Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0037-86822007000300014
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate platelet activation through p-selectin, and pdgf-ab and tgfb1 content, in schistosomiasis patients who developed fibrosis (f3) and who did not present this (f0), and in a control group (c). the results showed that the percentage of p-selectin in platelets without agonist stimulation was 10.6% in f3, 11.1% in f0 and 6.3% in c. after the addition of adp/adrenaline, the percentages were 44%, 25.3% and 42%, respectively. the pdgf-ab and tgfb1 contents per platelet were 11,016ng/dl (f3), 3,172ng/dl (f0) and 5.01ng/dl (c) and 0,012ng/dl (f3), 5.27ng/dl (f0) and 4.66ng/dl (c), respectively. concerning the p-selectin, we can conclude that platelets from patients with schistosomiasis continued to be responsive to agonists, despite being pre-activated. there were no differences in tgfb1 between the groups, but the pdgf-ab content was significantly higher in f3. this suggests that pdgf-ab may have some participation in the development of fibrosis.

Marin, Sergio Lucio David;Pereira, Messias Gonzaga;Amaral Júnior, Antonio Teixeira do;Martelleto, Luiz Aurélio Peres;Ide, Carlos David;
Scientia Agricola , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-90162006000600005
Abstract: the dependence of brazil on imported improved papaya seeds was the main motivation for this research that primarily intended to evaluate the combining ability of eight genotypes from the 'solo' group, crossed with eight genotypes from the 'formosa' group following a partial diallel scheme. the traits mean fruit weight, brix degree and flavor revealed prevalence of additive effects in both genetic groups, while plant height was preponderantly additive only for the 'solo' genotypes. on the other hand, the yield trait expressed additive superiority for the 'formosa' genotypes. for intrapopulation breeding for higher yield, the indicated genotypes are 'maradol' and 'cariflora' from the 'formosa' group as well 'sunrise solo 783' and 'sunrise solo tj' from the 'solo' group; but, when the objective is to breed for better fruit quality, the genotypes 'js 12' and 'js 11' ('formosa' group), and 'sunrise solo72/12' and 'baixinho de santa amália' ('solo' group) are indicated. based on the set of evaluated traits, the best hybrid combinations were 'sunrise solo 72/12 × js 12', 'sunrise solo tj × js 12', 'baixinho de santa amália × js 12', 'sunrise solo tj x js 11' and 'sunrise solo 72/12 × costa rica'.

Abstract: the clinic and pathological findings and laboratorial testing of puppies with postmortem diagnosis of canine herpesvirus infection are described. the cases occurred in two households of porto alegre, rs, in april 2007 and july 2008. the puppies presented anorexia, depression, cry and dyspnea, followed by death about 24-72 hours after the onset of clinical signs. at necropsy multifocal pin point hemorrhages were observed in the kidneys. the liver was enlarged with petechiae and white foci on the surface. the lungs were red and did not collapse. the spleen was enlarged and, in some cases, with petechiae on the capsular surface. mesenteric lymph nodes and thymus were enlarged. microscopic lesions included hemorrhages and multifocal necrosis of the renal tubular epithelial cells, hepatocytes and lymphoid tissues. in the lungs there was severe multifocal alveolar necrosis with abundant fibrin deposits and a mixed inflammatory infiltrate of variable intensity. intranuclear inclusion bodies were identified in the periphery of necrotic areas in hepatocytes, renal tubular epithelial cells and alveolar cells. samples of liver, kidney and lung were positive in the direct immunofluorescence test for canine herpes virus type 1 (chv-1). the diagnosis was based on epidemiological data, necropsy findings, histological lesions and positive immunofluorescence results using chv-1 antibody in tissue samples. to our knowledge, this is the first report of the identification of chv-1 in brazil, although previous clinic and pathological findings already suggested the presence of the virus in brazilian canine population.

Background: Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder with a complex genetic factor determining its disease onset. Nevertheless, it is not clear in this mental disorder. Objective: To conduct a systematic review of articles regarding the genetic markers and mutations in schizophrenia. Methods: A systematic review of articles on genetic markers and mutations in schizophrenia, published from January 1, 2011, to September 7, 2015, on SCOPUS database was carried out. Search terms were “Genetic markers”, “Mutation”, and “Schizophrenia”. Results: Of the 527 retrieved studies, 31 met the eligibility criteria. Genetic polymorphism, Immune-associated genes, TCF4 and ZNF804A association with microRNA, Neuregulin gene, Chromosome 13q32 and 11p15.4, genes involved in glutamatergic via schizophrenia and brain structure, appeared to be associated with the origin of schizophrenia. Conclusion: Some studies show genes involved in several pathways leading to the disease pathogenesis such as that one related with the dopaminergic and immune system, or rare alleles. Some genes present no involvement in the etiology of this mental disorder. These findings clarify the genetic complexity of schizophrenia and affirm that together, the genes have an overall effect greater than the sum of the individual effect of each gene.

Abstract: purpose: to evaluate the biopsychosocial profile of patients with anophthalmia, with emphasis on the psychological and functional impact of eye loss and the social reintegration of this population. methods: prospective analyses of 84 patients (50 males and 34 females), rehabilitated or in the rehabilitation process with ocular prostheses were interviewed by means of a questionnaire with dimensions involving the etiology of the ocular defect, degree of adaptation to the ocular prosthesis, and impact on professional, family and social activities. result: the right eye was affected in 45.2% of the patients, the left eye in 51.2%, and the rest of the patients had bilateral anophthalmia. difficulty in adapting to monocular vision was reported by 47.6% of the patients. the main causes of anophthalmia in males were eye injuries due to accidents (54%), and, in females, acquired diseases (38.2%). for the total studied population, the eye loss occurred at a mean of 20.5 ± 18.41 years, and the elapsed time until the first rehabilitation with ocular prosthesis was of 8.6 ± 13.10 years. most patients (66.1%) reported satisfaction and good adaptation to the prosthesis. feelings of sadness, shame and shyness were frequently reported. conclusion: anophtalmic patients often exhibit psychic and/or functional disorders which hinder their social, professional and family readaptation, and this is aggravated by both economic factors and lack of public services that provide rehabilitative treatment. public information campaigns could also be useful to prevent causes that lead to ocular loss.

Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Ciências Humanas , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1981-81222007000300006
Abstract: this paper presents reflections which have not been modified during the years, and relate to the causes and consequences of the actions of the social movements and the people that are involved in them who try to create alternatives of surviving for farmers, fishermen, etc. the methodology used in the analysis was the participant observation, and the use of interviews made among leaders of the community, fishermen of marudá and leaders of the movimento nacional dos pescadores (monape) and of the conselho pastoral da pesca (cpp). the aim here is to show theoretical perspectives for the understanding of the social movements involving the fishermen in the northeast of pará and to be a way of attracting the attention of the government, ongs, social movements and all organizations related to the fishing, in order to to promote and guarantee a social and political organization whose objective is not only financial but also directed to the political consciousness of the fishermen, throughout forums of discussions so they may claim for their social demands in the global context of necessity, conflict and violence andindividual rights.
Sequence similarity between the viral cp gene and the transgene in transgenic papayas
Souza Júnior, Manoel Teixeira;Gonsalves, Dennis;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2005000500009
Abstract: the papaya ringspot virus (prsv) coat protein transgene present in 'rainbow' and 'sunup' papayas disclose high sequence similarity (>89%) to the cp gene from prsv br and th. despite this, both isolates are able to break down the resistance in 'rainbow', while only the latter is able to do so in 'sunup'. the objective of this work was to evaluate the degree of sequence similarity between the cp gene in the challenge isolate and the cp transgene in transgenic papayas resistant to prsv. the production of a hybrid virus containing the genome backbone of prsv ha up to the apa i site in the nib gene, and downstream from there, the sequence of prsv th was undertaken. this hybrid virus, prsv ha/th, was obtained and used to challenge 'rainbow', 'sunup', and an r2 population derived from line 63-1, all resistant to prsv ha. prsv ha/th broke down the resistance in both papaya varieties and in the 63-1 population, demonstrating that sequence similarity is a major factor in the mechanism of resistance used by transgenic papayas expressing the cp gene. a comparative analysis of the cp gene present in line 55-1 and 63-1-derived transgenic plants and in prsv ha, br, and th was also performed.
