Pérdida de Ozono en Líneas de Flujo Poliméricas: PVC y Silicona Ozone Loss in Polymer Flow Lines: PVC and Silicone

Abstract: El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la interacción entre el ozono y el material de la tubería usada para su transporte, usualmente polimérica, a fin de determinar las pérdidas de ozono durante el proceso. Para este propósito, una mezcla gaseosa de ozono-oxígeno se hizo fluir a través de dos tipos de tubería, PVC y silicona, desde el generador de ozono hasta el punto de recolección. La concentración de ozono en la mezcla gaseosa y el flujo volumétrico de la corriente gaseosa fueron variadas para cada experimento. El flujo másico de ozono fue medido en el punto de recolección, aplicando el método yodométrico por titulación indirecta. La pérdida de ozono fue observada en ambas tuberías. Estas pérdidas están asociadas a la reacción química entre el ozono y el material de la tubería, como también a la auto descomposición del ozono. The aim of this present study was to evaluate the interaction between the ozone and the pipe material used for transporting it, usually of polymeric material, to then determine ozone loss during the process. For this purpose, a mixture of ozone-oxygen was transported through two types of pipes, PVC and silicone, from the ozone generator to the point of collection. The ozone concentration in the gas mixture and volumetric flow of the gas stream were varied for each experiment. The ozone mass flow was measured at the point of collection, applying the iodometric method by indirect titration. Ozone loss was observed in both pipes. These losses are associated with the chemical reaction between ozone and the pipe material, as well as to the ozone self-decomposition.
INVAP's Nuclear Calculation System

Abstract: Since its origins in 1976, INVAP has been on continuous development of the calculation system used for design and optimization of nuclear reactors. The calculation codes have been polished and enhanced with new capabilities as they were needed or useful for the new challenges that the market imposed. The actual state of the code packages enables INVAP to design nuclear installations with complex geometries using a set of easy-to-use input files that minimize user errors due to confusion or misinterpretation. A set of intuitive graphic postprocessors have also been developed providing a fast and complete visualization tool for the parameters obtained in the calculations. The capabilities and general characteristics of this deterministic software package are presented throughout the paper including several examples of its recent application. 1. Introduction INVAP utilizes a proprietary software package to design nuclear installations such as research reactors, radio-isotopes production reactors, and nuclear power plants. With every project, the codes became more flexible and user-friendly to the point that the two graphic postprocessors provide intuitive and self-explanatory 1D, 2D, and 3D (currently in development) representation of the variables involved in the calculation and the results obtained. This software package includes the following.(i)CONDOR,??a??cell??code??which performs neutronic calculation of fuel assemblies of nuclear reactor cores and produces sets of data, like the homogenized and condensed cross-sections to be used in the reactor (or core) code.(ii)CITVAP, a reactor code which performs neutronic burnup-dependent calculation of nuclear reactor cores, calculating the nuclear parameters associated with several states of the reactor taking into account the feedback of many thermal-hydraulic parameters. INVAP has a nodal reactor code in development which uses automatic pinpower reconstruction.(iii)ESINLM, a nuclear data library manager which performs the update and upgrades of the nuclear data required. (iv)HXS, a library manager which provides the link library between the cell code and the reactor code allowing the user to create or modify the data library to be used in the reactor code.(v)POSCON and FLUX, two graphic postprocessors which enable the user to view in a fast and easy way the calculated parameters of both the cell code and the reactor code and export information and graphics from the respective databases.(vi)Several utility programs that serve specific functions to ease the interface with the user by graphically

Abstract: The earthquakes and the subsequent “revolutions” in regulations about structural analysis, which involved Italy in the last decade, allowed a renewed sensitivity to the maintenance and enhancement of common buildings. For several years, the scientific community was wondering about how to preserve not only the safety of people who live there, but also the social and administrative functions which is carried out inside historical city centers. From this point of view, this paper aims to show how an adequate knowledge of constructive techniques and building transformations can be the beginning of a process aimed at the development of planning guidelines for the conservation of historical towns from seismic risk. Gli eventi sismici e le conseguenti “rivoluzioni” normative in termini di analisi delle strutture, che hanno coinvolto il territorio nazionale nell’ultimo decennio, hanno posto le basi per una rinnovata sensibilità verso il costruito minore, la cui conservazione e valorizzazione assume oggi una molteplice valenza. Da alcuni anni, la comunità scientifica si interroga su come preservare non solo la sicurezza della società che vi risiede, ma anche le funzioni amministrative e sociali che in essi vengono espletate. In questa ottica, il presente contributo intende mostrare come l’adeguata conoscenza delle tecniche realizzative e delle trasformazioni subite dal tessuto possa costituire il punto di avvio di un processo teso alla messa a punto di indirizzi di pianificazione per la salvaguardia dal rischio sismico di interi abitati.

Abstract: The propagation of a Bessel beam (or Bessel-X wave) is analyzed on the basis of a vectorial treatment. The electric and magnetic fields are obtained by considering a realistic situation able to generate that kind of scalar field. Specifically, we analyze the field due to a ring-shaped aperture over a metallic screen on which a linearly polarized plane wave impinges. On this basis, and in the far field approximation, we can obtain information about the propagation of energy flux and the velocity of the energy.

Abstract:
Introduction: According to the records of the Hong Kong Athletic Gala for the Elderly, some sports events have been won by the same group of elderly participants for several consecutive years. What made these elderly athletes different from others? Method: This was a retrospective quantitative study. The health profile data on a total of 125 elderly participants were collected. 36 and 29 were the winners and losers of the Hong Kong Athletic Gala for the Elderly between 2008 and 2010, respectively. The remaining 60 were non-participants. The non-participants came from six elderly centers in different districts in Hong Kong. Health profile parameters were measured using the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II, which is used to measure healthy behaviors such as physical activity level, nutrition, stress management, health responsibility, interpersonal relations and spiritual growth. Results: About 41.7% (n = 15) and 80.0% (n = 48) of the elderly (mean age = 74 ± 9.0) in the winner and non-participant groups with chronic diseases. There were significant (p < 0.05) differences in fat percentage, mobility, and body mass index among the three groups of elderly. Five out of six domains in the HPLP-II: physical activity, nutrition, interpersonal relations, spiritual growth and health responsibility, were siginificantly different among two groups. Conclusion: It could be concluded that elderly people who had better health status and lifestyle, and who undertook regular exercise, fared better than others in sports events.

Para ello se analizan algunas características importantes que dan cuenta del origen y desarrollo del mismo, así como de sus momentos más críticos y sus tensiones, sus desafíos y sus retos. Otra de las grandes inquietudes de este trabajo, es intentar descifrar cómo el movimiento del software libre y Linux, en su versión más conocida, sobrevivieron y se afirmaron hasta llegar a constituir una verdadera alternativa frente a las grandes empresas de la alta tecnología.

PTHrP Overexpression Increases Sensitivity of Breast Cancer Cells to Apo2L/TRAIL

Abstract: Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) is a key component in breast development and breast tumour biology. PTHrP has been discovered as a causative agent of hypercalcaemia of malignancy and is also one of the main factors implicated in breast cancer mediated osteolysis. Clinical studies have determined that PTHrP expression by primary breast cancers was an independent predictor of improved prognosis. Furthermore, PTHrP has been demonstrated to cause tumour cell death both in vitro and in vivo. Apo2L/TRAIL is a promising new anti-cancer agent, due to its ability to selectively induce apoptosis in cancer cells whilst sparing most normal cells. However, some cancer cells are resistant to Apo2L/TRAIL-induced apoptosis thus limiting its therapeutic efficacy. The effects of PTHrP on cell death signalling pathways initiated by Apo2L/TRAIL were investigated in breast cancer cells. Expression of PTHrP in Apo2L/TRAIL resistant cell line MCF-7 sensitised these cells to Apo2L/TRAIL-induced apoptosis. The actions of PTHrP resulted from intracellular effects, since exogenous treatment of PTHrP had no effect on Apo2L/TRAIL-induced apoptosis. Apo2L/TRAIL-induced apoptosis in PTHrP expressing cells occurred through the activation of caspase-10 resulting in caspase-9 activation and induction of apoptosis through the effector caspases, caspase-6 and -7. PTHrP increased cell surface expression of Apo2L/TRAIL death receptors, TRAIL-R1 and TRAIL-R2. Antagonistic antibodies against the death receptors demonstrated that Apo2L/TRAIL mediated its apoptotic signals through activation of the TRAIL-R2 in PTHrP expressing breast cancer cells. These studies reveal a novel role for PTHrP with Apo2L/TRAIL that maybe important for future diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
