Instruments and Experiments Control Methodology Based on IVI and LXI Technologies

Abstract: In this paper we present a new model to control the instruments and experiments in a remote laboratory. This model is based on LAN networks and a control methodology through reusable drivers. The objective is to obtain a software control architecture independent of the hardware of the laboratory, so each institution can use its own equipments and experiments based on its needs and with minimal restrictions regarding to the hardware of the lab.

Abstract: This paper presents the work that has been developed in parallel to the VISIR project. The objective of this paper is to present the results of the validations processes that have been carried out to check the control methodology. This method has been developed with the aim of being independent of the instruments of the labs.

Abstract: In the engineering curriculum, remote labs are becoming a popular learning tool. The advantages of these laboratories and the different deployments have been analyzed many times, but in this paper we want to show the results of the students’ opinion about WebLab-Deusto as a learning tool. This work is focused on the subjects Programmable Logic (PL) in the third year of Electronics Engineering and in Electronics Design (ED) of the fifth year of the same degree. The paper presents the results of the surveys done by students since 2004. This survey consists of fifteen questions and its main objective is to measure the acceptance, usability and usefulness of the remote laboratory developed at University of Deusto from the students point of view.
Using VISIR: Experiments, Subjects and Students

Abstract: The paper presents the results of applying the VISIR (Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality) system at the course of analog electronics for various degrees of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Deusto (Spain). The efficiency of the VISIR had been monitored during past three years. Students’ feedback was collected and analyzed. The research shows: 1) VISIR system is functional and useful learning instrument; 2) teacher experience at VISIR plays crucial role in its integration into student experimentation activities; 3) students get best knowledge and skills in the analog electronics from combination of experiments at traditional laboratory and remote lab/ VISIR.

Abstract: The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Deusto has had available a WebLab oriented to Microelectronics since 2001. Currently, the field of WebLab design is very active, and several other universities are adopting them as a sign of quality and distinction for Microelectronics teaching. The first part of this paper shows several requirements that a WebLab should meet and the next points discuss three remarkable aspects of WebLab-DEUSTO: a) its distinctive software-hardware architecture, b) its use with a mobile telephone and c) the evaluation of its use by yhe students and the academic results they obtained.
LXI Technologies for Remote Labs: An Extension of the VISIR Project

Abstract: Several remote labs to support analog circuits are presented in this work. They are analyzed from the software and the hardware point of view. VISIR remote lab is one of these labs. After this analysis, a new VISIR remote lab approach is presented. This extension of the VISIR project is based on LXI technologies with the aim of becoming it in a remote lab easily interchangeable with other instruments. The addition of new components and experiments is also easier and cheaper.
Influence of MeV H+ ion beam flux on cross-linking and blister formation in PMMA resist

Abstract: In soft lithography, a pattern is produced in poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomer by casting from a master mould. The mould can be made of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) resist by utilising either its positive or negative tone induced by an ion beam. Here we have investigated the irradiation conditions for achieving complete cross-linking and absence of blister formation in PMMA so that its negative characteristic can be used in making master moulds. PMMA thin films approximately 9 μm thick on Si were deposited by spin coating. The 2-MeV H+ ion beam was generated using a 1.7-MV tandem Tandetron accelerator. The beam was collimated to a 500×500 μm2 cross section using programmable proximity aperture lithography system with a real-time ion beam monitoring system and a high precision current integrator. The irradiated areas were investigated by a standard scanning electron microscope and a profilometer. It was found that both the ion beam flux and the stopping power of the ions in the polymer have a critical influence on the blister formation.

Abstract: stenocereus griseus and cereus repandus are two of the most abundant and widely distributed columnar cacti in the arid and semiarid regions of venezuela. despite their value as keystone species for wildlife and their potential economic value, information on their reproductive activity and regeneration capacities is quite limited. these aspects were evaluated in natural populations from padre diego, lara state, and paraguana peninsula, falcon state. these cacti have broad time windows for reproduction and considerably high fecundity levels (s. griseus: 44,225 seeds/ind, c. repandus: 322,749 seeds/ind), which confer them great advantages in terms of natural regeneration and propagation. these species depend on nurse plants for their establishment. the highest percentages of survival occurred under the shadow of trees. under natural conditions, these species can produce half a ton of fruit pulp per hectare.
