Hypertexts: From the digital environment to the printed books of children’s literature: a case in Greek

Abstract: Hypertext is a particular kind of text that allows the readers move to its end through a non-sequential way as it consists of different “paths” and “links”. In comparison to the ordinary printed texts, hypertexts present significant differences referring to their structural characteristics, while they make the reading process different as well. This open- ended type of database system was created in the digital environment but nowadays it’s also found in printed works of children’s literature. A great Greek author, Eugene Trivizas, has written two masterpieces of this kind of texts. The complex structure of these literary books affects positively the cognitive, social and emotional development of young readers but it makes their approach in the classroom difficult. However, differentiated teaching is a modern instructive method that can be used by the teachers in the classroom in order to help their students to deal with difficulties of this kind.

Abstract: N-Aryl-S,S-dimethylsulfimides 3(Ar = 4-NO2C6H4), 4 (Ar = Ph) and 5 (Ar = 4-Tol)react with Appel salt 1 to give the corresponding N-aryl-(4-chloro-5H-1,2,3-dithiazolylidene)benzenamines 8 (Ar = 4-NO2C6H4), 9 (Ar = Ph) and 10 (Ar = 4-Tol) in 84, 94 and 87% yields, respectively. The reaction proceeds in the absence of base and a proposed reaction mechanism is given.
Spontaneous perforation of solitary ulcer of transverse colon

Abstract: Spontaneous ruptures of the colon and rectum are extremely uncommon clinical entities and always require laparotomy. A 44-year-old female was admitted with a 12-hour history of severe abdominal pain periumbilically and at the right hypochondrium. The patient was immediately transferred to the department of surgery for close surgical observation. Computed tomography (CT) of the entire abdomen performed just before the operation demonstrated thickening of the wall of the ascending colon with pericolic fat stranding. Surgery revealed a perforation at the antimesenteric wall of the transverse colon and segmental colectomy of the transverse colon was performed. The histological evaluation demonstrated a perforated solitary ulcer of the transverse colon. There are only few known etiologic factors concerning spontaneous ruptures of the colon and rectum and usually none of these causative factors can easily be recognised. Their clinical appearance is most of the times acute abdomen and, despite the use of all appropriate diagnostic methods, the diagnosis is usually set postoperatively.
SocIoS API: A data aggregator for accessing user generated content from online social networks

Abstract: Following the boost in popularity of online social networks, both enterprises and researchers looked for ways to access the social dynamics information and user generated content residing in these spaces. This endeavor, however, presented several challenges caused by the heterogeneity of data and the lack of a common way to access them. The SocIoS framework tries to address these challenges by providing tools that operate on top of multiple popular social networks allowing uniform access to their data. It provides a single access point for aggregating data and functionality from the networks, as well as a set of analytical tools for exploiting them. In this paper we present the SocIoS API, an abstraction layer on top of the social networks exposing operations that encapsulate the functionality of their APIs. Currently, the component provides support for seven social networks and is flexible enough to allow for the seamless addition of more.
Performance Measurements of a Dvb-T System Affected by 5-MHz Generic Adjacent Channel Interference

Abstract: With the advent of DVB-T in most European countries, the European Union has decided to end all analogue television broadcasts in its member countries until 2012. This analogue switch-off, as well as the increased spectral efficiency of the DVB-T protocol will create a surplus of spectrum in the UHF band, part of which is to be used by mobile communications systems. In order for this "digital dividend" to be shared efficiently, the coexistence and interference parameters between DVB-T and other services (designated as IMT-Advanced by the International Telecommunications Union) have to be studied. In this paper a generic 5 MHz interfering signal is broadcasted in close proximity to a stationary DVB-T receiver. Various DVB-T parameters are then measured and analyzed for different frequency values and power levels of the interfering signal.
Magnetic Graphene Oxide: Effect of Preparation Route on Reactive Black 5 Adsorption

Abstract: In this study, the effect of preparation route of magnetic graphene oxide (mGO) on Reactive Black 5 (RB5) adsorption was investigated. The synthesis of mGO was achieved both with (i) impregnation method (mGOi nanoparticles), and (ii) co-precipitation (mGOp nanoparticles). After synthesis, the full characterization with various techniques (SEM, FTIR, XRD, DTA, DTG, VSM) was achieved revealing many possible interactions/forces of dye-composite system. Effects of initial solution pH, effect of temperature, adsorption isotherms and kinetics were investigated in order to conclude about the aforementioned effect of the preparation method on dye adsorption performance of the magnetic nanocomposites. The adsorption evaluation of the magnetic nanoparticles presented higher adsorption capacity of mGOp derivative (188 mg/g) and lower of mGOi (164 mg/g). Equilibrium experiments are also performed studying the effect of contact time (pseudo-first and -second order equations) and temperature (isotherms at 25, 45 and 65 °C fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich model). A full thermodynamic evaluation was carried out, calculating the parameters of enthalpy, free energy and entropy (ΔH 0, ΔG 0 and ΔS 0).
MiR-205 Is Progressively Down-Regulated in Lymph Node Metastasis but Fails as a Prognostic Biomarker in High-Risk Prostate Cancer

Abstract: The treatment of high-risk prostate cancer (HRPCa) is a tremendous challenge for uro-oncologists. The identification of predictive moleculobiological markers allowing risk assessment of lymph node metastasis and systemic progression is essential in establishing effective treatment. In the current study, we investigate the prognostic potential of miR-205 in HRPCa study and validation cohorts, setting defined clinical endpoints for both. We demonstrate miR-205 to be significantly down-regulated in over 70% of the HRPCa samples analysed and that reconstitution of miR-205 causes inhibition of proliferation and invasiveness in prostate cancer (PCa) cell lines. Additionally, miR-205 is increasingly down-regulated in lymph node metastases compared to the primary tumour indicating that miR-205 plays a role in migration of PCa cells from the original location into extraprostatic tissue. Nevertheless, down-regulation of miR-205 in primary PCa was not correlated to the synchronous presence of metastasis and failed to predict the outcome for HRPCa patients. Moreover, we found a tendency for miR-205 up-regulation to correlate with an adverse outcome of PCa patients suggesting a pivotal role of miR-205 in tumourigenesis. Overall, we showed that miR-205 is involved in the development and metastasis of PCa, but failed to work as a useful clinical biomarker in HRPCa. These findings might have implications for the use of miR-205 as a prognostic or therapeutic target in HRPCa.
Conditions determining the morphology and nanoscale magnetism of Co nanoparticles: Experimental and numerical studies

Abstract: Co-based nanostructures ranging from core-shell to hollow nanoparticles were produced by varying the reaction time and the chemical environment during the thermal decomposition of Co2(CO)8. Both structural characterization and kinetic model simulation illustrate that the diffusivities of Co and oxygen determine the growth ratio and the final morphology of the nanoparticles. Exchange coupling between Co and Co-oxide in core/shell nanoparticles induced a shift of field-cooled hysteresis loops that is proportional to the shell thickness, as verified by numerical studies. The increased nanocomplexity when going from core/shell to hollow particles, also leads to the appearance of hysteresis above 300 K due to an enhancement of the surface anisotropy resulting from the additional spin-disordered surfaces.
High coercivity cobalt carbide nanoparticles processed via polyol reaction: A new permanent magnet material

Abstract: Cobalt carbide nanoparticles were processed using polyol reduction chemistry that offers high product yields in a cost effective single-step process. Particles are shown to be acicular in morphology and typically assembled as clusters with room temperature coercivities greater than 4 kOe and maximum energy products greater than 20 KJ/m3. Consisting of Co3C and Co2C phases, the ratio of phase volume, particle size, and particle morphology all play important roles in determining permanent magnet properties. Further, the acicular particle shape provides an enhancement to the coercivity via dipolar anisotropy energy as well as offering potential for particle alignment in nanocomposite cores. While Curie temperatures are near 510K at temperatures approaching 700 K the carbide powders experience an irreversible dissociation to metallic cobalt and carbon thus limiting operational temperatures to near room temperature.
