DETECCIóN DEL VIRUS DEL PAPILOMA HUMANO MEDIANTE CITOLOGíA URETRAL EN PACIENTES MASCULINOS DEL ESTADO LARA

Abstract: In order to determine urethral cytology findings of HPV in male patients of program Sexually Transmitted Infections of Lara state and identify the exposure to risk factors for transmission of this virus. We performed a descriptive sectional study, no probabilistic sample accidental of 94 individuals over 20 years of age during the period September-November 2009, also applied a structured questionnaire with closed questions, the data were processed using SPSS 11.5 for Windows, represented in absolute values and percentages. The frequency of positive findings consistent with HPV in urethral cytology was 14.89%. Among the risk factors studied with findings consistent with HPV urethral cytology found, history of sex with partner carriers of warts, cytology or biopsy positive for HPV with 28.57%, age of first intercourse less than 16 years with 19.05%, ≥ 10 sexual partners with 18.18%, occasional use of condoms, with 16.67%, 16.36% with smoking, contact with sex workers 10.00%. Patients with findings consistent with HPV cytology urethral papillomas showed 64.29%, as 62.50% with urethral cytology negative. It was concluded that the diagnosis of HPV in addition to the urethral smear necessary the application of other complementary research methods.

Abstract: Los telómeros son complejos nucleoproteicos que protegen los extremos de cromosomas eucariotas de fenómenos de degradación y recombinación. En humanos, los telómeros miden 10-12 kpb en células somáticas normales, pero pueden reducirse hasta apenas 1-2 kpb en células tumorales de rápido crecimiento, debido a la replicación incompleta de estas estructuras en cada división mitótica. Los telómeros se acortan con la edad, lo cual puede estar asociado a inestabilidad genómica y a un incremento del riesgo de sufrir cáncer. El análisis de fragmentos de restricción teloméricos por Southern blot es en la actualidad el método estándar para la medición de la longitud de los telómeros. Sin embargo, una determinación precisa no es posible cuando el ADN está fragmentado o es escaso, como es el caso de las biopsias incluidas en parafina. En este trabajo se adecuó un ensayo de slot blot para cuantificar el contenido relativo, en lugar de la longitud, del ADN telomérico a partir de muestras de archivo de adenocarcinoma de colon. El contenido de ADN telomérico pudo ser medido de manera reproducible con apenas 75 ng de ADN genómico altamente degradado empleando detección de la hibridización por quimioluminiscencia. Telomeres shorten with age, which can be associated to genomic instability and to an increment of the risk of suffering from cancer. The standard method to measure the telomere length is the analysis of telomeric restriction fragments by Southern blot. However, a precise determination is not possible when the DNA is broken into small fragments or if it is scarce. In this work, a slot blot assay was adapted to quantify the relative content, instead of the length, of telomeric DNA from paraffin-embedded archival specimens of colon adenocarcinoma. The telomeric DNA content could be reproducibly measured with hardly 75 ng of highly degraded genomic DNA by chemiluminescent detection for hybridization.

Rethinking the Individual's Place in an African (Esan) Ontology

Abstract: The paper challenges the dominant view of the individual's place in an African (Esan) structure of Being or culture as one cast in the midst, and subject to the operations of (spiritual) forces, which are independently real and existent and can make or mar the individual's existence based on the kind of relationship he/she establishes with them. The individual is expected to have reverence and awe for these forces; hence he/she is consistently striving to fit into the established structure of Being for his/her own good. The paper asserts that this is not a fair situation because it is the individual who conceptualizes and constructs such an idea of Being to account for his/her perplexing, multifaceted experiences and his/her ontological wonder; the individual is the fundament of Being; he/she illuminates Being. Thus, though the structure of Being in which the Esan finds himself/herself playing important roles in his/her life and in the society, he/she must not always strive to fit into it, particularly when it outlasts its suitability for answering fundamental and baffling questions that keep confronting the individual in his/her existence. Since Being keeps unfolding and our knowledge of the Being-process is never complete, the individual must therefore consistently revisit, re-conceptualize and improve on the prevalent conception or structure of Being in order to account for current experiences that confront him/her.
ARE THEY WATCHING? TEST-TAKER VIEWING BEHAVIOR DURING AN L2 VIDEO LISTENING TEST

Abstract: The accessibility of video technology has made it possible to utilize both the auditory and visual channels to present listening texts in the second language (L2) classroom and on L2 listening tests. However, there has been little research investigating the extent to which L2 listeners actually watch the video monitor when presented with a listening video text. The current study investigated test-taker behavior on an L2 video listening test. Thirty-six test-takers were videotaped while taking a listening test composed of six separate video texts, and the amount of time test-takers made eye contact with the video monitor was computed. An analysis of the data indicated that the group of participants oriented to the video monitor 69% of the time while the video text was played. In addition, the study yielded valuable information concerning the consistency of the test-takers’ viewing behavior.
The Concept Of Person In An African Culture And Its Implication For Social Order

Abstract: The concept of a person held by a group of people is fundamental in understanding not only how a person within such framework of thought views himself but also how other matters such as the idea of being, morality, knowledge and truth that are essential for the ordering of the society are viewed. This is emphasised by the fact that such a concept encapsulates the role the society expects the individual to play for the attainment of an orderly society. The paper attempts an examination of the descriptive and normative concepts of a person common to many African communities with the aim of determining the role such a theory of person played in the actualization of social order in such communities and what lessons contemporary African societies can learn from such in meeting the challenges of current experiences.
Efficacious non-viral methods of reprogramming somatic cells

Abstract: Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells have demonstrated considerable potential in ex-vivo genetic manipulation and patient specific cell therapy. Adult somatic or mouse fibroblast cells are reprogrammed to iPS cells via retrovirus mediated transfer of four genes. While this procedure has yielded a high transfection efficiency with stable expression of the transgenes, it is associated with insertional mutagenesis and immunogenic responses. The safety of this method is still questionable given the development of leukemia and adverse immune responses to viral vectors in several gene therapy trials. Advances in non-viral gene delivery systems have been largely overlooked due to their inability to maintain expression for prolonged periods of time. While this is a substantial disadvantage in gene therapy, it represents a lesser concern in iPS therapy where expression of reprogramming factors is required for only eight to twelve days. Recent studies utilizing transposons, the PhiC3 integrase, and episomal vectors have show promising results in their potential utility as reprogramming methods in somatic cells. This paper reviews non-viral methods of gene delivery and discusses their potential benefits along with disadvantages as alternative methods to viral methods of gene transfer. Eliminating the effects of viral gene delivery or substituting it for a safer alternative represents a substantial barrier to overcome in order to significantly speed up introduction of cell based therapies to clinical trials.

A Structure for Quasars

Abstract: We propose a simple unifying structure for the inner regions of quasars and AGN. This empirically derived model links together the BALs, the narrow UV/X-ray ionized absorbers, the BELR, and the Compton scattering/fluorescing regions into a single structure. The model also suggests an origin for the large-scale bi-conical outflows. Some other potential implications of this structure are discussed.
Thermal Limit Spectroscopy as a Goal for X-ray Astronomy

Abstract: The R~300-1000 grating spectra from XMM-Newton and Chandra are a radical advance, allowing spectroscopic physics techniques to be applied to X-ray astronomy, revolutionizing a wide range of research. Ten years on these spectra will be routine, and higher resolution will be needed. I propose ``Thermal Limit Spectroscopy'' as the next natural goal for X-ray spectroscopy. This will open up new physics: plasma physics, velocity widths, Doppler shifts, line profiles, and absorption lines in photoionized plasmas. A resolution of R=3000-10,000 is required, and the technology is within reach.
