Abstract: oral health is an important dimension of overall health that has relevant consequences for quality of life. oral diseases and disorders are considered public health problems, because they impact significantly on the individuals and on the community, they present high prevalence and can be effectively prevented and controlled by programs and actions involving individuals, health professionals and the community. in several countries, dental caries levels are declining, and occlusion disorders are considered emerging problems. notwithstanding this observation, deprived segments of population remain being affected by high levels of dental disorders. data on oral health for rural population are scarce, which hinders the planning of strategies and programs aimed at the control of these conditions in rural settings.

Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232006000100015
Abstract: to document levels of dental disease in brazil, and to appraise contextual and individual determinants of caries experience, we studied the dental status of 26,641 five-year-old schoolchildren, as informed by a country-wide survey of oral health comprising 250 towns and performed in 2002-3. the prevalence of untreated caries was associated with socio-demographic characteristics of examined children (gender, ethnic group, localisation and type of school), and geographic conditions of participating towns (human development index, and differential levels of access to fluoridated tap water), in a multilevel assessment. better-off brazilian regions presented an improved profile of dental health. black children and those studying in rural areas and public schools presented significantly higher odds of having untreated caries. at the town level, dental caries was associated with the fluoride status of tap water, the proportion of households linked to the water network, and with the human development index. dental caries experience is prone to socio-demographic and geographic inequalities; the monitoring of contrasts in dental outcomes is relevant for programming socially appropriate interventions aimed at improving oral health by targeting groups of population presenting higher levels of needs.

Mello,Tatiana Ribeiro de Campos; Antunes,Jose Leopoldo Ferreira; Waldman,Eliseu Alves;
Revista Panamericana de Salud Pública , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1020-49892008000200002
Abstract: objectives: to describe the prevalence of dental caries in children with deciduous teeth in urban and rural areas in the state of s?o paulo, brazil, and to identify associated factors. methods: the study included 24 744 children (5-7 years of age) examined as part of an epidemiological survey on oral health carried out in the state of s?o paulo (levantamento epidemiológico de saúde bucal do estado de s?o paulo). multilevel analysis was used to investigate whether the prevalence of untreated caries was associated with the sociodemographic characteristics of the children examined or with the socioeconomic aspects of the participating cities. results: being black or brown (adjusted odds ratio (or) = 1.27), attending school in rural areas (adjusted or = 1.88), and attending public school (adjusted or = 3.41) were identified as determinants for an increased probability of presenting deciduous teeth with untreated caries. being a female (adjusted or = 0.83) was identified as a protective factor. the negative coefficients obtained for second-level independent variables indicate that the oral health profile of the cities included in the study were positively impacted by a higher municipal human development index (b = -0.47) and fluoridated drinking water (b = -0.32). conclusions: the prevalence of untreated caries is influenced by individual and sociodemographic factors. the present study provides epidemiological information concerning the rural areas in the state of s?o paulo. this information is useful for strategic planning and for establishing guidelines for oral health actions in local health systems, thereby contributing to oral health equity.

Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Fonoaudiologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-80342009000200021
Abstract: this research had the aim to identify adaptations on the stomatognathic system of individuals with maxillomandibular disproportions. the literature review was carried out using national and international databases, addressing adaptations on the stomatognathic system of subjects with maxillomandibular disproportions submitted to orthognathic surgery associated to speech-language intervention. it was found that subjects with prognathism and retrognathism present adaptations in all oral-motor functions during the presurgical period. in mandibular prognathism, the most adapted function is mastication, which is characterized by vertical movements using the dorsum of the tongue for kneading the food, and less use of the masticatory muscles. in mandibular retrognathism, studies showed that deglutition is most adapted, being characterized by anterior mandibular slide, in addition to postero-anterior movement of the tongue and perioral muscles activation. after orthognathic surgery, some cases may present adequacy of the stomatognathic system functions. in other, however, adaptations may persist, making it necessary that speech-language therapists are well informed about pre-existent adaptations, in order to plan the best rehabilitation process for each case.

Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692010000600012
Abstract: this qualitative study was carried out between april and august 2007. it analyzed the use of portfolios in the academic community. a total of nine full-time professors and 119 students enrolled in their third semester were interviewed through a semi-structured interview. content analysis was used to analyze data. learning evaluations are seen as a verification of knowledge and efficacy of pedagogical method, and also as an incentive to study. evaluations are procedural, that is, evaluation is continuous, or one-time, e.g. semester end tests. the portfolio is defined as a gradual and continuous evaluation tool. the faculty members and students need to accept the use of portfolios and evaluate the possibilities of this resource. this study is a first attempt to appraise the evaluation process of an undergraduate program, and the use of portfolios and other strategies needs to be consolidated in order to improve the educational process in undergraduate nursing programs.

Interface - Comunica??o, Saúde, Educa??o , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-32832009000100003
Abstract: the aim here was to contribute towards understanding the role of anonymity in the therapeutic model developed by the alcoholics anonymous (aa) fellowship for caring for the "disease of alcoholism". a bibliographic search was conducted in the literature produced by aa on alcohol and alcoholism. a qualitative investigation was also carried out among aa groups located on the outskirts of the city of s?o paulo, brazil. interviews were held and several activities undertaken by its members were observed. aa's therapeutic model is conceived as a system in which symbolic reality is fundamental for representing alcoholism as a "chronic and fatal disease" and consequently for constructing the identity of "individuals with alcohol sickness". in fact, anonymity works as a fundamental symbolic mechanism in the healthdisease process experienced within aa. it links directly to constructing the identity of "individuals with alcohol sickness undergoing recovery" and consequently to subjectively reconstructing the fellowship's members.
