Abstract: knowledge on what, how much, when and where hosts eat and live should help to understand the changes that occur in parasite communities because transmission of endoparasites is tightly linked to diet composition as well as ectoparasites are to the use that hosts make of the habitat. thus, geographical and ontogenetic variations in diet and parasite fauna of the thornfish bovichthys chilensis are described, and discussed taking into account the ontogenetic shifts in this host's niche. a total 122 individuals: 108 juveniles collected from the intertidal zone at four localities along the south-central coast of chile (between 33o and 40o s), and 14 adults collected from the shallow subtidal at a fifth locality (36o s), were examined for food contents and parasite infracommunities. food items were encountered in almost 70 % of fish examined with 25 prey items being recognized. only one of the prey items was found in both juvenile and adult fish. the diet of juvenile fish consisted mainly of amphipods and while that of adults was mainly composed of crustacean decapods. almost 40 % of fish examined harbored parasites with a total of 624 individuals and belonging to 16 taxa being identified, four of which were shared between juvenile and adult fish. prevalence, total intensity, richness, and diversity of parasites was similarly low among juvenile fish sampled at four different localities, while significant differences in total prevalence, dietary and parasite infracommunity composition among localities were found. absence of a clear relationship among juvenile fish between the composition of the diet and of infracommunities may be due to the fact that parasitoses are necessarily recent. adult hosts had infracommunities with greater total prevalence, total intensity, taxonomic richness and diversity than juveniles sampled at a nearby locality. all these observations could be associated to ontogenetic shifts in diet and concomitant shifts in parasite fauna. further studies ar

Knowledge on what, how much, when and where hosts eat and live should help to understand the changes that occur in parasite communities because transmission of endoparasites is tightly linked to diet composition as well as ectoparasites are to the use that hosts make of the habitat. Thus, geographical and ontogenetic variations in diet and parasite fauna of the thornfish Bovichthys chilensis are described, and discussed taking into

Abstract: we studied the parasite fauna and food contents of 38 juvenile of notothenia c.f. angustata specimens captured in the intertidal of island santa maría and maule, in the arauco gulf, chile. trophic habits of notothenia c.f. angustata were not different between localities, which was mainly algae. a total 11 parasitic taxa among were found with the digenean lecitasther macrocotyle, cestode larvae tetraphyllidea and diphyllidea and nematode ascarophis sp. being the dominant taxa. the abundance of parasites was similar in the two localities, although the infracommunity richness was higher in fish from maule. the most abundant parasite was l. macrocotyle in hosts from isla santa maría, while those from maule they were the diphyllidea larvae and nematodes ascarophis sp. the body length of the hosts was not a good predictor of the variations in abundance and richness at infracommunities, probably because of the early ontogenetic stage of fishes.

Abstract: cryptobia neghmei sp.n. is described from the blood of two species of flounder, paralichthys microps and p. adspersus, inhabiting the chilean coast in the southern pacific ocean. flagellates were elongate, slender, with two flagella and a conspicuous undulating membrane. it was distinguished from previously described species on the basis of its unusual shape and dimensions. all of 97 flounder were infected upon examination. developmental stages of kinetoplastid protozoans, perhaps c. neghmei sp. n., were observed in some leeches glyptonotobdella sp. that were found attached to flounder, which probably represent a mode for transmission among piscine hosts

Abstract: Heliothermic electricity generation is gaining popularity in several countries worldwide. In Brazil, this form of energy generation has not yet been explored for large scale projects. However, the country possesses extensive areas with normal and high-intensity direct irradiation and low seasonality factors, particularly in the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast. The region also presents other important features for setting up such plants: proximity to transmission lines, sufficient flatness, non-endangered vegetation, a suitable land use profile low maximum wind speeds, low population density, and more recently, an increase in the demand for local electric energy due to economic growth above the Brazilian average. A Geographic Information System includes a set of specialised resources that allow us to manipulate spatial data, providing quickness and efficiency in the identification of appropriate places for installing solar power plants while also preparing us for future scenarios, with regards to their impacts, costs and benefits. This article presents a study of the optimal location for thermoelectric power plants in the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast on the scale of 1:10,000,000. All provinces with good potential for the implementation of large-scale concentrating solar power plants are identified. Considering that the installed capacity for parabolic cylindrical concentrators in terrains with a steepness of less than 1% is 43.26 MW/km2 for systems without storage and 30.82 MW/km2 for systems with 6 hours of storage, the potential of the southeast region of Piauí alone is huge. Even with the lack of information about the urban areas, terrain continuity, and other variables, utilising only 10% of the identified potential area, or879.7 km2, would result in an installed capacity of 38.1-27.1 GW. This value corresponds to more than 1/3 of the potency of the current Brazilian electric system. If the same calculation is made for the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast, its capacity will be greater than 1000 GW.
Abnormal Succession of Insect Fauna on Pig Carcasses in Tandil (Argentina, Buenos Aires Province)  [PDF]

Advances in Entomology (AE) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ae.2014.22017
Abstract: This project was an attempt to reconstruct a death in dubious circumstance which happened in December 2002 in Tandil (Buenos Aires Province). Although the body was in open air, the entomological expertise discovered signs of delayed colonization. In this experiment, pig carcasses used as models to reconstruct the case. One was placed in shadow and another in sunlight (control). The hypothesis was that the climate and the topography affect the necrophagous insect succession in a mountain site. The families of Coleoptera found on the baits were: Silphidae, Dermestidae, Cleridae, Histeridae; of Díptera: Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae; Asilidae; of Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Encyrtidae and Vespidae.
