Abstract: This paper presents a numerical investigation of the axisymmetric, pressure driven motion of single file erythrocyte (i.e., red blood cell) suspensions flowing in capillaries of diameter 8-11 µm. Our study success-fully recreates several important in vivo hemodynamic and hemorheological properties of microscopic blood flow, such as parachute shape of the cells, blunt velocity profile, and the Fahraeus effect, and they have been shown to have strong dependence on cell deformability, hematocrit and vessel size.

Abstract: In this paper, we construct MDS Euclidean self-dual codes which are ex-tended cyclic duadic codes. And we obtain many new MDS Euclidean self-dual codes. We also construct MDS Hermitian self-dual codes from generalized Reed-Solomon codes and constacyclic codes.
Tensions in Learner Support and Tutor Support in Tertiary Web-based English Language Education in China

Abstract: Based on the findings of a national survey conducted in 2004 designed to examine the support systems for both learners and tutors engaged in tertiary-level Web-based English education in mainland China, this paper reports the findings of secondary analysis by identifying the tensions in the current learner and tutor support systems. For learner support, four tensions were analyzed: (1) vigorous institutional learner support efforts versus learner utilization of the provisions; (2) learner qualities development versus academic support; (3) learner technical competence versus learner participation in online services; and (4) the relationship of face-to-face components and online components in learner support system design. For tutor support, four tensions were identified: (1) institutional conceptual understanding versus the actual practices; (2) tutor’s enthusiasm versus tutor’s perception of online education; (3) tutor responsibilities versus tutor commitment, and (4) current tutor support service repertoire versus tutor improvement areas. The paper analyzes possible causes for the tensions and proposes some solutions to address these tensions.

Abstract:

For the purpose of motor fault real-time monitoring, this research developed a nano-silicon ni- tride film based magnetic field (MF) sensor, and applied this sensor in MF detection of two common faults. Through experiment, it turned out that arc discharge and slot discharge occur in motor fault produce MF with certain laws. This result proved the feasibility of the sensor and sensing method in MF analysis, and revealed possibility of a new method in fault detection.

Abstract: Virtual brand community is developed based on network technology and has become the theoretical and academic research focus. Interaction in the virtual brand community has a major impact on customer loyalty. This paper studied the impact mechanism on the impacts of the network interaction in virtual community on customer loyalty. The results revealed that the different dimensions, including the two-way communication, customer participation and cooperation of interaction in virtual brand community, have a significant positive relationship with customer perceived value. Then, customer perceived value positively affected trust and customer loyalty and trust had a significant positive impact on customer loyalty.

Abstract: Amazon and Taobao publish product introduction online for customers’ personal choice and become the successful examples of modern service based on information and communication technologies. However, if they want to achieve a complex service through composing some simple services, the research of service composition platform is still rudi-mental. In order to achieve this goal, a virtualization-based service system development method is proposed. The service elements are described standardized as service component at first. Then the service component is virtualized to be a web service and is deployed on a service platform, which is similar to Amazon. Customers put forward their demands on this platform and the platform will auto-match and dispatch task to the component to build a real-world service system. Finally, an application in ocean logistics service is briefly introduced.
Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Marchiafava-Bignami Disease: A Comparative Study  [PDF]

Abstract: Purpose: Marchiafava-Bignami Disease (MBD) is a rare condition mainly associated with alcoholism, although a few non-alcoholic cases have been reported. We performed a comparative study of demographic and clinical differences between alcoholic and non-alcoholic and assessed whether any treatment can be recommended. Methods: We reviewed 157 reports containing data on 168 subjects with Alcoholic MBD (AMBD) and 23 subjects with Non-Alcoholic MBD (NAMBD). The following data were extracted: demographic characteristics; delay from the onset of symptoms to admission; MRI features; location of the corpus callosum lesions; the presence of Wernicke’s disease; drug treatment (thiamine, other vitamins and steroids); outcome. Results: The subjects with AMBD were more frequently men (84.5% vs 47.8, P = 0.000); the ones with AMBD were frequently reported as suffering from malnutrition (81.3% vs 50%, P = 0.019), whereas the NAMBD was frequently reported as suffering from diabetes mellitus (30.4% vs 7.1%, P = 0.002). The lesions in the NAMBD are often located in the splenium (47.8%), whereas single splenial lesions are seen only in 18.7% of the AMBD. 43.5% (10/23) of the NAMBD was reported to have recovered completely, whereas only 15.4% (24/156) AMBD showed a complete recovery. Conclusions: It is important to diagnose NAMBD in the early stage with MRI and to treat the symptoms with thiamine and/or corticosteroids according to aetiology. We recommend prompt treatment of MBD with parenteral thiamine in subjects associated with malnutrition, anorexia nervosa and prolonged vomiting, and reduction of food intake. Corticosteroids may aid in recovery by reducing oedema in subjects associated with diabetes mellitus.
A Relative Variation-Based Method to Unraveling Gene Regulatory Networks

Abstract: Gene regulatory network (GRN) reconstruction is essential in understanding the functioning and pathology of a biological system. Extensive models and algorithms have been developed to unravel a GRN. The DREAM project aims to clarify both advantages and disadvantages of these methods from an application viewpoint. An interesting yet surprising observation is that compared with complicated methods like those based on nonlinear differential equations, etc., methods based on a simple statistics, such as the so-called -score, usually perform better. A fundamental problem with the -score, however, is that direct and indirect regulations can not be easily distinguished. To overcome this drawback, a relative expression level variation (RELV) based GRN inference algorithm is suggested in this paper, which consists of three major steps. Firstly, on the basis of wild type and single gene knockout/knockdown experimental data, the magnitude of RELV of a gene is estimated. Secondly, probability for the existence of a direct regulation from a perturbed gene to a measured gene is estimated, which is further utilized to estimate whether a gene can be regulated by other genes. Finally, the normalized RELVs are modified to make genes with an estimated zero in-degree have smaller RELVs in magnitude than the other genes, which is used afterwards in queuing possibilities of the existence of direct regulations among genes and therefore leads to an estimate on the GRN topology. This method can in principle avoid the so-called cascade errors under certain situations. Computational results with the Size 100 sub-challenges of DREAM3 and DREAM4 show that, compared with the -score based method, prediction performances can be substantially improved, especially the AUPR specification. Moreover, it can even outperform the best team of both DREAM3 and DREAM4. Furthermore, the high precision of the obtained most reliable predictions shows that the suggested algorithm may be very helpful in guiding biological experiment designs.
Preliminary Study on the Undergraduate Specialty Structure Adjustment of General University in China

Abstract: This article aims at the problem of deviation between the specialty structure of general university and the demand structure of market, and judges the state of employment rate by the single-value and standard deviation(x-S) control chart, then presents a specialty structure adjustment mechanism. The theories and methods of this article provide a quantified tool of undergraduate specialty structure adjustment for universities, and decrease the blindness of adjustment. Apply this mechanism to a certain university’s computer science and technology specialty of Dalian, it achieved satisfying result.
Research on Community Participation in Environmental Management of Ecotourism

Abstract: Ecological environment is the material base of the development of ecotourism. The ecotourism cannot develop well without high quality ecotourism environment. The goal of ecotourism development is to protect ecological environment, which is also the essential characteristic of ecotourism different from other kind of tourism. This paper tries to discuss the community participation in environmental management of ecotourism, aims to improve the awareness of participation and environmental protection among community residents and, to establish the mechanism of community participation in environmental management of ecotourism. In this way, can the community residents be benefit from ecotourism; and at the same time, the communities provide strong motive to protect the resources and environment of ecotourism well.
