Cuadernos de Gestión , 2002,
Abstract: Emaús Bilbao Cooperative Company is a social economy and solidarity organization for socio-labour insertion. It is dedicated to the comprehensive management of solid urban waste. It has its headquarters in Bilbao and carries out its work in Vizcaya. From 1970, the year in which Emaús established itself in Vizcaya, to the present day, the organization has experienced an evolution which has led it to change its management direction. Gone are the days when they were only known as “the rag and bone men of Emaus” with all the connotations that were associated with that name. At present we find a company which has adopted new management formulas without losing the characteristics of its social and solidarity project. This has enabled it to face up to the prevailing conditions in todays economic climate. In this way it has been able to guarantee its survival. The comprehensive management of solid urban waste is made up of four diverse parts: The location of the urban solid waste through the receiving of telephone calls, its collection and selection, and the final elimination of those things that can not be incorporated again into the consumer chain. Through this case, the problems that arise for the organization with reference to the management of Human Resources are analysed. These are related above all to the motivational and decision making aspects due to the diverse characteristics as much in their own workers as in the organization.

|| The `environment' factor has become increasingly important in business management. The relationship between the environmental behavior of the company and its economic performance has been one of the recurring themes of research, especially in the last two decades. However, many gaps still exist in this field of study, such as the lack of a theoretical framework and a methodology that allow reliable research in order to empirically contrast and compare the results of the different studies. Thus, we found that the empirical evidence on this relationship sometimes presents contradictory results. Therefore, this work has two objectives. On the one hand, we review the existing literature in order to identify and systematize the type of studies, the analysis techniques, the key factors of such relationship, the shortcomings and limitations of these studies, etc. trying to throw some light on the sign of the target relation. On the other hand, we look for fostering critical reflection, and we make some suggestions for future research.

Cuadernos de Gestión , 2001,
Abstract: For several years, small shops in Spain and in other European countries have found themselves facing up to a situation of increasing convergence with the inrush of new commercial ways which are more vertical and horizontally integrated and better prepared to compete in price and variety. Faced with this fact, the trade associations (central offices of purchasing) offer themselves as an alternative designed to reduce distances on these two questions and at the same time providing certain services to help the small trader to manage his business more efficiently and effectively. In this article before you, this recent evolution and the supply trend by the small shops through the trade associations (central offices of purchasing) in Spain are analysed. Then, through an empirical study, it is tried to establish the answers of the small shops to a suggested relationship of points in favour and against which grouping together in a trade association (central office of purchasing) would suppose. With regards to this question, it is analysed in a particular way, to what extent we can relate the size of the commercial company with the degree of agreement with the trade associations (central office of purchasing).

Abstract: Kukuxumusu, S.L. is an organization that commercializes draws in different quality supports to be bought, used and enjoyed by people of any age, sex and condition, who expect amusing, original and different messages of a T-shirt, a cup, a key-ring. Kukuxumusu develops its activity in the souvenir and gift’s markets. The article analizes the global market strategy adopted by Kukuxumusu related to its portfolio, distribution channels and communication instruments. Since 1989, the year they sold their first T-shirt in San Fermin feasts, Kukuxumusu has become a firm with a strong corporate culture, which has grown making use of the new technologies. Both the brand management and the differentiation based on intangible attributes, are key factors in Kukuxumusu’s marketing strategy.

Abstract: Natural killer (NK) cells play an essential role in the fight against tumor development. Over the last years, the progress made in the NK cell biology field and in deciphering how NK cell function is regulated, is driving efforts to utilize NK cell-based immunotherapy as a promising approach for the treatment of malignant diseases. Therapies involving NK cells may be accomplished by activating and expanding endogenous NK cells by means of cytokine treatment or by transferring exogenous cells by adoptive cell therapy and/or by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). NK cells that are suitable for adoptive cell therapy can be derived from different sources, including ex vivo expansion of autologous NK cells, unstimulated or expanded allogeneic NK cells from peripheral blood, derived from CD34+ hematopoietic progenitors from peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood, and NK cell lines. Besides, genetically modified NK cells expressing chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) or cytokines genes may also have a relevant future as therapeutic tools. Recently, it has been described the derivation of large numbers of functional and mature NK cells from pluripotent stem cells (PSCs), both embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which adds another tool to the expanding NK cell-based cancer immunotherapy arsenal.
Involvement of platelet-tumor cell interaction in immune evasion. Potential role of podocalyxin-like protein 1

Abstract: Besides their essential role in hemostasis and thrombosis, platelets are involved in the onset of cancer metastasis by interacting with tumor cells. Platelets release secretory factors that promote tumor growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Furthermore, the formation of platelet-tumor cell aggregates in the bloodstream provides cancer cells with an immune escape mechanism by protecting circulating malignant cells from immune-mediated lysis by natural killer (NK) cells. Platelet-tumor cell interaction is accomplished by specific adhesion molecules, including integrins, selectins, and their ligands. Podocalyxin-like protein 1 (PCLP1) is a selectin ligand protein which overexpression has been associated with several aggressive cancers. PCLP1 expression enhances cell adherence to platelets in an integrin-dependent process and through the interaction with P-selectin expressed on activated platelets. However, the involvement of PCLP1-induced tumor-platelet interaction in tumor immune evasion still remains unexplored. The identification of selectin ligands involved in the interaction of platelets with tumor cells may provide help for the development of effective therapies to restrain cancer cell dissemination. This article summarizes the current knowledge on molecules that participate in platelet-tumor cell interaction as well as discusses the potential role of PCLP1 as a molecule implicated in tumor immune evasion.
Influence of MeV H+ ion beam flux on cross-linking and blister formation in PMMA resist

Maejo International Journal of Science and Technology , 2012,
Abstract: In soft lithography, a pattern is produced in poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomer by casting from a master mould. The mould can be made of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) resist by utilising either its positive or negative tone induced by an ion beam. Here we have investigated the irradiation conditions for achieving complete cross-linking and absence of blister formation in PMMA so that its negative characteristic can be used in making master moulds. PMMA thin films approximately 9 μm thick on Si were deposited by spin coating. The 2-MeV H+ ion beam was generated using a 1.7-MV tandem Tandetron accelerator. The beam was collimated to a 500×500 μm2 cross section using programmable proximity aperture lithography system with a real-time ion beam monitoring system and a high precision current integrator. The irradiated areas were investigated by a standard scanning electron microscope and a profilometer. It was found that both the ion beam flux and the stopping power of the ions in the polymer have a critical influence on the blister formation.
