A telenovela como narrativa da na??o. Para uma experiência metodológica em comunidade virtual
VASSALLO DE LOPES,MARIA IMMACOLATA;
Signo y Pensamiento , 2010,

Comunicar , 2008, DOI: doi:10.3916/c30-2008-01-005
This paper describes a current research integrated in an international and interdisciplinary project and developed in a global environment between two different tendencies: integration and desintegration. In this scenary, television narrative arises as an essential tool to create and consolidate new cultural identities in order to get a popular narrative on the concept of nation.

Vassallo, Eduardo Cortez;Povedano, Andréa;Pupo Neto, Jo?o de Aguiar;Paulo, Francisco Lopes;
Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69912007000600006
Abstract: background: the objective of this paper was to study the role of the dietetic fiber (plantago ovata) in the protection and recovery of the intestinal wall of rats submitted to acetic acid induced inflammatory colitis. methods: 30 wistar male rats were studied, weighing between 260 and 300g, divided in three groups of 10 individuals. the distribution of the groups was made as follows: group i (n 10), named control group, received a standard diet during the whole experiment. group ii (n 10), named colitis group, received an equally standard diet during the whole experiment and 8% acetic acid that induced inflammatory colitis. group iii (n 10), named colitis + fiber, received a standard diet with addition of dietetic fiber ( 10 g of seeds and peels of plantago ovata for each 90 g of standard diet) and 8% acetic acid that induced inflammatory colitis. the experiment lasted 21 days and the inflammatory colitis induction was introduced on the fourteenth day in groups ii and iii. twenty-one days after the start of the experiment the animals were sacrificed and total colectomies were performed. the specimens were submitted to stereologic and histological analysis, and they statistically evaluated by the mann-whitney test. the weight variation of the animals was also measured during the experiment. the studied parameters were: mucosa, muscularis mucosa, submucosa, lamina propria, epithelial and proper epithelial layer partial volumes. conclusion: the results, through stereologic, histological and weight analysis, lead us to conclude that the addition of plantago ovata (dietetic fiber) prevents the alterations caused by the 8% acetic acid induced colitis in the experimental animals.

Abstract: chronic myeloproliferative diseases without the philadelphia chromosome marker (ph-), although first described 60 years ago, only became the subject of interest after the turn of the millennium. in 2001, the world health organization (who) defined the classification of this group of diseases and in 2008 they were renamed myeloproliferative neoplasms based on morphological, cytogenetic and molecular features. in 2005, the identification of a recurrent molecular abnormality characterized by a gain of function with a mutation in the gene encoding janus kinase 2 (jak2) paved the way for greater knowledge of the pathophysiology of myeloproliferative neoplasms. the jak2 mutation is found in 90-98% of polycythemia vera and in about 50% essential thrombocytosis and primary myelofibrosis. in addition to the jak2 mutation, other mutations involving tet2 (ten-eleven translocation), lnk (a membrane-bound adaptor protein); idh1/2 (isocitrate dehydrogenase 1/2 enzyme); asxl1 (additional sex combs-like 1) genes were found in myeloproliferative neoplasms thus showing the importance of identifying molecular genetic alterations to confirm diagnosis, guide treatment and improve our understanding of the biology of these diseases. currently, polycythemia vera, essential thrombocytosis, myelofibrosis, chronic neutrophilic leukemia, chronic eosinophilic leukemia and mastocytosis are included in this group of myeloproliferative neoplasms, but are considered different situations with individualized diagnostic methods and treatment. this review updates pathogenic aspects, molecular genetic alterations, the fundamental criteria for diagnosis and the best approach for each of these entities.
On a cardiac work rate based on ventricular pressure measurement  [PDF]
Luciana Moises Camilo, Dalton Valentim Vassallo, Regina Maria de Aquino
Journal of Biomedical Science and Engineering (JBiSE) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jbise.2013.69114
Abstract: We presented a cardiac work rate for one cycle cardiac based on the area of a Pressure Phase Plane, the velocity of activation and relaxation of the pressure curve, the interval of time and the variation of the pressure measurement on that cycle. We established an algebraic model to the Pressure Phase Plane area with a complete correlation of that model and the laboratory data for normal hypertensive and hypertrophied rat hearts (r = 0.99). We have obtained disjoint intervals for the cardiac work rate of the control group and the hypertrophied rat hearts as a consequence of the application of our algebraic model in those data acquisition.

Abstract: The incidence of penile cancer varies between populations but is rare in developed nations. Penile cancer is associated with a number of established risk factors and associated diseases including phimosis with chronic inflammation, human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, poor hygiene and smoking. The objective of this study was to identify genes related to this type of cancer. The detection of HPV was analyzed in 47 penile squamous cell carcinoma samples. HPV DNA was detected in 48.9% of penile squamous cell carcinoma cases. High-risk HPV were present in 42.5% of cases and low-risk HPV were detected in 10.6% of penile squamous cell carcinomas. The RaSH approach identified differential expression of Annexin A1 (ANXA1), p16, RPL6, PBEF1 and KIAA1033 in high-risk HPV positive penile carcinoma; ANXA1 and p16 were overexpressed in penile squamous cells positive for high-risk HPVs compared to normal penile samples by qPCR. ANXA1 and p16 proteins were significantly more expressed in the cells from high-risk HPV-positive penile carcinoma as compared to HPV-negative tumors (p<0.0001) independently of the subtype of the carcinoma. Overexpression of ANXA1 might be mediated by HPV E6 in penile squamous cell carcinoma of patients with high-risk HPVs, suggesting that this gene plays an important role in penile cancer.
Cervical Subcutaneous Emphysema; Sequelae from Occult Perforation of Sigmoid Diverticulum  [PDF]
Mohammed Choudhury, Michael Vassallo
International Journal of Clinical Medicine (IJCM) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/ijcm.2010.12015
Abstract: Background: An elderly lady presented with dyspnoea due to congestive cardiac failure. She was subsequently noted to have cervi-cal subcutaneous emphysema. Post mortem identified an occult perforation of a sigmoid diverticulum. Cervical subcutaneous em-physema is a recognised complication of gastrointestinal perforation; however, it is normally associated with upper gastrointestinal pathology, procedure related or sequel of existing disease. Summary: A perforated sigmoid diverticulum is a very rare cause of cer-vical subcutaneous emphysema. In this patient, signs and symptoms of peritonism were also late in onset and the location of the per-foration was not found despite high resolution imaging being used.
