Abstract: largo do jurumbeval, in the city of campinas, was considered unhealthy and even dangerous place during the second half of the 19th century, although many lower class individuals either lived or worked there. the uncontrolled conglomeration of such "undesirable" people (blacks, both free and slave, immigrants and other poor brazilians) was seen as a threat by the authorities, and attempts were made to control these immoral and scandalous individuals by limiting their contact with each other and their access to the area. one of the solutions proposed by county officials involved the moral education of these individuals, to be provided by the police. in these attempts at moral education, however, the police played a rather ambiguous role, as they often practiced those acts which they were supposed to curtail. the present paper was designed to recuperate some of these "police teachings" and their effect on the lives of the people involved.

Abstract: O insalubre Largo do Jurumbeval, em Campinas, constituiu durante a segunda metade do século XIX importante espa o de trabalho, divers o e moradia popular.

Abstract: cerebral edema secondary to ischemia can threaten life, mainly due to frequent failure of medical management. imminent herniation of the temporal lobe can be timely detected by clinical signs and ct-scan. eight patients (4m, 4f; 48-74 years, mean 62) with ischemic stroke and imminent herniation, were surgically decompressed by a standard temporal lobectomy as described by olivier for temporal lobe epilepsy. six patients survived, two died and were considered failure of the procedure, probably due to late surgical indication. in conclusion, temporal lobectomy is life-saving for patients with large ischemic cerebral infarction with mass effect land deteriorating signs of brain stem compression.

Abstract: the vibration of the vocal fold lamina propria is an important factor involved in vocal production and aging may change the amount of hyaluronic acid in the vocal fold leading to dysphonia. aims: this study compares the concentration of hyaluronic acid in vocal folds of aged and young female rats. study design: experimental. materials and methods: we used the vocal cords of 13 female rats divided into two groups: five aged rats and eight young ones. the tissue concentration of hyaluronic acid was determined using the fluorimetric method with the hyaluronic acid binding-protein coated on plates of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (elisa), conjugated with biotin. europium-labeled streptavidin was added and, after europium release with the use of enhancement solution, the final fluorescence was measured in a fluorometer. results: we found the following concentrations of hyaluronic acid in vocal fold according to the group: 581.7 ng/mg in old female rats and 1275.6 ng/mg in young female rats. statistical analysis showed differences between groups. conclusions: the vocal folds of old female rats have a lower concentration of hyaluronic acid when compared to such concentration on the vocal folds of young female rats.
