Tagungsessay: ffentliche und private Erz hlungen Conference Essay: Public and Private Narratives Ensayo: Narrativas públicas y privadas
Vanessa May
Forum : Qualitative Social Research , 2004,
URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0401192 This essay examines a conference on narrative. The field of narrative studies is by nature interdisciplinary, which leads to certain strengths and weaknesses, both of which were evident during the conference. On the one hand, as a result of the myriad approaches to and definitions of narrative and narrative analysis, the conference perhaps lacked a sense of coherence. However, the conference showed that overriding this weak-ness in narrative studies is the fruitful cross-fertilization that can occur when a field is truly interdisciplinary. Thus, concepts and theories can and do travel from one discipline to another, gaining new meaning and providing new insight on the way.

[English] It presents the results of a user’s study carried out at Funda o Maurício Sirotsky Sobrinho (FMSS), which aimed to identify the information necessities of the FMSS’s staff, based on information management and knowledge management. It’s an applied, descriptive type of quanti-qualitative matrix research, using the study case. Based on the information necessities, an implementation of groupware software, which favors the creation of an environment for exchange of information, is suggested, as well as the creation of a corporative portal which aggregates information available on the Internet, as part of the information management and the knowledge management at FMSS.
A starting point of learning to teach science topics at the primary level - The Teacher Education Programme
CHENG May Hung, May
Asia-Pacific Forum on Science Learning and Teaching , 2001,
Abstract: This paper describes the experience of a group of student-teachers in an initial teacher education programme at the Hong Kong Institute of Education. In preparing the student-teachers to teach science, the programme introduced a module on science teaching that included a discussion of the various approaches to teach science and in particular, teaching science with a constructivist view of learning was discussed. The focus of the study is to look at the development of the student-teachers at three phases: before they took the module on science teaching; after they took the module and after their teaching practice period. The student-teachers were interviewed at the three phases and their views on science teaching; feelings about being a science teacher in school and their own experiences in learning to teach were collected and analysed. Drawing on the findings, the paper concludes with the possible factors that influence the development of the student-teachers as they learn to teach.

Abstract: A strong grasp in mathematics is a key factor in ensuring success in mathematics education. This study tried to identify the difficulties in College Algebra of freshmen students in the University of Eastern Philippines during the school year 2013-2014 as basis for modular construction. The performance level was determined by giving a teacher made test to find out the skill areas students were deficient. The causes of their deficiencies were traced as basis for constructing modules. In this study, the descriptive normative method of research was used where the College of Science freshmen students were the respondents. The performance level of the students in College Algebra based on teacher made test given by the researchers was very low, the overall total score of total score of the given items answered correctly by the students was 324, the average was 77.16 and the mean performance was 26.34. The result showed that the mean performance was 26.34. The result showed that the mean performance was very low without mastery. The students had almost no background on the seven areas which resulted to their very low performance. They lacked knowledge, competency and skills in answering questions especially in solving the application of word problems which obtained a mean score of 2.99, followed by special product and factoring, equations and radicals. The result of the study showed that the students were deficient in the application of word problems, special product and factoring, equations and radicals.
Teachers’ and School Leaders’ Perceptions of Further Education and Learning in School  [PDF]
May Britt Postholm, Klara Rokkones
Creative Education (CE) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2015.623252
Abstract: This article focuses on further education of teachers and the importance of the relationship between further education and the visions and development strategies of schools. The study shows that if further education is to contribute to change and development in schools beyond what individual teachers learn, the school has to be organized as a learning community. This means that the school must have a vision. This in turn demands that schools are led in a manner that allocates arenas and room for communication where visions and targets can be formulated and understood through common dialogue.

A rational model for assessing and evaluating complex interventions in health care
Carl May
BMC Health Services Research , 2006, DOI: 10.1186/1472-6963-6-86
Abstract: Between 1995 and 2005 multiple qualitative studies were undertaken. These examined: professional-patient relationships; changing patterns of care; the development, evaluation and implementation of telemedicine and related informatics systems; and the production and utilization of evidence for practice. Data from these studies were subjected to (i) formative re-analysis, leading to sets of analytic propositions; and to (ii) a summative analysis that aimed to build a robust conceptual model of the normalization of complex interventions in health care.A normalization process model that enables analysis of the conditions necessary to support the introduction of complex interventions is presented. The model is defined by four constructs: interactional workability; relational integration; skill set workability and contextual integration. This model can be used to understand the normalization potential of new techniques and technologies in healthcare settingsThe normalization process model has face validity in (i) assessing the potential for complex interventions to become routinely embedded in everyday clinical work, and (ii) evaluating the factors that promote or inhibit their success and failure in practice.Health care providers increasingly seek new technological and organizational means of improving the efficiency and clinical and cost effectiveness of clinical care and health service delivery [1]. The assessment and evaluation of these solutions has become a major focus of investigation in health services research and health technology assessment. For both decision-makers and evaluation researchers, conceptualizing the practical workability of new treatment modalities or information systems, and assessing their potential for integration in healthcare settings, are key problems. The purpose of this article is therefore to present a rational conceptual model – the normalization process model – that can assist both service provider and research constituencies in underst
A proper subclass of Maclane's class ° ’

International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences , 1999, DOI: 10.1155/s0161171299224635
Abstract: The MacLane's class ° ’ of analytic functions is the class of nonconstant analytic functions in the unit disk that have asymptotic values at a dense subset of the unit circle. In this paper, we define a subclass ¢ of ° ’ consisting of those functions that have asymptotic values at a dense subset of the unit circle reached along rectifiable asymptotic paths. We also show that the class ¢ is a proper subclass of ° ’ by constructing a function f ¢ ° ’ that admits no asymptotic paths of finite length.
Human settlement and land use at Trévelez (Sierra Nevada). A historical-geographical approach
May, T.
Pirineos : Revista de Ecología de Monta?a , 1991,
Abstract: Based on written documents of the 16th, 18th and 19th century and on information from a publication of the early 19 70s, as well as on our own field observations, we attempt to describe the evolution of settlement and land use in the territory of Trévelez (Sierra Nevada, Provincia de Granada, Spain), from the end of the morisco period until the present. After the Christian colonization in 1572, a process of extensification took place, which resulted in a type of land use which gave great importance to rainfed cereal agriculture and husbandry of small ungulates. From the end of the 18th century/beginning of the 19th century onward, there are indications of another process of agricultural intensification and diversification, with great importance given to irrigated cultivation. During the past two decades, an abandonment of agricultural areas can be observed, as well as an increase in activities linked to tourism and a certain recuperation of sheep and goat husbandry. It must be pointed out that land use has been submitted to important changes during the past, and that the "traditional" agricultural landscape is of relatively recent origin.
