Revista do Instituto Florestal , 2011,
The species Eucalyptus grandis (Hill) Maiden is the most commercial tree cultivated in Brazil and throughout the world. Abstract: maize and sorghum silages are good sources of energy for lactating dairy cows that produce milk destined for fresh and matured cheeses. silages are usually stored in horizontal silos with or without side walls on commercial farms throughout the world. the main microbiological and nutritional quality problems are related to harvesting time, ensiling technology, and management practices during filling and feed-out. aerobic deterioration is a key point that must avoided on farms in order to improve the hygienic, chemical and sensorial quality of milk and cheeses. aerobic deterioration causes large losses of dry matter (dm) and quality, and it can cause health problems for animals and humans through the transfer of pathogens and mycotoxins from feed and livestock to food products. the objectives of the present work were to overview management practices connected to the storage of maize and sorghum in horizontal silos on farms producing milk for make protected designation of origin (pdo) hard ripened cheese, to define good management practices that should be applied as the basis for safe silage production and to reduce the extent of aerobic deterioration.

Abstract: The germination test is routinely used for evaluating physiological quality of seeds, but it has not been satisfactory, since it requires relatively long periods to obtain results. In this sense, there is the possibility to resort to vigor tests, although the absence of standardized methodologies has hindered your applicability and reproducibility. The goal of the present study was to establish a methodology for the tetrazolium test that is effective for evaluating physiological quality in pitaya seeds. So, we used five seed batches obtained from mature fruits of pitaya (Hylocereus undatus), harvested in the years of 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. The experimental design was the completely randomized design, with four replicates of 50 seeds. The tetrazolium test was conducted in a 5 × 4 × 3 factorial plot, corresponding to five batches of pitaya seeds (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012), four concentrations of the tetrazolium solution (0.075%, 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1.0%) and three immersion periods (2, 3, and 4 h). In addition, the germination test for the seed batches was carried out and the analyzed variables were: percentage of germination (PG), germination speed index (GSI) and mean germination time (MGT). Data were submitted to ANOVA and means were compared by the Scott-Knott test (p ≤ 0.05). Tetrazolium test conducted at a solution concentration of 0.5% and an immersion period of 3 h proved to be efficient for evaluating physiological quality of pitaya seeds, in order to stratify the seed batches into more viability levels compared to the germination test.

Revista IDeAS : Interfaces em Desenvolvimento, Agricultura e Sociedade , 2010,
Abstract: This article seeks an understanding of the historic-gegraphical Guaragi (Ponta Grossa – PR) through the analysis of the dialectic between culture and territory. The culture is one way of interpreting the organization of the territory from the symbols, beliefs, experiences, identities and representation created that has the same. The dialectic contributes to the understanding of phenomena in its entirety, viewing it as part of a dynamic reality, which is constantly changing, and a socio-historical process
The influence of climatic parameters in the haematophagic daily activity of Cerqueirellum argentiscutum (Shelley & Luna Dias) (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Amazonas, Brazil
Medeiros, Jansen Fernandes;Py-Daniel, Victor;Izzo, Thiago Junqueira;
Acta Amazonica , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0044-59672006000400019
Abstract: we studied the influence of climatic parameters in the daily haematophagic activity of cerqueirellum argentiscutum from september/1999 to august/2000. the bite activity observed was different according to the annual rain precipitation (dry and rainy seasons). humidity and temperature were the factors that most influenced it in both periods. during the dry season, it was greater in the beginning of the morning, showing a positive association with the humidity. however, during the rainy season, it was negatively related to that same factor. when wind speed was higher than 10 km.h-1, it was reduced abruptly. light intensity, atmospheric pressure and cloudiness seemed to act as secondary factors in the daily abundance of c. argentiscutum.

Abstract: biodosimetry is the evaluation of absorbed dose using bioindicators. among chromosomal aberrations, scoring of dicentrics from peripheral human blood has been used as gold standard for biodosimetry, although in case of large scale incidents its use presents some drawbacks. advances in technology have led to new investigations allowing or permitting the use of new methods which not only improve this "classical" biodosimetry but permits the design of other bioindicators making possible faster analyses, particularly in events where many persons may have been exposed. this report presents an overview of some recent studies developed by the "grupo de estudos em radioprote??o e radioecologia - gerar", nuclear energy department of ufpe - brazil, involving biodosimetry.
Biodosimetry for dose assessment of partial-body exposure: a methodological improvement
Fernandes, Thiago Salazar;Loyd, David C.;Amaral, Ademir;
Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132008000700016
Abstract: this study has explored the possibility of combining culture times with extending the duration for which colcemid is present in cell culture in order to obtain better dose estimations following partial-body exposures. irradiated and unirradiated blood was mixed to simulate a partial-exposure. dicentric frequencies and resultant dose estimations were compared from 48 and 72 h cultures with colcemid added at the beginning, after 24 h or for the final 3 h. the frequencies of dicentrics in first division cells increased with the cell culture time, providing better dose estimations. unwanted excessive contraction of chromosomes caused by prolonged contact with colcemid was measured and ways to avoid this are discussed. it is suggested that the combination of a lower than usual concentration of this drug combined with its earlier addition and longer culture time may provide metaphases better suited for interpreting partial-body exposures.

Abstract: this article discusses how ethnic conflicts negatively affect human rights and how international intervention acts for the defense of these rights. we thus compare the structure by which ethnic conflicts are triggered and an ideal scenario in which the state is capable of guaranteeing human rights, in keeping with the united nations perspective. while identifying the points at which ethnic conflicts breach the foundations of human rights, we analyze a second scenario in which it is impossible to guarantee such rights, raising the issue of humanitarian intervention. finally, we argue that although human rights have gained relevance in the post-cold war period, they do not constitute a cohesive set of objectives. therefore, in order to understand the selectiveness behind humanitarian interventions, we conclude that it is essential to consider other interests.

Abstract: background: distal femoral fracture is one of the possible complications on the post operative period of the acl reconstruction; however, with rare incidence. case report: this study reports a male 34 year-old athlete, five months after acl reconstruction surgery. the case developed normally in accordance with the established protocol. the patient presented good control and sensory-motor stability when he suffered a supracondylar femur fracture. this fracture occurred during a jump in the physical therapy treatment. the ligament reconstruction was done with the tendon graft of the knee flexors muscles, and the fracture caused later, was reduced and stabilized with plate and screw. ten months after open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture, the patient showed regular function in the lysholm scale, normal range of movement and muscular force grade v for knee flexors and extensors. discussion: few case reports similar to the present one were found in the literature. the majority presented femur fracture after acl reconstruction with patellar tendon. the present case shows significance by the association between supracondylar femur fracture with ligament reconstruction with flexors tendon, since only one case followed this direction. two of the possible causes of this fracture are bone fragility for disuse and femoral tunnel bone bigger than the normal, despite not being a consensus. a hypothesis suggested by the authors of this paper is that the bone tunnel of graft fixation could have been a stress booster to the site of the fracture.
