Abstract: This article presents a study of the internal consistency of questionnaire NEMS-07, designed to evaluate quality of life on tients subjected to homeopathic treatment. Cronbach's Alpha 27 items was 0.95, sub-scales also show high reliability. NEMS-07 is sufficiently concise and adequate to supply estimations o cerning health-related quality of life in outpatients under homeopathic treatment, from the standpoint of its internal consistency. NEMS-07 also showed easy applicability in the outpatientting and a very low proportion of missing response.

Abstract: The causal inference basic problem is the impossibility of comparing the effect of the exposure and the nonexposure, simultaneously, at the same individual. Hence, there are two options: examining several individuals at the same time, with analyses of the exposure and the nonexposure in different individuals (cases and controls); or evaluating the same individual at two or more points in time. The analysis of cases and controls at the same moment is the predominant situation in clinical and epidemiologic conventional research. In this study, we discuss the use of controls in homeopathy and propose the use of the subjects as their own controls, presenting some aspects of three designs that already use this approach, following the case-base paradigm: the self-controlled clinical trials and the case-crossover and case-time-control studies. We also discuss their potential for homeopathic clinical research and review proposals of statistical inference and analysis.

Abstract: There is little evidence on the relationship between leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and built environment in Brazil, especially in areas of low socioeconomic status. The objective of this study was to describe indicators of built environment score related to LTPA for adults living in a region of low socioeconomic status. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 767 adults living in Ermelino Matarazzo district in S o Paulo, 2007. The dependent variable was the practice of LTPA (in minutes per week). Independent variables were 35 environment variables that were evaluated by an audit instrument in 30 census tracts. LTPA was correlated (Spearman coefficient) with all environment variables, and variables that had p<0.20 were selected to compose two scores (variables with p<0.05 had weight value of 2): Infrastructure (score 1) and Safety for commuting (score 2). Both scores were divided in quintiles and the built environment was composed by the sum of the quintiles of these scores, ranging from 2 to 10 points. Quartiles of built environment were calculated and the first was considered as the most adequate environment for LTPA. The built environment score had 14 variables significantly associated with LTPA and were considered as important attributes for this leisure practice.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to verify the validity of the perception of environ-ment scale for engagement in physical activity in adult population. Two samples were drawn: the first, to compare the scale results with built environment and engagement in physical activity (767 individuals with 18 years or more); and the latter, for the analyses of repeat-ability (30 individuals with 60 years or more). Both studies were carried out in Ermelino Matarazzo District, eastern zone of the city of S o Paulo. The perception of environment scale was developed based on the NEWS scale and on a social support for physical activity scale, and the final version comprised 38 questions. Data analysis: The scale results were compared to built environment and physical activity level, and for repeatability measure. The correlation coefficients for questions varied from r=0.51 to r=0.89, and for scores they varied from r=0.72 to r=0.94. There was significant agreement between means of percep-tion of environment score of facilities for physical activity and the respective classification of built environment (p<0.001). The individuals who had any engagement in leisure-time physical activities had higher means for the scores of facilities (p<0.001), safe perception (p=0.033), and social support (p=0.001). The scale provided reliable and valid results for assessing the perception of environment for physical activity, mainly for the perception of the facilities of the environment.

There is already a great number of practical experiences with agroecological transition in the coffee plant (Coffea arabica L.), in small properties at the South region of Minas Gerais state, which inspired this research. The experiment was installed in a coffee crop (variety Catuaí Amarelo, spacing 4.0 x 0.7 m and 6 years) agelocated in Lavras, (Minas Gerais state, Brazil). After the first year of agroecologic transition, the effects of organic and conventional management in the nutrition and productivity were evaluated. The experimental design used was the lattice balanced 4x4 in factorial scheme 3x2x2 with five replications and four additional treatments. The used organic management is efficient in the supply of N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Mn, B, Zn, Cu, and Fe for the coffee plant in production. The treatments of organic management showed a similar productivity to theconventional one due to the existence of nutrient reserves in the soil.
