Abstract: The cotton plant is a plant belonging to the family Malvaceae and its leaves are often used in folk medicine. The present study aimed to evaluate the mutagenic or antimutagenic activity of the ethanolic extract of Gossypium barbadense L. (EEG) and to analyze its capacity to prevent or repair mutagenic lesions caused by cyclophosphamide (CP). For the Micronucleus test, Swiss mice were divided into 5 groups: negative control; Positive control: treated with 50 mg/kg cyclophosphamide (CP), group receiving EEG 500 mg/kg for 7 days; Group receiving EEG 500 mg/kg for 7 days associated with CP24h before euthanasia; Group who received CP and EEG 500 mg/kg for 7 days. After the treatment period, the animals were euthanized, the bone marrow removed and the blood smear prepared. From this analysis, it was observed that the EEG caused a significant increase in the number of micronucleated erythrocytes, indicating mutagenic activity of the extract. In addition, it was verified that the extract did not present the capacity to prevent, but it presented the capacity of repair of the chromosomal damages caused by CP.

Abstract: The consumption of beverages and processed foods, mainly soft drinks, has been incorporated into the usual diet of children, adolescents and adults frequently in recent years. The present study aimed to study the effects of carbonated drinks on Wistar rats, based on the macroscopic and histological morphology of the esophagus. Fifteen Wistar rats were divided into three groups: control group; group fed with ration and cola-type refrigerant ad libitum and group fed with ration and gas industrialized water ad libitum, for a trial period of 90 days. For histopathology and morphology, the esophagus was removed, prepared in slides and stained with hematoxylineosin. Images of the sections were captured for analysis and classification of the inflammatory infiltrate. For morphometry, ten grid fields of 100 points were evaluated in the 40x eyepiece, totaling 3000 points per animal. The results demonstrate that the refrigerant treatment induced the following structural changes in the rats: significant reduction of weight in relation to the control group; inflammatory infiltrate predominantly diffuse mild to moderate and tissue edema. The rats treated with carbonated water had similar results to the control, besides signs of healing and tissue repair.

Abstract: objective: to identify predictive variables of iron overload in patients with sickle cell anemia, correlating biochemical and imaging markers. materials and methods: the authors developed a cross-sectional study involving 32 patients with sickle cell anemia who were evaluated for ferritin and iron serum levels and submitted to liver magnetic resonance imaging with one spin-echo and five gradient-echo sequences. the signal intensity was obtained at each sequence, corresponding to the arithmetical mean of the measurements on regions of interest in the liver and paraspinal muscles to obtain the liver/muscle signal intensity ratio (sir). based on such sir, the liver iron concentration (lic) was estimated by means of the following formula: e[5.808 - (0.877 × t2*) - (1.518 × iw)], where t2* is the sir on the sequence with echo time = 13 ms and iw is the sir on the intermediate-weighted sequence. patients were grouped according to their blood transfusion regimen (regular monthly versus sporadic transfusions). results: the comparison between the transfusion groups was based on clinical-laboratory variables, with significant differences in sir, lic and serum ferritin levels: the group with regular transfusions demonstrated greater hepatic iron overload. conclusion: magnetic resonance imaging is an efficient tool for evaluating liver iron overload in patients with sickle cell anemia.

Monogamy Inequality and Residual Entanglement of Three Qubits under Decoherence
Thiago R. de Oliveira
Physics , 2009, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevA.80.022331
Abstract: Exploring an analytical expression for the convex roof of the pure state squared concurrence for rank 2 mixed states the entanglement of a system of three particles under decoherence is studied, using the monogamy inequality for mixed states and the residual entanglement obtained from it. The monogamy inequality is investigated both for the concurrence and the negativity in the case of local independent phase damping channel acting on generalized GHZ states of three particles and the local independent amplitude damping channel acting on generalized W state of three particles. It is shown that the bipartite entanglement between one qubit and the rest has a qualitative similar behavior to the entanglement between individual qubits, and that the residual entanglement in terms of the negativity cannot be a good entanglement measure for mixed states, since it can increase under local decoherence.
Attention Changes and Victimization in a Sample of Adolescents Victims of Domestic Violence  [PDF]

Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2016.43026
Abstract: Objective: To report attention changes in a sample of adolescents victims of domestic violence and discuss how this change may be related to an addictive and complex cycle of victimization and abuse. Methods: 78 adolescents went through psychiatric and neuropsychological evaluation. The Kiddie-Sads-Present and Lifetime Version and the Brazilian version of the Childhood Trauma Questionaire (CTQ) were applied. The neuropsychological assessment was conducted by trained professionals using the Wechsler Children’s Global Assessment Scale, 3rd edition-WlSC III. The sample was divided into 3 groups according to the intensity of the reported maltreatment-obtained by the CTQ score (comparison group, moderate degree of abuse and severe maltreatment). Results: The group that showed moderate maltreatment showed better performance in an attention task compared to the comparison group. At the severe maltreatment group, this difference was not observed. Conclusions: Children and adolescents who are victims of maltreatment are more alert to environmental details that surround them as a form of adaptation to defend themselves against potential threats. However, they could react precipitously with inappropriate behavior in some contexts. This can lead to a favorable environment for new and repeated situations of violence, abuse and a perpetuation of this victimization.

International Journal of Morphology , 2011,
Abstract: In humans, the right coronary artery is dominant. However, we did not find any citations in the literature concerning anatomical indicators of dominance among dogs. We used 30 hearts from mongrels of both sexes, fixed in 10% formalin. The branches of the coronary arteries were dissected with special attention to the levels that were considered to be reference points. In 96.7%, the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery reached or went beyond the crux cordis. The subsinuosus interventricular artery, ended before reaching the apex in 21 cases, at the apex in five cases and after the apex in four cases. The paraconal interventricular artery, ended before reaching the apex in two cases, at the apex in 11 cases and after the apex in 17 cases. The region of the heart apex was irrigated by branches of the left coronary artery, through the paraconal interventricular branch or through both of the interventricular branches. The mean length and number of ventricular branches of the left coronary artery were greater than those of the right coronary artery. The subsinuosus interventricular branch is a branch of the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery. In the hearts of dogs, the left coronary artery is dominant. The dominance pattern in dogs is different from the dominance pattern in human that is mentioned in the specialized literature.
