This paper presents the preliminary results of a broader research on performance and self-perception in reading and writing of university students. In particular, it focuses on verbal comprehension given its connection with reading comprehension. Reading comprehension is crucial, especially while constructing a situational model -achieved by integrating the information provided in the text with relevant prior knowledge. A random pilot sample of 60 students from third year, male and female, of an average age of 23 was selected. The Vocabulary, Information and Analogies tests from WAIS III were administered. The Verbal Comprehension findings show central tendency scores similar to those of the standardization sample with minor dispersion, with specific cases of scores in the lower average limit. Several comments are given on the performance of university students and other observations regarding the type of mistakes made in the answers provided which deserve further considerations. Preliminary conclusions point to a lack of and/or insufficient information, conceptual confusion with some terms of relatively high freq

Orientaci?3n y sociedad , 2006,
Abstract: this paper sets out to report on findings about features of task-specific reformulation observed in university students in the middle stretch of the psychology degree course (n=58) and in a reference group of students from the degree courses in modern languages, spanish and library studies (n=33) from the national university of la plata (argentina). three types of reformulation were modeled: summary reformulation, comprehensive and productive reformulation.the study was based on a corpus of 621 reformulations rendered from different kinds of text. the versions obtained were categorised according to the following criteria: presence or absence of normative, morphosyntactic and semantic difficulties. findings show that problems arise particularly with paraphrase and summary writing. observation showed difficulties concerning punctuation, text cohesion and coherence , and semantic distortion or omission as regards extracting and/or substituting gist, with limited lexical resources and confusion as to suitability of style/register in writing. the findings in this study match those of earlier, more comprehensive research on the issue and report on problems experienced by a significant number of university students when interacting with both academic texts and others of a general nature. moreover, they led to questions, on the one hand, as to the nature of such difficulties, which appear to be production-related problems and indirectly account for inadequate text comprehension, and on the other hand, as to the features of university tuition when it comes to text handling.

The study of the landscape: from a holistic approach to a social concept of knowledges
Federica Badiali,Sandra Piacente
Annals of Geophysics , 2012, DOI: 10.4401/ag-5539
Abstract: Three examples of the study and enhancement of the landscape in Italy are presented. The interdisciplinary approach to this topic is carried out not simply by juxtaposing disciplines, but by the integration of different ambits. In this way, disjunctive thought is substituted by a holistic approach that produces communication more appropriate to research. This offers the scientists a tool that is of paramount importance for their studies, and for ordinary citizens, a new way of considering the landscape. Example 1: Sustainable tourism and man–landscape relationships: Ecomuseum, Castello di Serravalle (Bologna). By studying the landscape of a hilly wine-producing area, it has been possible to observe the signs of reciprocal man–environment interactions that have characterized the area for over two millennia. For this reason, an Ecomuseum was founded, to provide an efficient tool for the enhancement of sustainable tourism, and also to popularize knowledge of local cultural heritage among the citizens. Example 2: Lago Bracciano near Montese (Modena): re-assessment of an Apennine area combining archeology, landscape and history. The landscape of areas containing historical settlements of local populations was reconstructed. This started with archeological and documentary data that had not yet been correlated, which was integrated with geological and geochemical data. In this way, a marginal tourism area has been improved by appraisal of its intrinsic cultural and historical values. Example 3: Geological elements and poetic trails in Frignano Park. This geological–literary itinerary starts from the assumption that there is a specific poetic and cultural value to the Modena Apennines that is linked to the morphological and geological features of this territory. Geology and literature become an accompaniment to a new pilgrimage of knowledge.
GEOMORPHOSITES AND GEOTOURISM
Mario Panizza,Sandra Piacente
Revista Geográfica Acadêmica , 2008,
Abstract: With reference to the definition of Cultural Geomorphology, a Geomorphosite is defined as a landformwith particular and significant geomorphological attributions, which qualify it as a component of a territory’scultural heritage. This definition is illustrated with some examples. Concerning geotourism, some activitiesof the Italian association “Geologia e Turismo” are presented.
Pinning and depinning of a classic quasi-one-dimensional Wigner crystal in the presence of a constriction
G. Piacente,F. M. Peeters
Physics , 2005, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.72.205208
Abstract: We studied the dynamics of a quasi-one-dimensional chain-like system of charged particles at low temperature, interacting through a screened Coulomb potential in the presence of a local constriction. The response of the system when an external electric field is applied was investigated. We performed Langevin molecular dynamics simulations for different values of the driving force and for different temperatures. We found that the friction together with the constriction pins the particles up to a critical value of the driving force. The system can depin \emph{elastically} or \emph{quasi-elastically} depending on the strength of the constriction. The elastic (quasi-elastic) depinning is characterized by a critical exponent $\beta\sim0.66$ ($\beta\sim0.95$). The dc conductivity is zero in the pinned regime, it has non-ohmic characteristics after the activation of the motion and then it is constant. Furthermore, the dependence of the conductivity with temperature and strength of the constriction was investigated in detail. We found interesting differences between the single and the multi-chain regimes as the temperature is increased.
Phonon-induced electron relaxation in quantum rings
G. Piacente,G. Q. Hai
Physics , 2007,
Abstract: We study electron-acoustic phonon scattering and electron relaxation in quantum rings in the absence and in the presence of external magnetic fields. Electron-phonon interaction is accounted for both the deformation potential and piezoelectric coupling. At zero magnetic field and small ring radius, the deformation potential phonon scattering is orders of magnitude larger than the piezoelectric one. However, the piezoelectric coupling is found to become important when the ring radius and magnetic field increase. It can be the dominant scattering mechanism at large ring radii and/or large magnetic fields. In comparison with the quantum dot case, the acoustic phonon scattering is stronger in quantum rings.
Electron-acoustic-phonon scattering and electron relaxation in two-coupled quantum rings
G. Piacente,G. Q. Hai
Physics , 2007, DOI: 10.1063/1.2748715
Abstract: Electron relaxation, induced by acoustic phonons, is studied for coupled quantum rings in the presence of external fields, both electric and magnetic. We address the problem of a single electron in vertically coupled GaAs quantum rings. Electron-phonon interaction is accounted for both deformation potential and piezoelectric field coupling mechanisms. Depending on the external fields, the ring radii and the separation between the rings, we show that the two different couplings have different weights and importance. Significant oscillations are found in the scattering rates from electron excited states to the ground state, as a function of either the geometry of the system or the external fields.
Anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects of yucca schidigera: A review
PR Cheeke, S Piacente, W Oleszek
Journal of Inflammation , 2006, DOI: 10.1186/1476-9255-3-6
Abstract: Yucca schidigera is an herbaceous plant of the lily family, native to the deserts of the south-western United States and northern Mexico. This plant was used in traditional medicine by Native Americans to treat a variety of ailments including arthritis. Yucca products are currently used in a number of applications. Yucca powder and yucca extract are used as animal feed additives, as discussed in detail by Cheeke and Otero [1]. Beneficial effects in livestock and poultry production include: increased growth rate and improved feed conversion efficiency, reduction in atmospheric ammonia in confinement animal and poultry facilities, anti-protozoal and nematocidal activity, modification of ruminal microbe populations, inhibition of Gram-positive bacteria, reductions in stillbirths in swine, reduction in egg and tissue cholesterol contents, and anti-arthritic activity in horses and dogs. Other applications include the use of yucca extract as a foaming agent in beverages, and use in crop production as nematode and fungi-control agents, as a soil wetting agent, and crop growth stimulant. Yucca products have GRAS status, so are FDA-approved for use in humans.Yucca contains a number of phytochemicals which contribute to these effects. The best known are the steroidal saponins. Saponins are natural detergents [2] that form stable foams. Saponins contain a lipophilic nucleus (the sapogenin) and one or more side chains of hydrophilic carbohydrate (Fig. 1). Thus the intact saponin molecule is a surfactant, with both fat-soluble and water-soluble moities. It has been known for many years [3] that saponins form insoluble complexes with cholesterol. The hydrophobic portion of the saponin (the aglycone or sapongenin) associates (lipophilic bonding) with the hydrophobic sterol nucleus of cholesterol in a stacked micellar aggregation [4].Interactions of saponins with cholesterol and other sterols account for many of their biological effects, particularly those involving membrane activi
