Abstract: stenocereus griseus and cereus repandus are two of the most abundant and widely distributed columnar cacti in the arid and semiarid regions of venezuela. despite their value as keystone species for wildlife and their potential economic value, information on their reproductive activity and regeneration capacities is quite limited. these aspects were evaluated in natural populations from padre diego, lara state, and paraguana peninsula, falcon state. these cacti have broad time windows for reproduction and considerably high fecundity levels (s. griseus: 44,225 seeds/ind, c. repandus: 322,749 seeds/ind), which confer them great advantages in terms of natural regeneration and propagation. these species depend on nurse plants for their establishment. the highest percentages of survival occurred under the shadow of trees. under natural conditions, these species can produce half a ton of fruit pulp per hectare.

Abstract: Stenocereus griseus y Cereus repandus son dos de las cactáceas columnares más abundantes y ampliamente distribuidas en las regiones áridas y semiáridas de Venezuela. A pesar de su valor como especies clave para la fauna silvestre y de su potencial valor económico, la información sobre su actividad reproductiva y capacidad de regeneración es muy limitada. Dichos aspectos fueron evaluados en poblaciones naturales de Padre Diego, estado Lara y la Península de Paraguaná, estado Falcón. Estos cactus poseen patrones reproductivos temporalmente amplios y niveles de fecundidad elevados (S. griseus: 44.225 semillas/ind, C. repandus: 322.749 semillas/ind), que les confieren grandes ventajas para su regeneración natural y propagación. Estas especies dependen de plantas nodriza para su establecimiento, presentando los porcentajes más elevados de supervivencia bajo la sombra de árboles. En condiciones naturales, estas plantas rinden media tonelada de pulpa de fruta por hectárea. La cáscara de cacao (Theobroma cacao L.): Una posible fuente comercial de pectinas

Abstract: commercial exploitation of cocoa (theobroma cacao l.) generates a volume of hulls that could be used in the production of pectins on an industrial scale. therefore, pectins from cocoa hulls were extracted at different ph and temperature conditions, and their main chemical characteristics were evaluated. edta at 0.5% was used for the extraction at phs 3, 4 and 5 and temperatures of 60, 75 and 90oc, under a 3^2 factorial design. the response variables were yield, content of anhydrous galacturonic acid (aga), content of metoxil, degree of esterification and equivalent weight of the pectins extracted. the strength of the pectic gel was determined with a ta - xt2 texturometer. strawberry jam was made with the pectin extracted, and its acceptability was determined using a 7-point hedonic scale. the results obtained were as follows: an extraction yield from 2.64 to 4.69 g/100g; an aga content between 49.8 and 64.06 g/100g; a content of metoxil between 4.72 and 7.18 g/100g; a degree of esterification between 37.94 and 52.20 %; an equivalent weight from 385.47 to 464.61 g/equivalent of h+, and a degree of gelation between 28.64 and 806.03 g force. the pectin extracted at ph 4 and 90 oc showed a gelation power of 422.16 g force, purity 62.26 g/100g of aga, and a yield of extraction of 3.89 g/100g and allowed to prepare a jam with an average level of liking of ?like moderately?. pectins from cocoa hulls show potential application in the food industry, but it is necessary to optimize the extraction parameters to increase its yield.
Pulpa del fruto del cardón dato (Stenocereus griseus, Cactaceae) como materia prima para la elaboración de mermelada

Abstract: this study aimed to examine the possibility of producing marmalades from the fruit pulp of the red and white varieties of cardón dato (stenocereus griseus). we developed the formulations of the marmalades and evaluated their stability during three months of storage at room temperature. as first step, we characterized the fruits of the two color varieties, observing that despite the considerable difference between both color varieties, there were no significant differences in average weight, dimensions and proportion of pulp, skin and seeds. the pulp of the two color types had high ph (5,2) values and low contents of reductor sugars (3,59 g/100g white variety 2,23 g/100g red variety), non reductor sugars (0,75 g/100g white variety and 2,03 g/100g red variety), pectin (0,14 g/100g white variety and 0,23 g/100g red variety) and acids (7,67 g/100g white variety and 0,15 g/100g red variety). it is needed to include sugar, pectin, and citric acid in the marmalade formula. the first marmalades produced were gummy, a problem that we solved adding the acid from the beginning of the making process. during the three months of storage, the marmalades had good acceptance by the evaluators, this despite slight fluctuations observed in ph, solid contents, and acidity.

Abstract: summary a characterization and evaluation of the productiva capacity and of fruit quality of cultivars araque, rangel, and rosita, from "pie de franco" trees colleted in the central region of venezuela and introduced in 1986 to the ceniap collection was performed. eighty three morphoagronomic descriptors were used and along with tree dimensions and harvest records per tree to determine productiva efficiency thru use of fructification index. fruit quality was evaluated by physical and chemical indexes. results showed, that despite their outstanding position in relation to other materias collected nationwide, the attributes they posses are appropriate for an internal market, but show limitations for export purposes.

Abstract: a characterization and evaluation of the productive capacity and fruit quality of the edward, glenn, irwin, otts and parvin cultivars was made. these cultivars were introduced from florida (usa) in the ceniap collections as an alternative to diversify supply. eighty three morph- agronomics descriptor were used and, based on tree dimensions and the harvest register by tree, in the different productive life periods, the productive efficiency was determined thru the fructification index. fruit quality was evaluated thru the physical and chemical index. results indicated that the cultivars have quality attributes that fit with the consumers requirements. the use of techniques and procedures to control tree size are suggested, thus allowing smaller planting distances and productivity in commercial farm.

Abstract: according to who/fao, low fruit and vegetables (f&v) intake is one of the main risks factors of non communicable diseases (ncd) accounting for the high mortality rates occurring in venezuela. f&v have been absent from venezuelan official health programs and policies for prevention of ncd, as well as from programs aiming to increase food supply, even if food guides recommend its consumption. this makes venezuela a country with multiple opportunities for launching a successful program for promotion of f&v consumption, such as ?5 a day?. this work attempts to present an overview of the advances made in order to grow awareness and public perception of the benefits of f&v consumption in the country
Influence of MeV H+ ion beam flux on cross-linking and blister formation in PMMA resist

Abstract: In soft lithography, a pattern is produced in poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomer by casting from a master mould. The mould can be made of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) resist by utilising either its positive or negative tone induced by an ion beam. Here we have investigated the irradiation conditions for achieving complete cross-linking and absence of blister formation in PMMA so that its negative characteristic can be used in making master moulds. PMMA thin films approximately 9 μm thick on Si were deposited by spin coating. The 2-MeV H+ ion beam was generated using a 1.7-MV tandem Tandetron accelerator. The beam was collimated to a 500×500 μm2 cross section using programmable proximity aperture lithography system with a real-time ion beam monitoring system and a high precision current integrator. The irradiated areas were investigated by a standard scanning electron microscope and a profilometer. It was found that both the ion beam flux and the stopping power of the ions in the polymer have a critical influence on the blister formation.

Abstract: In this paper we present a new model to control the instruments and experiments in a remote laboratory. This model is based on LAN networks and a control methodology through reusable drivers. The objective is to obtain a software control architecture independent of the hardware of the laboratory, so each institution can use its own equipments and experiments based on its needs and with minimal restrictions regarding to the hardware of the lab.
