Cryptocurrencies: Are Disruptive Financial Innovations Here?  [PDF]
Gautam Vora
Modern Economy (ME) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/me.2015.67077
Abstract: Digital currencies, virtual currencies, in-game currencies, etc., have gathered a lot of attention, despite the difficulties of definition, from all corners of society for many years. Cryptocurrency has gained unprecedented attention since the birth of Bitcoin in 2009. Bitcoin is an online system of making and receiving payments in bitcoins. The system distinguishes itself by providing an open-source, cryptographically secure, confidentiality-preserving platform for transactions and/or making payments. The number of transactions as well as the number of accounts (held by individuals and businesses) is steadily increasing. A whole industry of service-providers has sprung up alongside. We consider the development of Bitcoin and its sister currencies as an important disruptive financial innovation which is here to stay unless throttled by ill-considered legislative or regulatory actions. Potential problems are analyzed and solutions offered. The overall assessment is that cryptocurrencies and variants of virtual currencies are a welcome development, they will offer competition to the existing modalities of money and governmental regulation, they will provide alternative means to economic agents for their transactions, and their innovative existence should be encouraged so that their beneficial features outperform any deleterious ones.
Governance and Poverty Reduction in Thailand  [PDF]
Pornpen Vora Sittha
Modern Economy (ME) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/me.2012.35064
Abstract: The objective of this study is to find out how Thailand achieves her economic growth along with poverty reduction without good governance practice. The relationships among economic growth, poverty indicators and governance indi- cators are computed by using Pearson’s correlation. The computed results show that the poverty reduction in Thailand is achieved through populist policies which are exercised with low quality of governance, not through growth. It sup- ports general belief that the “pro-poor growth” policy alone without good governance performance is insufficient for enhancing poverty reduction equally. A strategy for reducing poverty and income inequality for Thailand is not to en- hance economic growth but to promote major improvements in governance especially in variable that reflect the per- ception in three governance composite indicators namely Voice and Accountability, Political Stability and Absence of Violence, and Rule of Law.
Reassessing Export Diversification Strategies: A Cross-Country Comparison  [PDF]
Raul Gouvea, Gautam Vora
Modern Economy (ME) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/me.2015.61009
Abstract: This article uses a sample of 44 countries to assess their export performance over the period 1988-2012, using the single-index model, a part of the modern portfolio theory. The article builds four clusters of countries classified by the dominance of exports of 1) fuel products, 2) manufactured products, 3) food items and agricultural products and 4) ores and minerals. All countries in the sample obtain a dominant majority of their export earnings from these broad categories of products. The results are that the export portfolios comprised of manufactured products have a superior performance than export portfolios comprised of non-manufactured products. In particular, from a risk-return perspective the export portfolio of manufactured products dominates the export portfolio of food items and agricultural products which in turn dominates the export portfolio of fuel products and of ores and minerals. This domination validates a priori belief that manufacturing goods and exports is the best strategy for development of exports of a country. An important caveat is that this rosy scenario is unlikely to last. The implications for countries and firms are also discussed.
To Pace Or Not To Pace! Prevention Of Atrial Fibrillation After Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery
Amit Vora
Indian Pacing and Electrophysiology Journal , 2005,
Abstract: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a very undesirable, but unfortunately a common arrhythmia following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, occurring in up to 40% of patients. There is an increase in hospital stay and adds to the overall cost of the surgery. Atrial fibrillation occurrence may identify a subset of patients with reduced survival. Prevention of AF therefore would have a significant positive impact on patients undergoing CABG surgery. Based on the mechanism of postoperative AF, it seems likely that overcoming the slow atrial conduction with reduction in the dispersion of atrial refractoriness and suppression of the atrial ectopy should prevent AF. With these considerations atrial overdrive pacing to prevent post CABG AF has been evaluated with a number of randomized, controlled trials.

Abstract: We present the screening dependence theoretical investigations of the superconducting state parameters, i.e. electron-phonon coupling strength A, Coulomb pseudopotential μ*, transition temperature To, isotope effect exponent α, and effective interaction strength NoV of some CucZr100-c (C = 25, 30, 33, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 57, 60 at.%) binary amorphous alloys by employing the well-known empty core model potential of Ashcroft. Five screening functions proposed by Hartree, Taylor, Ichimaru-Utsumi, Farid et al. and Sarkar et al. are used to study the screening influence on the aforesaid superconducting properties. The transition temperature Tc obtained from the Ichimaru-Utsumi screening function is found to be in excellent agreement with available theoretical or experimental data. Also, the present results are found in qualitative agreement with the other earlier reported data, which confirms the superconducting phase in the amorphous alloys.
Phonon Dispersion in Equiatomic Li-Based Binary Alloys

中国物理快报 , 2008,
Abstract: The computations of the phonon dispersion curves (PDC) of four equiatomic Li-based binary alloys, namely Li0.5Na0.5, Li0.5K0.5, Li0.5Rb0.5 and Li0.5Cs0.5, to second order in the local model potential is discussed in terms of the real-space sum of Born von Karman central force constants. Instead of the concentration average of the force constants of metallic Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs, the pseudo-alloy atom (PAA) is adopted to compute directly the force constants of four equiatomic Li-based binary alloys. The exchange and correlation functions due to Hartree (H) and Ichimaru--Utsumi (IU) are used to investigate the influence of screening effects. The phonon frequencies of four equiatomic Li-based binary alloys in the longitudinal branch are more sensitive to the exchange and correlation effects in comparison with the transverse branches. However, the frequencies in the longitudinal branch are suppressed due to IU-screening function than the frequencies due to staticH-screening function.
STUDY OF SUPERCONDUCTING EFFECTS IN TRANSITION METALS BASED BINARY ALLOYS USING PSEUDOPOTENTIAL THEORY
Aditya M. Vora
Latvian Journal of Physics and Technical Sciences , 2011, DOI: 10.2478/v10047-011-0004-y
Abstract: Superconducting state parameters (SSP) (viz., electron-phonon coupling strength λ, Coulomb pseudopotential μ* transition temperature TC, isotope effect exponent α and effective interaction strength NOV) of transition metals based binary alloys are studied using - for the first time - a potential formalism with a pseudoatom-alloy model. In the study, noticeable influence of various exchange and correlation functions on λ and μ* has been revealed. The SSP results are found to be in a qualitative agreement with the available experimental data.
