César Luis Siqueira Junior,Thais de Castro Moraes,Jade Ayres Barbedo Martins,Maria das Gra?as Machado Freire
Perspectivas Online : Biológicas e Saúde , 2011,
Abstract: To evaluate the effect of plant extracts on the growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, ethanolic extractsfrom pitomba seeds, plantain, sword-of-saint-george and maigoya leaves were obtained and incorporated inpotato-dextrose-agar medium (PDA) at concentrations of 1%, 5% and 10% (v/v). Micelial growth wasevaluated in these media. The results demonstrated the inhibitory effect of extracts from plantain andpitomba increase significantly at concentrations above 5% (v/v), causing almost complete inhibition of thefungal growth (90% and 100%, respectively). In contrast, maigoya and sword-of-saint-george extractsshowed small inhibition even at a concentration of 10% (v/v), causing a reduction, in the fungal growth, ofonly 8% and 23%, respectively. The fungitoxic activity detected in the extracts tested in this work show thepotential usage as biopreservers of papaya, preventing contamination and consequent loss of fruits duringpostharvest.

Abstract: this study searched for correlations between body composition (assessed by indirect methods) and respiratory muscle strength, endurance and exercise capacity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd). thirty elderly subjects were divided into two groups of copd patients, in clinically stable condition, and a control group, of subjects with no respiratory disease, selected so as to match copd patients' age and biotype. all subjects were submitted to spirometry, maximal respiratory pressures for assessing respiratory muscle strength, respiratory muscle endurance test, the six minute walking test (tc6'), and to skin folds and body mass index (bim) measurements. subjects (6 women, 24 men) were divided into: group a, with moderate to severe copd, n=11 (aged 69.5±10.5, bim 24.00±3.66 kg/m2); group b with mild copd, n=10 (aged 71.1±8.1, bim 24.41±0.58 kg/m2); and control group c, n=9 (aged 70.1±5.9, bmc 27.44±1.33 kg/m2). significant differences between the groups were found only in body fat percent and distance walked in the tc6'. results showed no significant correlations between the analysed variables. though literature consensually points to the nutritional status as a factor for respiratory impairment in copd patients, no significant correlations could be found between body composition and the analysed respiratory parameters among this study subjects.
Dynamics of Cladocera Community in a Tropical Hypereutrophic Environment (Gar?as Reservoir, S?o Paulo, Brazil)  [PDF]

Journal of Water Resource and Protection (JWARP) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jwarp.2015.75030
Abstract: This study was performed at Garcas Reservoir, a hypereutrophic urban lake within Sao Paulo metropolitan area, Southeast Brazil. This reservoir underwent to a marked limnological change after the harvest of free floating macrophytes, shifting to a hypereutrophic state. Present purposes were to characterize the Cladocera community and verify its association with the water deterioration after the macrophytes removal period as well as to compare it to previous studies, before macrophytes harvesting. Samplings were collected from October 2007 until September 2008 and the results were compared to data obtained during pre-removal period (1997). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed that the highest values for water transparency were associated with the macrophytes pre-removal period while the highest values of electrical conductivity, chlorophyll a and total phosphorus were associated with the macrophytes post-removal period, indicating the degradation of the water quality. During this period, large cladocerans disappeared and the small sized species of Bosmina predominated. Male organisms of this genus were found as well as elevated densities of Bosmina huaroensis, suggesting overcrowding. Furthermore, it was detected a reduction of 82% in the number of species compared to data from 1997. The shifts to the hypereutrophic state led to aggressive alterations in Cladocera community, suggesting a strong stress on populations.
Only Attract Ants? The Versatility of Petiolar Extrafloral Nectaries in Passiflora  [PDF]
Poliana Cardoso-Gustavson, Nathalia L. Andreazza, Alexandra C. H. F. Sawaya, Marilia de Moraes Castro
American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2013.42A059
Abstract:

Passiflora species presents a coevolutive relationship with Heliconiini butterflies, their primary herbivores. The Heliconiini caterpillars are able to detoxify toxic compounds produced by Passiflora, thus morphological defense strategies stand out over chemical innovations. In this framework, we highlight the presence of mimetic structures and extrafloral nectaries (EFN) as morphological strategies. Heliconian butterflies oviposit only on leaves that do not possess previous eggs, so the presence of egg mimics could prevent the oviposition. EFN are glands that offer nectar to territorial and aggressive ants, establishing mutualistic relationships. Here, we present a structural and chemical analysis of petiolar EFN and nectar from Passiflora alata and P. edulis in order to have insights about the implications of these features in deterring heliconian caterpillars. P. alata have one to four stipitate-crateriform EFN while P. edulis possess a pair of convex glands. Butterflies lay their eggs isolatedly or in up to three on leaves of both species. Our morphological results suggest that EFN from P. alata may act as egg mimics. Ontogenetic data suggest that the variation in the number of glands observed in this species is a serial homology,

Laticíferos articulados anastomosados em espécies de Asclepiadeae (Asclepiadoideae, Apocynaceae) e suas implica??es ecológicas
Demarco, Diego;Castro, Marilia de Moraes;
Brazilian Journal of Botany , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-84042008000400015
Abstract: laticifers occur in all members of apocynaceae. they are described as nonarticulated branched by most authors, but articulated laticifers have been reported to some species of this family. the present study aims to describe the laticifer ontogeny, structure, distribution, and type in vegetative organs of fischeria stellata (vell.) e.fourn., gonioanthela axillaris (vell.) fontella & e.a. schwarz, matelea denticulata (vahl) fontella & e.a. schwarz, and oxypetalum banksii schult. and re-evaluate the laticifers of asclepias curassavica l. from atlantic rainforest, comparing the results with those of species from "cerrado" vegetation. the laticifers of these five species are articulated anastomosing, whose transverse or oblique walls dissolve rapidly and entirely. the laticifers branch through lateral anastomoses and form a continuous system throughout the adult plant. they are observed in primary tissues of stem and leaf, except in epidermis; they are also present in the secondary vascular tissue, except in the secondary xylem of a. curassavica. the ontogeny of these laticifers may explain the divergence between our data and those recorded for most species of the family. the results obtained revealed that the ontogeny, type, structure, and distribution of laticifers of the species of asclepiadeae from "restinga", lowland humid forests, and "cerrado" vegetation are similar. the continuity of the articulated anastomosing laticifer system ensures a greater latex flow into the injured organ, releasing the laticifer exsudate simultaneously, coagulating and sealing the wounds rapidly, besides hindering the entrance of microorganisms.
O prazer de Sísifo está no leito de Procusto: a emo??o do prazer nos relatos dos consumidores de fast sex
Castro e Silva, Anderson Moraes de;
Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad (Rio de Janeiro) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-64872010000100004
Abstract: "fast sex" venues, namely sites for prostitution, are places where a masculine ethos is constructed. i studied emotions, especially those related to pleasure, among contumacious clients. this paper is based on qualitative analysis of narratives posted at a virtual community of fast sex consumers, where members score the service provided by girls at several male spas in rio de janeiro. by looking at those reports, called "test drives" by the group under observation, i seek to reflect on the context in which the emotion of pleasure is felt during a "programa" (sex service session), and those when it is described as absent. in both cases, i aim to understand how emotions shaped by prostitute-client interaction can interfere with the achievement of pleasure as the result of a programa.
Experimental Study of Stockpiles of Iron Ore Fines  [PDF]
Evandro Moraes da Gama, Matheus Henrique de Castro, Carlos Gomes, Felipe Abbas da Gama
Geomaterials (GM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/gm.2014.41003
Abstract:

Storage of iron ore pellet feed fines (with 90% minimum granulometry of <45 μm and 100% <150 micron) can be studied through the mechanics of granular materials. Geotechnical inputs are not able to explain the failure phenomenon comprehensively. Yet, in the industry the trend is to work with geotechnical inputs and an exaggerated degree of visual interpretation. The first part of this article briefly shows some articles in which authors emphasize the mechanics of granular materials and an article placing emphasis on the geotechnical features of granular materials. The second part shows the solution to the equation developed by [1] applied to the geometry of iron ore storage piles. The scale model study of stress variation on the model’s axis is done and the comparison of the stress variation and Thamwattana’s analytical resolution is commented. The third part shows a stress distribution study formulating centered finite differences by applying the Itasca Consulting Group’s PFC2D software to the iron ore stockpile within the same footprint as the stockpile in the analytical model. This study’s conclusions are as follows: 1) The differential between the models is the differences between tangential and normal rigidity. These differences between tangential rigidity Kt and normal rigidity Kn make the stockpile unstable. We can state that when Kn = Kt the stockpiles are more stable. 2) The models and all the work done show that the stockpiles are not stable. The stockpiles are at times temporarily stable, but even after formation, these stockpiles are unstable and the particles are always moving.

Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302009000500009
Abstract: the tight glycemic control can prevent and/or delay the development of chronic complications of diabetes mellitus (dm). dietary carbohydrates are the main determinant of postprandial blood glucose and glycemic index (gi) and glycemic load are used to predict blood glucose response to foods. the aim of this paper was to critically review the role of low gi diets in type 2 diabetes mellitus (t2dm) prevention and metabolic control. the risk for development of t2dm with high gi diets ranged from 1.21 to 1.59.the reduction from 12-32 units in the gi of diets decreased 0.39-0.50% in hba1c values. however, the effects of these diets on lipid profile and body weight in patients with t2dm remain controversial. in conclusion, the current evidence indicates that the inclusion of gi in the dietary planning for patients with t2dm contributes to the improvement of glycemic control.

Per Musi , 2013, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-75992013000100007
Abstract: this article deals with the modeling of the compositional system used by the brazilian composer camargo guarnieri (1907-1993) for the creation of the ponteio no12 , from the second book of his series for piano called ponteios. this modeling was accomplished through a detailed observation of the behavior of several musical parameters used in this work by the composer. based on quantitative and qualitative observations of how the various structural units of this piece interrelate, progress, and change in the course of musical time, it was proposed a compositional system that was used in a second phase, for the compositional planning of pedro miguel's ponteio no 2, for piano.
