Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2016.411002
Abstract:
Countries and regions around the world face a number of economic, environmental and social challenges. Increased demand for energy, primary resources (agricultural, forestry and fishing), industrial products and services (healthcare in particular) put significant pressure on the sustainability of the ecosystems that support our society. One option to provide a more sustainable base for the economy would be the transition towards bioeconomy in which the importance of biotechnology and biomass- based production to generate economic output is significantly greater than today. Bioeconomy is considered to encompass all economic activity connected with the utilization of renewable biological resources. The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the importance of bioeconomy in the management of natural resources in the 21st century, providing many answers to resolve the previous challenges together with environmental preservation. The concept has gained scientific and political attention during the recent years, especially in Europe but also globally. From the review and analysis of the literature, this paper addresses the emerging bioeconomy, definitions and conceptual bases, and its great potential in different sectors of economic activity and development of new products. Special emphasis is placed on the case of the European Union. We present the concerns of European authorities at this level and best practices already in force in two Nordic countries that can be regarded as the beginning of a general transition to bioeconomy.

Revista de Saúde Pública , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89102012005000022
Abstract: objective: to review the use of accelerometry as an objective measure of physical activity in adults and elderly people. methods: a systematic review of studies on the use of accelerometty as an objective measure to assess physical activity in adults were examined in pubmed central, web of knowledge, ebsco and medline databases from march 29 to april 15, 2010. the following keywords were used: "accelerometry," "accelerometer," "physical activity," "pa," "patterns," "levels," "adults," "older adults," and "elderly," either alone or in combination using "and" or "or." the reference lists of the articles retrieved were examined to capture any other potentially relevant article. of 899 studies initially identified, only 18 were fully reviewed, and their outcome measures abstracted and analyzed. results: eleven studies were conducted in north america (united states), five in europe, one in africa (cameroon) and one in australia. very few enrolled older people, and only one study reported the season or time of year when data was collected. the articles selected had different methods, analyses, and results, which prevented comparison between studies. conclusions: there is a need to standardize study methods for data reporting to allow comparisons of results across studies and monitor changes in populations. these data can help design more adequate strategies for monitoring and promotion of physical activity.
Tuberculose miliar e febre Q em doente imunocompetente

Revista Portuguesa de Pneumologia , 2009,
Abstract: miliary tuberculosis is a progressive disease resulting from the massive hematogeneous dissemination of mycobacterium tuberculosis. immunocompromised and elderly patients are the most affected. a case of an immunocompetent 45 year old man, with miliary tuberculosis and a simultaneous infection by coxiella burnetti is presented. the clinical presentation demands a high awareness for the presence of tuberculosis. the rarity of this association, only one case reported in literature, appears to be a fortuity coincidence.

Brazilian Journal of Botany , 1998,
Grapevine Aquaporins: Gating of a Tonoplast Intrinsic Protein (TIP2;1) by Cytosolic pH

PLOS ONE , 2012, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0033219
Abstract: Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is one of the oldest and most important perennial crops being considered as a fruit ligneous tree model system in which the water status appears crucial for high fruit and wine quality, controlling productivity and alcohol level. V. vinifera genome contains 28 genes coding for aquaporins, which acting in a concerted and regulated manner appear relevant for plant withstanding extremely unfavorable drought conditions essential for the quality of berries and wine. Several Vv aquaporins have been reported to be expressed in roots, shoots, berries and leaves with clear cultivar differences in their expression level, making their in vivo biochemical characterization a difficult task. In this work V. vinifera cv. Touriga nacional VvTnPIP1;1, VvTnPIP2;2 and VvTnTIP2;1 were expressed in yeast and water transport activity was characterized in intact cells of the transformants. The three aquaporins were localized in the yeast plasma membrane but only VvTnTIP2;1 expression enhanced the water permeability with a concomitant decrease of the activation energy of water transport. Acidification of yeast cytosol resulted in loss of VvTnTIP2;1 activity. Sequence analysis revealed the presence of a His131 residue, unusual in TIPs. By site directed mutagenesis, replacement of this residue by aspartic acid or alanine resulted in loss of pHin dependence while replacement by lysine resulted in total loss of activity. In addition to characterization of VvTn aquaporins, these results shed light on the gating of a specific tonoplast aquaporin by cytosolic pH.
