Abstract: annatto (bixa orellana l.) is a crop of great commercial interest, from whose main product, the seed, is extracted the bixina and norbixina coloring, of great interest in the national and international market. the methodology of the accelerated aging test to achieve the physiological quality of annatto seeds was evaluated. the initial quality of the seeds was obtained through the tests of moisture content, germination, germination first count and seedling emergence in greenhouse. the accelerated aging test was conducted at 41oc during 48, 72 and 96 hours, using the traditional and nacl saturated solution. the research was conducted in a completely randomized design. the saturated salt accelerated aging test was efficient for vigor evaluation of annatto seeds, and the period of 72 hours at 41oc was considered as the most adequate procedure to evaluate seed vigor levels.

Abstract: In this paper, we proposed a method for mapping the suitability of land for intensive anthropogenic use in the Maranhao River Basin, in the state of Goiás, Brazil. We analyzed existing 1:250,000 maps of the local geology, drainage system topography and geomorphological features. We generated new information based on our analysis, including a compilation of basic morphometric data and a map of the slopes in the basin, which we used to construct the geomorphological suitability map of the watershed. Our results indicate that 40% of the study area can support intensive anthropogenic use; the remaining 60% of the basin area is categorized as “fragile” regarding the expansion of intensive land use.

Abstract: Cutaneous mast cell tumor (MCT) shows a variable biological behavior in dogs and may present either as solitary masse that can be treated and cured with surgical removal or as a systemic metastatic and fatal disease. Histological grade, KIT pattern and proliferative index are typically prognostic factors in MCTs. In the present study, we have investigated correlation between clinical data (breed, age, gender, tumour location, tumor size, time before surgery, number of tumours, occurrence of metastasis and recurrence), cellular proliferation (Ki-67, mitotic index), intratumoural microvessel density (IMVD) and apoptotic index with the histological grade and KIT pattern. 28 tumors, from 20 dogs with cutaneous MCT were evaluated. There was association between histological grade, IMVD, tumor ulceration and number of tumors. A significant increase of Ki-67 expression and mitotic index was observed in MCTs with cytoplasmic KIT staining pattern. Patnaik histological grade system was related to mitotic index. Histological grade in canine cutaneous MCT should not be assessed as the only prognostic factor, but associated with KIT pattern, IMDV, cellular proliferation, presence of tumour ulceration, number of tumours, recurrences and metastases.

Abstract: to an accurate colonoscopy procedure it is necessary a satisfactory colonic cleansing. there are many bowel preparation methods for adults, but there is not any ideal method for children. therefore, this study tried to find a standard method for this age that can associate excellent colonic cleansing, less side effects, higher acceptability and affordability, relatives' support. forty-six children were evaluated after they had undergone a video colonoscopy, between 2002 and 2006, at the department of video colonoscopy of hospital universitário de sergipe and at upep. they were placed in the following groups: children until 1 year old (group a), children from the age of 1 to 5(group b), and children over 5 (group c). in the first and second groups, sodium phosphate was administered via rectum, and in the third group the children received oral manitol solution. from the 25 children that used the rectal sodium phosphate, the preparation was excellent in 22 (88%) and good in 1 (4%), although all the parents emphasized a difficult application. from the other 21 children, that used manitol, 17 (80,9%) had an excellent preparation, 1 (4,8%) had good preparation, 2 (9,5%) had a regular preparation and 1 (4,8%) had a very bad preparation, although all the children had vomited and had felt sick after its ingestion, with low acceptation by the children due to the big volume. the cecum was reached in 41 (89%) cases, from which 19 (41,3%) had been examined until the terminal ileum. an indivualized prepare allowed great level of good prepare and low morbidity.
