Abstract: In 1915 E.G. Asplund and S. Lewerentz won the Competition for the Enlargement of the South Cemetery in Stockholm. The long and complex series of events leading to the creation of the cemetery in phases began at that point and continued for the whole period of the two architects’ professional activity. When, in 1921, the cemetery authority entrusted Lewerentz with the task of creating the second of the minor chapels - later called the Chapel of Resurrection - the young architect decided to place a classical temple, built of white stone, at the end of the Way of the Seven Wells, the long straight path cut out of the high, dark mass of forest and coming from the Meditation Grove. Lewerentz envisioned a so-called chapel of passage, meaning that the death is not an end point but rather a gateway toward a new dimension.
Pricing joint claims on an asset and its realized variance under stochastic volatility models
Lorenzo Torricelli
Quantitative Finance , 2012,
Abstract: In a stochastic volatility framework, we find a general pricing equation for the class of payoffs depending on the terminal value of a market asset and its final quadratic variation. This allows a pricing tool for European-style claims paying off at maturity a joint function of the underlying and its realised volatility/variance. We study the solution under different stochastic volatility models, give a formula for the computation of the Delta and Gamma of these claims, and introduce some new interesting payoffs that can be priced through this equation. Numerical results are given and compared to those from plain vanilla derivatives.
Valuation of asset and volatility derivatives using decoupled time-changed Lévy processes
Lorenzo Torricelli
Quantitative Finance , 2012,
Abstract: In this paper we propose a general derivative pricing framework which employs decoupled time-changed (DTC) L\'evy processes to model the underlying asset of contingent claims. A DTC L\'evy process is a generalized time-changed L\'evy process whose continuous and pure jump parts are allowed to follow separate random time scalings; we devise the martingale structure for a DTC L\'evy-driven asset and revisit many popular models which fall under this framework. Postulating different time changes for the underlying L\'evy decomposition allows to introduce asset price models consistent with the assumption of a correlated pair of continuous and jump market activities; we study one illustrative DTC model having this property by assuming that the instantaneous activity rates follow the the so-called Wishart process. The theory developed is applied to the problem of pricing claims depending not only on the price or the volatility of an underlying asset, but also to more sophisticated derivatives that pay-off on the joint performance of these two financial variables, like the target volatility option (TVO). We solve the pricing problem through a Fourier-inversion method; numerical computations validating our technique are provided.
Vértigo en el ni?o

Abstract: vertigo is uncommon in children, but it is usually underecognized and it has not been well referenced in the medical literature until the 1980s. it is defined as a subjective sensation of movement of the body or the surrounding, and it is a symptom that may have multiple causes. this paper reviews the different types of vertigo in children, emphasizing their clinical features that may be useful in establishing the diagnosis. of particular relevance is an accurate clinical history and a complete otologic and neurologic examination. more common causes of pediatric vertigo are otitis media and migraine variants, particularly benign paroxysmal vertigo. an appropriate approach to the child with vertigo begins with the clinical suspicion, based on a detailed clinical history and examination, and specific tests. diagnosis should be followed by adequate symptomatic treatment and management of the underlying specific causes.
Síndrome de Guillain Barré en pediatría
Erazo Torricelli,Ricardo;
Medicina (Buenos Aires) , 2009,
Abstract: this paper reviews the current knowledge about guillain- barré syndrome (gbs). gbs is defined as an acute, areflexic, flaccid paralysis, which is classified into 4 subgroups: acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (aidp), acute motor-sensory axonal neuropathy (amsan), acute motor axonal neuropathy (aman) and miller-fisher syndrome (mfs). aidp is associated in 30-50% of cases with cranial nerve involvement, which is not observed in aman. mfs is characterized by ataxia, ophthalmoplegia and areflexia, but it may also present cranial nerve dysfunction. recent data on the pathology and pathophysiology of gbs emphasize the important role of campylobacter jejuni infection in generating anti-ganglioside antibodies (gm1 in aidp, gq1b in mfs and gd1a in aman), which damage myelin in aidp and mfs and axons in aman. the differential diagnosis must rule out other disorders of the central nervous system (encephalitis, encephalomyelitis, myelitis), myasthenic syndromes, toxic neuropathies induced by heavy meals, drugs, chemical substances or animal toxins, and myopathic conditions, especially acute benign infectious myositis and neuromyopathy of the intensive care unit patient. it is important the treatment with immune globulin, at a total dose of 2 grams per kilogram administered over 48 hours. plasmapheresis can be equally effective. gbs has a good prognosis in children with a total recovery in 85% of cases. rehabilitation is crucial to attain a more rapid and global improvement.
