Advances in Microbiology (AiM) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/aim.2016.68055
Abstract: Escherichia coli and other Proteobacteria are augmented and several other bacteria are diminished in Crohn’s (CD) disease patients’ intestine. This imbalance in bacterial species composition—termed dysbiosis—seems to be determinant of CD manifestation. Since a great part of intestinal bacteria are not cultivable, detection of CD dysbiosis is accomplished by molecular tools, involving sequences analysis of the 16SrRNA gene (16SrDNA) present in the patient’s clinical samples, which can be done by sequencing or electrophoresis in denaturing gels of 16SrDNA amplicons. By analyzing, by temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) and next generation sequencing of 16SV6-V8rDNA amplicons present in gram negative cultures from four distinct clinical samples of a control subject and a CD patient, this study demonstrates that both techniques were able to detect E. coli overgrowth and reduction in species richness in CD and that TGGE can discriminate sequences collectively labeled as “unclassified” in 16SrDNA databases. Although TGGE per se does not identify the sequences, the discriminatory power that it confers represents valuable accessory information to next generation DNA sequencing (NGS), and as such must be used as a NGS complementary tool.

Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/as.2015.63037
Abstract: Ornamental plants are distinguished by the shape and color of their leaves/flowers and their use in landscaping and gardening. In urban areas, their presence is relevant for the maintenance of bees. Aiming to list the ornamental bee plants species occurring in Santa Catarina State (SC), southern Brazil, a survey of forage resources for bees, recorded in the State, was performed. We refer all published works developed in SC (resulting in the period 1983-2014) which include data from reports of scientific research, monographs, dissertations, Masters Dissertations, Doctoral Thesis, annals of scientific events, scientific articles and books. From the 28 ensuant works, we listed, as ornamental bee plants occurring in SC, 201 species, of 156 genera and 66 botanical families. Of these species, 92 are native (N), 26 endemic to Brazil and 109 exotic (E). Families with more ornamental bee species are: Fabaceae (22 species), Asteraceae (20), Solanaceae (11), Rosaceae (10) and Lamiaceae (8). The most cited species are: Lantana camara L. (N) (Verbenaceae) (9 quotes), Aloysia virgata (N) (Ruiz & Pav.) Juss. (Verbenaceae) (8), Hedychium coronarium J. Koenig (naturalized) (Zingiberaceae) (6) and Brachyscome multifida (E) (Asteraceae) (5), regarding habitus, herbs (48.5%) predominate, followed by bushes (21.5%), trees (16.5%) and vines (10.5%). Preferred colours of flowers by bees are, in decreasing order: white, yellow, red/pink, and others. The genus Ipomoea, Calliandra, Passiflora, Prunus and Senecio have more ornamental bee plant species. A large botanical diversity arises, demonstrating the possibilities for urban bee foraging and ornamental featuring, in a perspective of sustainability.

Journal of Neuroinflammation , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1742-2094-9-103
Abstract: We used the N9 microglial cell line, and cell death and proliferation were evaluated by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay and incorporation of bromodeoxyuridine, respectively. The TNF-α and IL-6 content was quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and changes in TNF receptor 1, IL-6 receptor-alpha, Bax and Bcl-2 protein levels by western blotting. Immunocytochemistry analysis was also performed to evaluate alterations in microglial morphology and in the protein expression of phospho-signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (pSTAT3).METH induced microglial cell death in a concentration-dependent manner (EC50?=?1?mM), and also led to significant morphological changes and decreased cell proliferation. Additionally, this drug increased TNF-α extracellular and intracellular levels, as well as its receptor protein levels at 1?h, whereas IL-6 and its receptor levels were increased at 24?h post-exposure. However, the endogenous proinflammatory cytokines did not contribute to METH-induced microglial cell death. On the other hand, exogenous low concentrations of TNF-α or IL-6 had a protective effect. Interestingly, we also verified that the anti-apoptotic role of TNF-α was mediated by activation of IL-6 signaling, specifically the janus kinase (JAK)-STAT3 pathway, which in turn induced down-regulation of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. These findings show that TNF-α and IL-6 have a protective role against METH-induced microglial cell death via the IL-6 receptor, specifically through activation of the JAK-STAT3 pathway, with consequent changes in pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins.Methamphetamine (METH) is a potent addictive psychostimulant drug that easily crosses the blood–brain barrier and induces severe brain damage, leading to neurological abnormalities and eventually to psychiatric disorders. Several studies have demonstrated that people who misuse METH reveal deficits in the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems, hippocampal volume r

Abstract: paragangliomas is a pheochromocytoma of extra adrenal localization. the case report is a male, 55 years old who presented symptoms of adrenergic hyperstimulation associated to an abdominal mass diagnosed as paraganglioma by a biopsy. because of its size, localization and vascularization, an aortography with embolization of the nutrient branches of the tumor was done pre-operatively. four days later, a surgical ressection was performed, and the tumor was adhered to the duodenum, infra-renal aorta and inferior vena cava. we believe that an angiographic study pre-operatively with embolization makes possible an analysis of the anastomosis and arterial supplement, making the ressecability of the tumor safer, although it seems the surgical intervention should have been done earlier.

Revista de Enfermagem UFPE On Line , 2010,
Abstract: Objective: to describe the most evident factors those are transforming car accidents into a social pathology. Methodology: literature review study and gathering of data through WEB of National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and from the website Virtual Library in Health (Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde — BVS), using the following describers: accident prevention, public health, external causes, risk-taking, damage liability, continuing education and public awareness. Results: the traffic accidents are considered as a public social problem, so, it is necessary to treat them as a pathological picture in which the used drug should be prophylaxis, because the high rate of accident victims in this so-called transit system has become a pandemic. Conclusion: despite high rates of morbidity and mortality caused by this social pathology, it is possible to circumvent the situation through educational strategies and actions that work simultaneously with the awareness and consciousness of each individual who forms the society. It is possible to reduce the triggers of this violence that occurs in the traffic, and even without a comprehensive manner to avoid the facts, the best behavior is the prevention.

Movimento , 2011,

Abstract: Older adults present changes in energy metabolism that result in an increase of bodyfat and a decrease of muscle mass and height, leading to alterations in the position of the centerof gravity (CG) and consequent falls. The objective of the present study was to compare thepercent CG height and the number of falls (NF) over the last 12 months between active andsedentary older adults and to correlate them with anthropometric variables (body weight, heightand BMI). The sample consisted of 102 men and women ranging in age from 60 to 84 years, including 64 active and 38 sedentary subjects. Anthropometric variables, NF, level of physicalactivity of sedentary subjects, and percent CG height were evaluated and the mean and standarddeviation were calculated. Correlations between variables were estimated using Pearson’scorrelation coefficient. The percent CG height was 57.54 ± 2.57% in active subjects and 57.47± 1.94% in sedentary subjects. No significant correlations were observed between percent CGheight and anthropometric variables or NF in either group. In conclusion, older adults presenta CG above the physiological value (55%). No significant association was observed betweenpercent CG height, anthropometric variables and NF.

Revista Saúde.Com , 2012,
Abstract: Alcohol, psychoactive substance, harmful to health, has been widely accepted and consumed by society in a premature manner. The Brazilian contemporaneous reality has demonstrated a high number of adolescents who consume alcohol on regularly basis, and nowadays, its damages start to be evident, hence the importance of contextualizing this issue in relation to adolescents. This study aims to determine the profile of alcohol consumption in adolescent students of a public high school in a city of the inland of Bahia, Brazil. It is a descriptive study with quantitative approach, conducted with 98 male and female students, and a structured questionnaire used to collect data, which was analyzed with aid of descriptive statistics. The survey was approved by the Ethics inResearch Committee Involving Human Beings, of the State University of Southwest Bahia –campus of Jequié-Bahia, Brazil under Protocol 179/2009. It was perceived that most of the teenagers had already consumed alcohol prematurely, with minimal difference between male and female gender. Several of these adolescents continue consuming too much and too often, influenced by friends, family and media. It can be concluded that it is imperative to insert educational methodological proposals at schools which shouldinstruct about premature and indiscriminate alcohol consumption, addressing principally risk factors and possible biopsychosocial complications.
