A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel group phase III clinical trial was conducted with the purpose of evaluating the effectiveness and safety of Renalof to remove and/or reduce calcium lithiasis in patients with calcium urolithiasis. The patients chosen were aged 18-65 and had stones smaller than 10 mm. These patients were treated with a natural product manufactured by the Spanish laboratory Catálisis SA, in a dosage of 1 capsule 3 times a day during 3 months, and monthly clinical, radiological, tomographic and echographic follow-up to record adverse effects. The main evaluation criterion was the size and number of the calculi, with favorable response when they either disappeared or their size was reduced. 110 patients were randomized to Renalof (n=52) and placebo (n=58). Stone size reduction was 7.7 % for the Renalof group and 0 % for the placebo group by the third month, whereas the stone disappearance response was 86.5 % by the third month for the Renalof group. The mean number of colics decreased by the third month, with only 0.4 ± 1.3 for the Renalof group. It was concluded that Renalof is an efficient product for the destruction or reduction of calcium renoureteral calculi, with no

The dialysis therapy patients have high rates of atherosclerotic events and of cardiovascular mortality; the cardiovascular risk factors accounted for the high incidence of atherosclerosis complications in that population. Abstract: The derivations of climate change on cities and their activities depend on their capacity for adaptation and mitigation. In this sense, it has long recognized the influence of cities on their own climate, which is typically warmer than the surrounding. This phenomenon called urban heat island (UHI) has a number of impacts on air quality, water demand and energy. Since the fourth IPCC assessment report indicates the need for urban centers devoting efforts to adaptation to reduce the risks of direct and indirect impacts of climate change. The same organization recognizes the urban planning as a tool to seek such order. However, it also recognizes that the current scale of climate models cannot provide a representation of urban areas. This paper explores the intensification of the UHI, its relationship with urban expansion and its impact on housing in the city of Mexicali, B.C. Its aim is to determine its impact and mitigation potential through analysis and modeling of urban structure, expressed in use and land cover, as well as the implementation of mitigation strategies. The results show on the one hand, the convenience of using dynamic modeling as a tool applied to urban planning with a focus on mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Furthermore, regarding the implementation of strategies, the results show that most efficiency is obtained when applied generally, this is, considering green and cool roofs, cool pavements and afforestation as part of urbanization process, otherwise, only partial results are achieved. Overall, housing land use has significant potential to mitigate the UHI in the city.

Abstract: Populations of species occupying large geographic ranges are often phenotypically diverse as a consequence of variation in selective pressures and drift. This applies to attributes involved in mate choice, particularly when both geographic range and breeding biology overlap between related species. This condition may lead to interference of mating signals, which would in turn promote reproductive character displacement (RCD). We investigated whether variation in the advertisement call of the mountain treefrog (Hyla eximia) is linked to geographic distribution with respect to major Mexican river basins (Panuco, Lerma, Balsas and Magdalena), or to coexistence with its sister (the canyon treefrog, Hyla arenicolor) or another related species (the dwarf treefrog, Tlalocohyla smithii). We also evaluated whether call divergence across the main river basins could be linked to genetic structure. We found that the multidimensional acoustic space of calls from two basins where H. eximia currently interacts with T. smithii, was different from the acoustic space of calls from H. eximia elsewhere. Individuals from these two basins were also distinguishable from the rest by both the phylogeny inferred from mitochondrial sequences, and the genetic structure inferred from nuclear markers. The discordant divergence of H. eximia advertisement calls in the two separate basins where its geographic range overlaps that of T. smithii can be interpreted as the result of two independent events of RCD, presumably as a consequence of acoustic interference in the breeding choruses, although more data are required to evaluate this possibility.
A 29-year-old pregnant woman with a history of anthracycline-induced clinical heart failure  [PDF]

Health (Health) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/health.2011.31007
Abstract: The number of women with heart disease who reach childbearing age in a good functional state increases continuously as advances in diagnosis and treatment improve overall health and prognosis. The cardiologist’s role is to give the woman an estimate of both maternal and fetal risk to allow her to make an informed decision about embarking on a pregnancy, and to provide appropriate antenatal care. There are only a few data about the natural history of anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy during preg- nancy; we report our experience of a 29-year- old pregnant woman with a history of anthracycline-induced clinical heart failure.

Abstract:

The following research describes an attempt to combine ICT and Special Education through an inclusive pedagogical perspective. It examines how an innovative use of Information and Communication Technology can help create inclusive environments on the web. Specifically, the study focuses on the way the University responds to diversity and to e-inclusion through some development phases of an experimental research project, which is most far-reaching called “Network@ccessible: teaching/learning together and for everyone in a life project” carried out by six Italian universities and research institutions, from 2009 to 2014, and involved 1174 students (1.6% disabled students). This study is split into two main parts: 1) description and analysis of the data collected following the administration of an inquiry tool, developed to detect the climate experienced by the students involved in the online working groups; 2) investigation and detection of the elements of change that can encourage the process of inclusion in online learning environments to acquire credits allocated to the university courses. This study proposes further research to take place in the area of inclusive online university courses.

Recent Trends in Occupational Injuries and Diseases in Argentina: A Panel Data Approach  [PDF]

Abstract: Occupational injuries pose major public health and development related problems. However, efforts towards identification of determinants of labor incidents among salaried workers are still scarce in developing countries. This study aimed to identify sector and time effects on occupational accidents and diseases among Argentinean workers during 2004-2013. A negative binomial panel data model is estimated based on official data on injuries and fatalities in workplaces collected by the Board of Occupational Risks. Business cycle and profitability indicators are used as explanatory variables. Estimations also are adjusted by sector and time effects. Argentina business cycle tends to be negatively related with occupational injuries rates. In contrast, accidents at work reported tend to exhibit longer losses in working days. We also find a positive relationship between profitability and fatal injuries. These results may suggest incentives for under reporting and lower investments in safety by more profitable activities, which can imply some level of endogeneity between profit rate and occupational injuries.
