Abstract: Recently we have shown the presence of catalytically active IgGs, capable to cleave histone H1 and bovine myelin basic protein (MBP), in blood serum of SLE patients. Here we present data that demonstrate the correlation between a) proteolytic activity towards histone H1 and MBP of IgG-antibodies from blood serum of SLE patients and b) disease severity level in these patients. IgGs were isolated from blood serum by chromatography on protein G-sepharose. Commercial preparations of bovine myelin basic proteins (MBP) and calf thymus histone H1 were used as substrates. Analysis of the proteolytic activity showed that 16 of 38 lgG-preparations (42,1%) obtained from blood serum of SLE patients were capable of cleaving both histone H1 and MBP with different efficiency. It was revealed that the presence in blood serum of lgGs possessing proteolytic activity towards both histone H1 and bMBP closely correlates with manifestation of the disease severity in SLE patients.
Weak association of anti-sperm antibodies and strong association of familial cryptorchidism/infertility with HLA-DRB1polymorphisms in prepubertal Ukrainian boys

Abstract: Sixty prepubertal boys with cryptorchidism and sixty healthy boys were examined for anti-sperm antibodies by indirect immunobead test as well as for their HLA-DRB1 and -DQB1 alleles using DNA obtained from peripheral blood leukocytes. The typing of HLA-DRB1 and -DQB1 was performed by using PCR-SSP low resolution method.Allele frequencies of HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DQB1 did not differ between boys with cryptorchidism and control boys. However, weakly significant differences in DRB1*04 (p corrected = 0.0475) and DQB1*06 (p corrected = 0.0385) were seen between cryptorchid patients with and without AsA, but none of these two patient groups differed significantly in HLA class II frequencies from controls except for AsA-negatives and HLA-DQB1*06 (p corrected = 0.0247). On the other hand, comparison of cryptorchid boys with familial cryptorchidism and/or infertility to control boys revealed highly significant (p corrected = 0.0006) difference in HLA-DRB*11 frequency, whereas boys with sporadic cryptorchidism did not differ from control. A much weaker, but still significant difference in DRB*11 frequency was also observed between boys with bilateral cryptorchidism and controls (p corrected = 0.037), whereas patients with unilateral cryptorchidism were not different from control in frequency of any HLA-DRB1 or -DQB1 allele tested.Predisposition to produce anti-sperm antibodies seems to be only weakly associated with HLA class II genes, although this question requires further study on much larger population sample. It is plausible that familial and sporadic cryptorchidism may present distinct genetic background. The same may, to lower extent, apply to bilateral and unilateral cryptorchidism.Cryptorchidism is one of the most frequent pathologies in early childhood (1.4-8.4% in Caucasian term male births) in which one (unilateral) or both (bilateral) testes fail to descend into the ideal scrotal position. It is also a major risk for male infertility and for testicular malignancy in a
Representations of the Quantum Algebra su_q(1,1) and Discrete q-Ultraspherical Polynomials

Symmetry, Integrability and Geometry : Methods and Applications , 2005,
Abstract: We derive orthogonality relations for discrete q-ultraspherical polynomials and their duals by means of operators of representations of the quantum algebra su_q(1,1). Spectra and eigenfunctions of these operators are found explicitly. These eigenfunctions, when normalized, form an orthonormal basis in the representation space.
Was HIV knowledge associated with condom use at first sex among Ukrainian teenagers in 2007?

Abstract: BACKGROUND. Condoms offer the best protection against sexually transmitted infections including HIV. In Ukraine, little research has been conducted to explore possible predictors of condom use at sexual debut. It was hypothesized that the more youth know about possible ways of HIV transmission, the more they are likely to use condoms during the first sexual intercourse.METHODS: Data analyzed in this paper comes from a cross-sectional European School Survey Project on Alcohol and other Drugs conducted among Ukrainian school youth in 2007. The survey involved a total of 5122 students (15–17 year old) from all types of secondary schools in 24 oblasts and AR Crimea. Analysis was confined to 1077 students (715 males and 362 females) who reported that they have ever had sexual intercourse. Associations were assessed in bivariate analysis using Chi-square test and later using binary logistic regression analysis in order to identify the significant predictors after controlling for other variables.RESULTS: Among the sexually experienced students, more than 70% had used condoms during first sexual intercourse. The results from the logistic regression analysis revealed that the age at first sexual intercourse, HIV awareness, alcohol consumption and family characteristics were significant predictors of condom use at first sexual intercourse among the Ukrainian schoolchildren. Students who had first sex at the age from 14 to 16 years were more likely to use condom at their first sexual intercourse than those with sexual debut before 14 years old (odds ratios 2,4; 2,1; and 3,3, respectively). Moreover, those students who were aware that using condom may protect against getting HIV were more likely (OR 2,1) to use condom at first sex.CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate the necessity of providing educational programs which aim to raise the level of awareness about HIV among Ukrainian youth.
English across cultures: adapting to new realities English across cultures: adapting to new realities

Abstract: As a complex adaptive system language coevolves with its environment changing to maintain language/environment equilibrium is indispensable for its effective functioning. Fundamental environmental changes trigger the equilibrium punctuation (Dixon, 1997) which is exhibited in language functional deficiency. To re-establish the equilibrium and to cover the communicative deficit the dynamics of natural adaptation is enhanced. In this paper mechanisms of the English language adaptation to the new realities it encountered beyond the initial territory were studied. Adaptation process consisting in the transmutation of the products of the speech community perception of the altered environment into cognitive and linguistic structures was modeled. The results suggest that the incorporation of these structures into the extant conceptual and lingual systems manifests the equilibrium recovering. Regionalist Origins of Centralisation in Ukraine
Valentyna Romanova
Sfera Politicii , 2012,
Abstract: Regionalism in Ukraine is often perceived as a threat for territorial integrity and democratisation. However, Ukrainian regionalist parties, that call for severe decentralisation during electoral campaigns, tend to promote centralisation when in national office. Indeed, their pre-electoral and post-electoral positions on the centre-periphery relations significantly differ. Strong regionalist parties follow their pre-electoral agendas mainly for effective bargaining with strong centralist parties. When in national office, they promote centralisation, which is beneficial for territorial interest groups they represent – territorially bounded heavy industries that require central investment.

EUROREGIONS IN UKRAINE – ROMANIA - REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA AREA: EXPECTATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND PROSPECTS
Valentyna Vasylova
CES Working Papers , 2012,
Abstract: The article analyses the phenomenon of Euroregions and cross-border co-operation in Ukraine, Republic of Moldova and Romania area in a comparative perspective with the Western European practice. It outlines the expected mission of the “Lower Danube” and “Upper Prut” Euroregions, their general features and particularities, achievements and shortcoming, experience and prospects. The study shows that although the “Lower Danube” and “Upper Prut” Euroregions did not prove to become self-sustainable structures and after 15 years of their existence reduced their activity, they should be given credit for the positive role in the revitalization of cross-border co-operation between the three neighboring states on the EU Eastern frontier.
