Valverde,Alejandra;
Antipoda. Revista de Antropología y Arqueología , 2007,
Abstract: this article is about of archaeological theory around funerary practices. this is not only an exclusive debate about theory; but also the article shows the interpretations about funerary practices and, then, applies these theories to understand the lache mummies found in la sierra nevada del cocuy, colombia.
Displayed Dexterity and Distorted Knowledge: Amateurism and Precision in late 18th century Spain
Valverde, Nuria
Abstract: This paper explores the links between scientific practice and precision both in expert networks and popular literature in the second half 18th century Spain. It will be argued that scientific instruments were used and understood in different ways in these two networks, which required opposing strategies for visualizing the degree and goodness of users’ dexterities, thereby fostering the emergence of different collective and individual (epistemic) subjects. I will also argue that these subjects’ differences and affinities were constructed around three themes: firstly, the degree of precision needed to establish a correlation between data and the world, or, in other words, the degree of fluidity admitted in connecting material and cultural worlds; secondly, the relevance attributed to body and bod(il)y knowledge in producing reliable data and stabilizing expertise; and thirdly, the weight attributed to opinion in leaning towards ephemeral or lasting data. The first part of the paper looks at the epistemological and political confluences which in late 18th century Spain nurtured the emergence of both a culture of precision and a sphere of public opinion, and to the strained relationship that existed between them. The other three sections explore how Spanish people used different sets of practices to construct different images of themselves as supporters of a moral of precision.
Analyzing the governance of security: Jurisdiction and scale
Mariana Valverde
Behemoth : a Journal on Civilisation , 2008,
Abstract: Two related arguments are developed in this paper. First of all, it is shown that theoretical work on the governance of security could benefit a great deal from the current literature on law and geography and law and space. Secondly, this article also argues that the analytical resources of ‘scale’ should be supplemented by insights derived from analyzing the workings of jurisdiction. Jurisdiction does not merely distinguish who governs: it also distributes governance in terms of governing capacities, objects of governance, and modes of governance. Using the ‘police power of the state’, with its typically urban scale, as the main example, the article shows that unpacking ‘jurisdiction’ can enrich the legal geographers’existing critiques of scale.
Experience and Truthtelling
Mariana Valverde
Outlines : Critical Practice Studies , 2002,
Abstract: This is a Foucault-inspired, postmodern study of ethical subjectivity. Technologies of life, personal truths and relations between truth telling and intoxication are highlighted in drug autobiographies and in materials from a study of Alcoholics Anonymous. Here other notions of the self are at play than the concept of the unified, autonomous, authentic self. These materials also offer an understanding of addiction as a dysfunction or disorganisation of temporality in everyday life.
Camilo Valverde
Laboreal , 2007,
Abstract: We present the conceptual and methodological approach proposed by Véronique De Keyser to managing prevention and analysing professional risks. In this perspective conceptions and practices of prevention should always emerge and be structured by the risk analysis accomplished in context and with the participation of the concerned actors. We have structured the presentation of this approach in three parts. We begin by analysing the evolution of paradigms that support the understanding of risk evaluation and prevention management. Next we operationalise the concepts and the theories that characterise the contextual approach envisaged by the author to research/intervention in this domain. We conclude with the exposition of the most widespread methods in risk evaluation study, emphasising their use as instruments in order to promote transformations in views on conceptions and practices of prevention.
A Risk Management Decision Support System for the Real Estate Industry
Raul Valverde
International Journal of Information and Communication Technology Research , 2011,
Abstract: The purpose of this work is to build a risk management decision support system for the real estate industry. The decision support system would be useful for risk managers interested in real estate investment. The paper identifies the main risk management related decisions that real estate professionals made on a daily basis. Risk management decision models are selected from an extensive literature review. These models are incorporated into a decision support system. A set of reports that will support risk management real estate decisions are designed and implemented in a prototype built to demonstrate the potential of this technology in the real estate industry. The database of the decision support is populated with a sample of data collected from the real estate market of the state of California USA and results were generated to illustrate how reports can be used to support real estate risk management decisions.
Constructing victimhood in post-Franco‘s Spain: The recovery of memory by the grandchildren of victims of the civil war and dictatorship
Valverde Estela
Temida , 2012, DOI: 10.2298/tem1201077v
Abstract: Since the end of the Spanish Civil War their victims have lived in a state of repression and terror that did not allow them to claim victimhood or any restitution to the State. Furthermore, the post-Franco Amnesty Law in 1977 made a blanket statement about the issue: there were no winners or losers, no victims or perpetrators. Everything had to be forgiven and forgotten. This paper will analyze the new Spanish movement for exhumation focused on the disappeared during the Civil War and the dictatorship of Franco. The analysis will look into the judicialisation of politics; the reasons why the 2007 Law of Historical Memory that attempted to challenge amnesty has been resisted and whether this law will heal the body of Spanish society and promote social reconstruction. What could be the ultimate danger of contesting collective memory 40 years after Franco’s death in this highly stratified society?
Engenharia de estados quanticos: gerando estados superpostos em modos viajantes = Quantum state engineering: generating superposition states in traveling waves
Clodoaldo Valverde
Acta Scientiarum : Technology , 2010,
A proposal was presented to measure the phase distribution P( ) ofcertain family of states, which requires a previous superposition of number and phase states, whose generation is presented in this work for the mentioned proposal.
