract: Il est difficile de déterminer les répercussions de la génétique moderne sur le concept de maladie mentale. Des projets de recherche tentent de découvrir une corrélation statistique significative entre le diagnostique d’une maladie et des loci génétiques ou des endophénotypes. Jusqu’à présent, on n’a pas identifié d’allèles ou de mutations causant la maladie mentale. En attendant, l’expression “vulnérabilité génétique” est utilisée pour faire référence aux relations entre les bases génétiques et la maladie. Cette expression sert de paramètre temporaire et résume les relations complexes, observées en génétique moderne, entre l’ADN et la moindre fonction cellulaire. Selon des modèles génétiques complexes, telle la théorie systémique de l’ADN, il ne sera pas possible d’identifier les causes génétiques sans une connaissance précise des facteurs modulant l’expression des gènes. Ainsi, l’implication de la génétique dans le concept de maladie mentale ne pourra pas être définie sans nouvelles avancées en psychologie et biologie du développement. Aujourd’hui, la complexité des relations entre l’ADN et l’environnement n’est pas reconnue en psychologie. Des ébauches d’explications pour en développer la compréhension peuvent être apportées par les études développementales et de psycho-phylo-génèse. Un concept interdisciplinaire sur les bases biologiques de la psyché est requis.

Abstract: The wonders and riches of China brought back to England by the East Indiamen at the end of the 17th century and in the 18th century triggered a deep interest for things Chinese. Indeed, England was hit by the Chinese taste in the decorative arts, emblematised by the playful chinoiserie style. This taste nonetheless evolved during the 18th century, and although it remained very popular throughout the period, it underwent some sharp criticisms. What was the nature of the English reception of this style? Why was it so welcomed, and at the same time seen so suspicious? This paper explores the ambivalence which lay in the reception of the Chinese style, and examines what was perceived as the lure and threat of Chinese exoticism through the concepts of strangeness and foreignness.

The field of narrative studies is by nature interdisciplinary, which leads to certain strengths and weaknesses, both of which were evident during the conference. On the one hand, as a result of the myriad approaches to and definitions of narrative and narrative analysis, the conference perhaps lacked a sense of coherence. However, the conference showed that overriding this weak-ness in narrative studies is the fruitful cross-fertilization that can occur when a field is truly interdisciplinary. Thus, concepts and theories can and do travel from one discipline to another, gaining new meaning and providing new insight on the way.
