Modified Legendre Collocation Block Method for Solving Initial Value Problems of First Order Ordinary Differential Equations  [PDF]

Abstract:
In this paper, block procedure for some k-step linear multi-step methods, using the Legendre polynomials as the basis functions, is proposed. Discrete methods were given which were used in block and implemented for solving the initial value problems, being continuous interpolant derived and collocated at grid points. Some numerical examples of ordinary differential equations were solved using the derived methods to show their validity and the accuracy. The numerical results obtained show that the proposed method can also be efficient in solving such problems.

Abstract: A numerical analysis has been carried out to study the problem of plane stagnation double-diffusive MHD convective flow with convective boundary condition in a porous media. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations have been reduced to systems of nonlinear ordinary differential equations by the similarity transformations. The transformed equations are solved numerically by using the classical fourth order Runge-Kutta method together with the shooting technique implemented on a computer program. The effects of the physical parameters are examined on the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles. Numerical data for the skin-friction coefficients, Nusselt and Sherwood numbers have been tabulated for various parametric conditions and are also shown graphically and discussed.

Abstract: An analysis of the viscous dissipation effect of the mixed convection MHD flow towards a stagnation point with convective boundary condition embedded in a porous media has been the subject of this research work. The nonlinear partial differential equations arising from the flow modeling were transformed into coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations and subsequently solved using the Runge-Kutta shooting method. Effect of the relevant thermo-physical parameters has also been numerically investigated and visualized.

Abstract: This paper examines the phonotactic processes in Yoruba adaptation of English syllable structures. It investigates the nativization of English consonant structure in the word-initial and word-final positions by Yoruba-English bilinguals. From the contact and influence of the English language and Yoruba language in an ESL environment, the fundamental thrust of linguistics would be to explicate the influence that one language would have on another. In this case, the focus is on the effects the English has on Yoruba. When these effects are viewed, it is discovered that structural rules are affected. Our findings reveal that vowel epenthesis is not constantly the repair device. Analysis of data shows that consonants are either preserved or deleted which justifies the earlier position of scholars of foreign syllable modifications.
Women in the Leadership and Decision Making Processes of Trade Unions in Nigeria: Issues and Prospects

Abstract: Nigerian women had been active in the socio-economic development of their various societies long before colonisation. Their activities situated primarily within their families and communities. Things have however changed in favour of women participation in wage employment and by extension, in trade union activities. This is because membership of the labour force makes one automatic member of the respective organisation’s trade union. Being an organisation with patriarchal structures and attitudes, this paper examines the involvement of women in the decision making processes of trade unions in Nigeria. A total of six hundred and forty (640) women in wage employment were chosen for this study through a multi-stage random sampling technique across five industrial unions in the country. Data were generated using the qualitative method wherein copies of a questionnaire were administered on the respondents. This was complemented by in-depth interview sessions with fifteen other female workers. Relevant literatures were reviewed and the study is situated in the pluralist perspective. Findings revealed that while women now play active roles in trade union activities, they are less involved in the decision making processes of their respective trade unions due to inhibiting cultural attitudes and structures. Ameliorative steps that could enhance women greater involvement in the policy-making processes of these trade unions are put forward.
Instances of Quranic Analysis Using Arabic Linguistic Textual Standards

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to highlight some instances of the Quranic Analysis in reference to the modern rules of linguistic textual standards and study the practical indications of the cohesive devices in the analysis of Quranic Arabic texts. Using the descriptive and analytical methods, the research treats the segments of the devices which are reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion as they are all traceable in the classical Arabic works and the interpretations made on the Quranic Arabic Texts. The paper elaborates on the textual analysis in the language of the Glorious Qur’an in terms of its roles in the deduction of Islamic legal rulings. Likewise, it treats the points of similarities and differences between the various Arabic linguistic analyses which constitute Traditional and Modern methods of textual structuring as related to the Qur’an. The study strikes a balance between the two analytical paradigms and widens the scope of understanding the Quranic message in the modern age. It offers insights into the possible Educational development in the learning of Arabic Language for religious purpose. The paper establishes the importance of analytical specimen from such aspects with attention to the rules guiding the interpretation of the Glorious Quran according to the methods and principles of the early scholars of Islamic Sciences. Finally, it concludes with suggestions and recommendations towards the resolution of the challenges faced in the contemporary Arabic Quranic Learning practices.
Effect of Shakeout Time on Microstructure and Hardness Properties of Grey Cast Iron  [PDF]

Abstract: Solidification process of grey cast iron largely determines the resultant carbon precipitates in form of graphite or carbides. Microstructure and hardness properties of grey iron were therefore studied. Aggregate scraps were melted with varying inoculants composition of 0.1 wt%, 0.2 wt% and 0.3 wt%. Cast produced was shaken out of the mould at various timing. Microstructures of the samples were determined and analyzed. Hardness properties were equally evaluated. It was observed that the occurrence of carbides was more with 0.25 hrs shakeout time than other varying timing. Increasing shakeout time was found to decrease hardness and increase the carbide grain size. When the ferrosilicon content increases, there is a gradual decrease in the hardness properties from 59.6 HRC to 53.2 HRC for 0.25 hrs shakeout time cast sample. Similar decreases were observed for various timing analyzed.
Indoor Tanning, Sunbathing, and the Hazard of Skin Cancer: The Effect of the Tan Tax  [PDF]

Abstract: In July2010, a10 percent federal sales tax on indoor tanning, known as the tan tax, went into effect. Applauding the imposition of the new tax, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) foresees that by discouraging indoor tanning, the tan tax will significantly reduce the risk of skin cancer and consequently the future costs of its treatment, currently amounting to $1.8 billion each year. Recognizing, however, that an alternative to indoor tanning may be the riskier practice of sunbathing, the present paper offers a rational-choice model for addressing the individual’s indoor and outdoor tanning decisions, which is applied to examining his or her response to the imposition of a tan tax and the consequent effect on the hazard of developing skin cancer. The paper challenges the AAD’s forecast, identifying conditions under which a tan tax will rather exacerbate the hazard of skin cancer.
Text Wrapping Approach to natural Language Information retrieval using significant Indicator

Abstract: This paper continues the advancement of models proposed for Information Retrieval by understanding that, the Information Retrieval task continues to draw attention as the information repositories increase. Knowing that Natural Language presentation of user’s information need help to reduce the complexity of the search process, we propose the use of a well defined Significant Indicator, which uses the relevance index of terms derived from the position of the text, to perform retrieval. This is achieved by initiating a text wrapping process such that document representation in space could algebraically be measured and assigned appropriate function as similarity ratio for Query and Document. Benchmark tools for Information Retrieval were followed and experiment performed using TREC classified data implemented with TRECEVAL shows better performance against some baseline models. The paper suggests further research in the direction of the Significant Indicator as a method for large search space reduction
Comparison between Auditory and Visual Simple Reaction Times  [PDF]

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to find out whether the simple reaction time was faster for auditory or visual stimulus and the factors responsible for improving the performance of the athlete. Methodology: 14 subjects were as- signed randomly into groups consisting of 2 members. Both the members from each group performed both the visual and auditory tests. The tests were taken from the DirectRT software program from a laptop. The DirectRT software consists of Testlabvisual and Testlabsounds to test the reaction times to visual and auditory stimuli. The 2 members from each group completed both the visual and auditory reaction times, the data was taken and the mean reaction time was calculated excluding the first and last values. Results: The results show that the mean visual reaction time is around 331 milliseconds as compared to the mean auditory reaction time of around 284 milliseconds. Conclusion: This shows that the auditory reaction time is faster than the visual reaction time. And also males have faster reaction times when compared to females for both auditory as well as visual stimuli.
