Association of Serum Retinol Binding Protein 4 with Atherogenic Dyslipidemia in Morbid Obese Patients

PLOS ONE , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0078670
Abstract: Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) is an adipokine that may contribute to the development of insulin resistance. However, how this adipokine is affected and its possible involvement in lipid metabolism in obese patients with varying degrees of insulin resistance is yet to be determined. A total of 299 middle-aged morbid obese patients (BMI>40 kg/m2) were divided in euglycemic, metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetic. Anthropometric measurements, biochemical variables and systemic RBP4 levels were determined. RBP4 levels were significantly higher in patients with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes than in euglycemic subjects (42.9±14.6; 42.3±17.0 and 37.4±11.7 μg/ml, respectively) and correlated with triglycerides but not with those of HOMA-IR in the whole population. The multivariate regression model revealed that triglycerides were the strongest predictor of systemic RBP4 levels. Analysis of lipoprotein subfractions in a subpopulation of 80 subjects showed an altered profile of insulin resistant states characterized by higher VLDL, sdLDL and small HDL percentages and lower large HDL percentage. Although RBP4 levels correlated significantly with LDL particle size and small HDL percentage, the latter parameter was independently associated only with RBP4. Our study reveals that systemic RBP4 levels could play an important role in lipid metabolism in morbid obesity, increasing triglyceride levels and contributing to the formation of small HDL.
Toledo,Víctor M;
Polis (Santiago) , 2012, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-65682012000300014
Abstract: a brief summary is presented on the meaning of the crisis ofindustrial or modern civilization, from an historical perspective that covers theentire landscape of the human past and of life. it is argued that the central dilemmais between tradition and modernity, and that to overcome the crisis is requiredovercome the domain of rationalism, the dependence on fossil energy, theabandonment to which the individual has been convicted and the corporate phaseof capitalism. the construction of social power is identified as the axial stone of atruly emancipatory political ecology. we conclude that the coming decades will becrucial as we will live the ultimate conflict between the insane ape and the thinkingape, between particular and perverse interests and cosmic consciousness. on thatdepends the survival of the human species or its disappearance.
Toledo,Víctor M;
Polis (Santiago) , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-65682009000100013
Abstract: humanity has begun to be perceive itself as a species that would be able to face extinction, and if that will be or not be our future will be defined by the conscious or the insane. it is argued that the main illusion of human being is to keep on believing that we are intelligent beings, when in reality we have been attempting against our own sources of survival. the author asks: is there not a deep and unequivocal gap between the human being who is provided with species conscience and the one who is not? does it not seem that actually two different speciesare procreated inside a same biological guild? the article moves ahead stating that an optimistic possibility of future could stand on the conscience of species, a politics which should be a "pact for life" and a planetary ethics for survival.
Longa, Víctor M.;
Signos filosóficos , 2009,
Abstract: currently, many scholars take the baldwin effect (i.e. the idea that learned behaviors may become inherited) to be a powerful evolutionary mechanism. however, its importance derives from the neo-darwinist assumption that inheritance is a purely genetic mechanism. from a wider notion of inheritance, which considers that (1) there is much more to it than genes, and (2) extra-genomic inheritance has important evolutionary consequences, an ontogenetic adaptation may have evolutionary consequences in spite of not being seated in the genome. accordingly, this paper asserts that the relevance of the baldwin effect should become relativized.
Mínguez, Víctor;
Varia Historia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-87752007000200003
Abstract: all the spanish monarchs, which were ascended to the throne, were proclaimed in the main square of the new spain's cities. this ritual, of castilian origin, was made to demonstrate, in a public way, the loyalty to the new king, physically absent in the viceroyalty, but symbolically present thanks to the art. images, sounds and words were cleverly combined in each occasion making possible an effective propagandistic spectacle. in 1747 take place the oath by fernando vi ceremonies, and in 1808 ferndinand vii's. to compare both celebrations is quite interesting, because the first one coincides with the apogee of the colony, while seconds is celebrated in a serious political conjuncture of 1808. this analysis allows us to justify conclusions about the mexican evolution of this celebration pattern and about the new spain' subjects feelings about monarchy.
Geographical changes in relative frequency of inversions in chromosome III of Drosophila pseudoobscura among natural populations from Mexico
Salceda Víctor M.
Genetika , 2009, DOI: 10.2298/gensr0902155s
Abstract: Chromosomal polymorphism in natural populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura have been broadly studied in the USA but scarcely in Mexico where only about 60 localities have been analyzed. Differences among both regions are notorious with respect to their chromosomal constitution. Northern populations, those of USA, have as representative inversions the sequences ST, AR and CH contrasting with those in Southern populations (Mexico) in which prevail the gene arrangements TL, CU and SC. Assuming as a probable mechanism that has allowed these substitutions the flow generated by the presence of a North - South clines, we took as a goal find out if such clines really exist. With that objective in mind we studied 29 populations of this species distributed along four North - South transects. Specimens of D. pseudoobscura caught by attracting them with fermenting bananas were carried to the laboratory where from each female an isofemale line was established. When their offspring appeared a single larva from each isofemale was taken, its salivary glands extracted and stained with a solution of lacto-aceto- orcein, by these means the polytene chromosomes were obtained. On these chromosomes we identified, for each larva, the inversion (s) carried in the third chromosome, in such a way 3439 third chromosomes were analyzed. Among the 29 localities we identified 17 different inversions but the number of them varied from population to population from three to eleven. Relative frequencies of each inversion at every location were calculated and with them for each transect the presence or absence of clines was determined. Among each transect the existence of clines was observed only between two or three near by populations, but we were not able to find a clear manifestation of the presence of clines along a complete transect. Our results at this respect are similar to those previously reported for USA populations. A mechanism that explains North - South substitutions of predominant inversions remains as open question.
Relative frequencies of the “sex-ratio” inversion in natural populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura from Mexico
Salceda Víctor M.
Genetika , 2011, DOI: 10.2298/gensr1102321s
Abstract: Sex-ratio (proportion of males) in a species is related to a not entirely explained mechanism of sex determination. In Drosophila, sex is determined by the proportion of X chromosomes vs. autosomes. A decrease in the proportion of males vs. females, known as sex-ratio, is characteristic to several Drosophila species, and is related to an inversion in the sexual chromosome the so called “sex-ratio” (SR) condition. In this occasion we study the presence of that inversion in several populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura from Mexico. With this purpose we did collections of this species on Nevado de Colima,Col., Valparaíso, Zac, Zirahuén, Mich., Tulancingo, Hgo. and Amecameca, Mex. Flies were captured in nature and carried to the laboratory were individual cultures of each female were established, when the offsprig emerged salivary glands of a single larva from each culture were extracted and stained with an aceto-orcein solution and the corresponding genotype for the third and sex chromosome determined and their relative frequencies calculated. The corresponding frequencies of the “sex-ratio” inversion in the localities analyzed were: Nevado de Colima 21.8 %, Valparaiso 18.8 %, Zirahuén 11.4 %, Tulancingo 6.8 % and Amecameca 6.8 %. Apparently an East-West cline distribution is present in these populations. Relative frequencies for inversions in the third chomosome were recorded and relationships between third and X chromosomes inversions performed. Comparisons with similar studies on this and other species are pointed out.
