Genetic Diversity Analysis of Cotoneaster schantungensis Klotz. Using SRAP Marker  [PDF]

Abstract: In order to detect the genetic relationship of different Cotoneaster schantungensis natural populations, 16 samples were selected for genetic diversity analysis based on SRAP markers. Twelve pairs primers were selected out, 93 bands were amplified, of which 91 bands (97.85%) were polymorphic. At species level, the average value of Nei’s genetic diversity (H) was 0.2213, Shannon’s information index (I) was 0.3596, whereas at population level, they were 0.1955, 0.3121, the percentage of polymorphic loci was 75.27%. The genetic differentiation coefficient in populations (Gst) was 0.0788, gene flow Nm was 5.8467, indicating that there was 7.88% of the variation among populations and 92.12% of the variance within populations and the variation within populations was relatively high. These results indicate that C. schantungensis has high genetic diversity and low differentiation among populations. Although most Cotoneaster species are apomictic, C. schantungensis, however, may be an exception.
Whole Genome Analysis of a Community-Associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus ST59 Isolate from a Case of Human Sepsis and Severe Pneumonia in China

Abstract: We report a case of necrotizing pneumonia in a young patient caused by community acquired-methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) in a teaching hospital in the People’s Republic of China. The patient had a typical clinical presentation and was successfully treated with antibiotics and intravenous immunoglobulin. A CA-MRSA strain, named SA268, was isolated from the blood of the patient. The isolate was susceptible to most antimicrobial agents, except cephalosporins, penicillins, and β-lactamase inhibitor combinations. Multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) assigned SA268 to ST59, a clone widely spread in eastern Asia. The strain was positive for Panton Valentine Leukocidin (PVL)-encoding genes and SCCmec type V. We sequenced the complete genome of the SA268 isolate. The genome of SA268 was almost identical to that of the Taiwanese ST59 CA-MRSA strains M013 and SA957. However, we observed several differences in gene composition, which included differences in the SCCmec element and several lipoprotein genes that were present in the Taiwanese strains but absent from SA268.
Magnesium and the Risk of Cardiovascular Events: A Meta-Analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies

Abstract: Background Prospective studies that have examined the association between dietary magnesium intake and serum magnesium concentrations and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events have reported conflicting findings. We undertook a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between dietary magnesium intake and serum magnesium concentrations and the risk of total CVD events. Methodology/Principal Findings We performed systematic searches on MEDLINE, EMBASE, and OVID up to February 1, 2012 without limits. Categorical, linear, and nonlinear, dose-response, heterogeneity, publication bias, subgroup, and meta-regression analysis were performed. The analysis included 532,979 participants from 19 studies (11 studies on dietary magnesium intake, 6 studies on serum magnesium concentrations, and 2 studies on both) with 19,926 CVD events. The pooled relative risks of total CVD events for the highest vs. lowest category of dietary magnesium intake and serum magnesium concentrations were 0.85 (95% confidence interval 0.78 to 0.92) and 0.77 (0.66 to 0.87), respectively. In linear dose-response analysis, only serum magnesium concentrations ranging from 1.44 to 1.8 mEq/L were significantly associated with total CVD events risk (0.91, 0.85 to 0.97) per 0.1 mEq/L (Pnonlinearity = 0.465). However, significant inverse associations emerged in nonlinear models for dietary magnesium intake (Pnonlinearity = 0.024). The greatest risk reduction occurred when intake increased from 150 to 400 mg/d. There was no evidence of publication bias. Conclusions/Significance There is a statistically significant nonlinear inverse association between dietary magnesium intake and total CVD events risk. Serum magnesium concentrations are linearly and inversely associated with the risk of total CVD events.

Abstract: 甲状腺肿瘤是一种常见疾病,其中良性肿瘤占绝大多数。流行病学研究显示,甲状腺恶性肿瘤发病率逐年提高。随着诊断技术的发展,高质量的影像及病理资料获取已不再困难,高效而准确的判读结果才是提高诊断水平的关键。随着患者数量的增多,甲状腺肿瘤患者的治疗决策及随访管理等均存在着巨大的挑战。机器学习因其具备高效率、较高准确率等特点而成为医学领域的研究热点之一。目前已有研究肯定了其在甲状腺肿瘤诊疗中的作用。正确全面地了解机器学习及其在甲状腺肿瘤诊疗中的作用可以为提高诊断准确性,指导治疗决策和改善患者管理提供新思路。

Abstract: Closed form expressions for the PDF and MGF of the harmonic mean of two independent exponential variates are cited and derived, and then applied to study the performance of cellular multi-node and dual-hop cooperative communication systems with non-regenerative relays over flat Rayleigh fading channels. We derive the probability density function (PDF) and asymptotic symbol error rate (SER) expression with MRC scheme. Then we use Matlab to simulate the performance.
Regional Geochemical Characteristics and Influence Factors of Soil Elements in the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone, China  [PDF]

Abstract: Soil heavy metal pollution is one of the main environmental problems in Pearl River Delta EconomicZone of China. Based on multi-purpose regional geochemical survey, regional eco-geochemical assessment, local eco-geochemical assessment and comprehensive appraisal, the eco-geochemical survey and assessment in Pearl River Delta Economic Zone of 41,698 km2were completed. Samples from soils were collected in accordance with the two-layer grid method. Totally 54 elements and indicators for soils were determined. Compared to deep soils, the sampled surface soils are enriched in OrgC, N, P, Cd, SHg, Ag, B, Au, S and poor with As, Ni, I, Co, Cr, V, MgO, Sc, Al2O3, Fe2O3etc. The characteristics of geochemical reference value of element in soil that inherited soil parent material and regional elements combined features reflected that the elements enriched in the soil was interrelated with acid rock, sandstone and shale. The spatial distribution characteristics of element regional geochemistry were conditional by regional environmental geological conditionsand effected by human activities. Role of Character Strengths and Stress in Psychological Symptoms among Chinese Secondary Vocational School Students  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: Character strengths are important psychology resources, which affect the academic and social development of students at secondary vocational schools. Purpose: We aimed to clarify the relationship between character strengths, psychological stress, and psychological symptoms among these students from a positive psychological perspective. By focusing on virtues and strengths, we suggest improvements to school education and family upbringing. Sample: A total of 282 secondary vocational school students were recruited. Design and Method: Students were asked to complete the Chinese Virtues Questionnaire, Life Stress Rating Scale, and Symptom Checklist-90. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 19.0. Results: Regression analyses indicated that the interaction between relationship strengths and family stress explained 45% of the variance in psychological symptoms. This study clarified the positive role of character strengths in stressful situations. Thus, helping secondary vocational school students recognize and use their strengths is conducive to improving their health. Conclusion: Our results should also help teachers and parents adopt a strengths perspective, which might encourage students to explore and develop their strengths.
Chamaejasmine Induces Apoptosis in Human Lung Adenocarcinoma A549 Cells through a Ros-Mediated Mitochondrial Pathway

Abstract: In the present study, the anticancer activity of chamaejasmine towards A549 human lung adenocarcinoma cells was investigated. In order to explore the underlying mechanism of cell growth inhibition of chamaejasmine, cell cycle distribution, ROS generation, mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm) disruption, and expression of cytochrome c, Bax, Bcl-2, caspase-3, caspase-9 and PARP were measured in A549 cells. Chamaejasmine inhibited the growth of A549 cells in a time and dose-dependent manner. The IC50 value was 7.72 μM after 72 h treatment. Chamaejasmine arrested the cell cycle in the G2/M phase and induced apoptosis via a ROS-mediated mitochondria-dependent pathway. Western blot analysis showed that chamaejasmine inhibited Bcl-2 expression and induced Bax expression to desintegrate the outer mitochondrial membrane and causing cytochrome c release. Mitochondrial cytochrome c release was associated with the activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3 cascade, and active-caspase-3 was involved in PARP cleavage. All of these signal transduction pathways are involved in initiating apoptosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating the cytotoxic activity of chamaejasmine towards A549 in vitro.
Analysis of Urban Change in Shenzhen City Based on Landsat Archived Data  [PDF]

Abstract:
With the ongoing development of economy and urbanization in China, the change of land use types has attracted more and more attention. In this study we focused on the urban development of Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, analyzing Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 8 OLI data. We used an SVM based classification, a land transfer matrix approach, a directional growth analysis method and we calculated the inversion of land surface temperature to derive information of land cover changes that occurred in the time period between 1987 and 2017. The results are combined with Shenzhen’s economy, transportation policy and other aspects to find the driving forces of the urban development. The results show that during the observed 30 years, the area of construction land has increased significantly. Most of it is converted from other lands, and some of them are reclaimed. Most rapidly developing are areas west and northwest of the Bao’an, Nanshan and Longhua. The vegetated areas decreased slightly. Caused by the continuous increase of the construction land, the so-called heat island effect emerges slightly but continuously.
ADVERSARIAL QUESTIONING AND ANSWERING STRATEGIES IN CHINESE GOVERNMENT PRESS CONFERENCES

Abstract: Studying political interviews and press conferences is significant as it may provide a special insight into the change in the policy of a country, and perhaps even the well-being of a society as a whole. Previous studies on broadcast interviews have identified adversarial questioning as an increasing and pervasive style in journalistic practice in the western world (Clayman and Heritage 2002a/b). The use of such adversarial style has emerged in Hong Kong — a metropolitan city deeply influenced by both Chinese and western cultures (Yip 2003). However, the general knowledge of how journalists treat public figures in other parts of the Chinese-speaking world remains relatively unknown. This study attempts to investigate the questioning and answering patterns, in particular adversarial questioning, in Chinese government press conferences which has thus far received little scholarly attention. Drawing on Clayman and Heritage’s coding system for measuring adversarial questioning in U.S. press conferences (2002b), the current study examines the question-answer sequences based on a corpus of ten government press conferences held in mainland China, and aims to present a questioning format by showing any differences in the design of questions by Chinese journalists and their foreign counterparts. The study further explores the format of the response of Chinese officials typical of these events and some possible correlation between government officials’ question-taking and their setting of the political agenda.
