Abstract: Recently, studies aiming to preparation of nanomaterials for application in high technology areas are very advanced in developed countries. Liquid crystals have a vast application and for that; many researches are focused on the development of these special molecules. Polyarylacetylenes are polymers that can hold helicity if polymerization of the monomer occurs in the presence of appropriate metal catalysts. The aiming of this work is to prepare side-chain crystal-liquid helicoidal chiral polymers. These systems show a molecular structure in which the mesogenic unity (pendant) is sided-attached to the polymeric chain. If a chiral substituent is incorporated to the monomer, it will induct chirality of the polymer. Glycerol [1] and cardanol [2], obtained from renewable source, were formally coupled to form the epoxide 1 that in turn was treated with 4-ethylanyline in CHCl3 at 120 oC in a sealed tube in the presence of pyridine, furnishing monomer 2 (40%). The next step it will be the enzymatic resolution of the alcohol 2 in order to achieve optical pure 2. Sequentially, from monomer 2, it is going to be synthesized the targeted stereoregular cis-trans polymer following known procedures, using [Rh(nbd)Cl]2 (nbd=2,5-norbornadiene) as the catalyst [4].

Abstract: essential blepharospasm is a focal distonia characterized by involuntary, spasmodic, bilateral contractions of eyelid protractors. this is a rare disease, which diagnosis is frequently late and symptoms may progress until functional blindness. in this article, we perform a review and describe the most important features of the disease, including historical aspects, epidemiology, etiology, clinical findings, differential diagnosis and treatment.
The real zeros of a random algebraic polynomial with dependent coefficients
Jeffrey Matayoshi
Mathematics , 2009,
Abstract: Mark Kac gave one of the first results analyzing random polynomial zeros. He considered the case of independent standard normal coefficients and was able to show that the expected number of real zeros for a degree n polynomial is on the order of (2/pi)log(n), as n goes to infinity. Several years later, Sambandham considered two cases with some dependence assumed among the coefficients. The first case looked at coefficients with an exponentially decaying covariance function, while the second assumed a constant covariance. He showed that the expectation of the number of real zeros for an exponentially decaying covariance matches the independent case, while having a constant covariance reduces the expected number of zeros in half. In this paper we will apply techniques similar to Sambandham's and extend his results to a wider class of covariance functions. Under certain restrictions on the spectral density, we will show that the order of the expected number of real zeros remains the same as in the independent case.
The K-level crossings of a random algebraic polynomial with dependent coefficients
Jeffrey Matayoshi
Mathematics , 2009,
Abstract: For a random polynomial with standard normal coefficients, two cases of the K-level crossings have been considered by Farahmand. When the coefficients are independent, Farahmand was able to derive an asymptotic value for the expected number of level crossings, even if K is allowed to grow to infinity. Alternatively, it was shown that when the coefficients have a constant covariance, the expected number of level crossings is reduced by half. In this paper we are interested in studying the behavior for dependent standard normal coefficients where the covariance is decaying and no longer constant. Using techniques similar to those of Farahmand, we will be able to show that for a wide range of covariance functions behavior similar to the independent case can be expected.

Oliveira, Bráulio F.T.;Takay, Fernanda C.;Shida, Tatiana M.;Santo, Ruth M.;Souza Jr., Abelardo C.;Matayoshi, Suzana;
Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46652004000500012
Abstract: purpose: to describe three cases of orbital tuberculosis, with their clinical characteristics and respective diagnostic procedures, showing the importance of histopathology for the correct diagnosis. patients and methods: three patients diagnosed and treated for orbital tuberculosis, in the "hospital das clínicas da faculdade de medicina da universidade de s?o paulo" during the years of 1999 and 2001. results: all of the patients were female and referred a chronic evolution of swelling of one eyelid associated or not with other symptoms. they had not hiv infection. two of them had positive epidemiology for tuberculosis. however, the search for systemic evidence of the disease and staining for bacilli (ziehl-neelsen method) were negative in all three patients. in all the cases, only the biopsy with immunohistochemical analysis could confirm the diagnosis. comments: orbital involvement is a rare ocular manifestation of tuberculosis. even in a tertiary hospital, few cases, if any, are diagnosed per year. however, the global incidence and prevalence of m. tuberculosis infections is not under control yet, and it has been a serious public health problem. thus, one must be aware of the possibility of tuberculosis among the orbital diseases.
A??o do colírio de fenilefrina 10% no posicionamento palpebral de indivíduos normais
Nunes, Tania Pereira;Matayoshi, Suzana;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492008000500006
Abstract: purpose: to determine the upper and lower eyelid position with a single drop of 10% phenylephrine in normal individuals and observe positional lid changes in upper and lower lids of the opposite eye. methods: prospective observational study including 24 healthy subjects of both genders (age range: 20-39 yrs) submitted to instillation of a single drop of 10% phenylephrine in the upper fornix of one randomly chosen eye. a video camera recorded the images of both eyes before and after eye drop application at 3, 10, 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes. the images were digitally processed and edited to analyze lid measurements (upper lid height: distance between the highest upper margin lid point and a horizontal line traced from the medial to the lateral canthus; lower lid height: distance between the lowest margin lid point and the above-mentioned line). results: before and after drug instillation, upper lid height was significantly different (p<0.001) at all moments with a mean elevation of 0.79 mm. the lower lid height changed too with a mean retraction of 0.37 mm. in the fellow eye upper lid drop was observed at almost all moments with the lowest value at 3 minutes (mean reduction of 0.68 mm) and elevation (0.37 mm) of lower lid. conclusions: this experiment showed that a single drop of 10% phenylephrine acted not only on the upper eyelid but also on lower lid of the tested eye. control mechanism of lid opening and closing changed upper and lower lid positioning of the opposite eye in healthy subjects.

Natural Science (NS) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/ns.2010.23034
Abstract: This article discusses the causes of formation of micron-size protein structures in liquid plasma or serum of the patients with different diseases, which are accompanied by inflammatory reac-tions. Self-organizing processes in sessile dry-ing drops of natural and model biological liq-uids are used for study of possible mechanisms of development the protein phase instability in serum. There was shown that violation of opti-mal ratio between albumin and osmotic active components could lead to loss of albumin ag-gregative stability and albumin coagulation structures formation. Possible role of these structures in pathogenesis of inflammation is discussed.

Case Reports in Medicine , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/685946
Abstract: Ovarian-type surface epithelial neoplasms of the testis and paratestis are uncommon, and the mucinous subtype is particularly rare. These tumors represent a counterpart to ovarian cancer. Malignant tumors have the potential for metastatic spread and are often fatal. The case of a 59-year-old man with testicular mucinous adenocarcinoma is presented. Computed tomography indicated involvement of the paraaortic and pelvic lymph nodes, so chemotherapy was initiated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second paper regarding responsiveness to chemotherapies used in ovarian cancer.

Health (Health) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/health.2012.47062
Abstract: This study explored cross-cultural differences between Japan and Russia in terms of women’s body images, proneness to eating disorders, and the effects of dichotomous thinking. Participants included 419 Japanese and 187 Russian college women who completed the Dichotomous Thinking Inventory (DTI), the 26-item version of the Eating Attitudes Test, and responses regarding nine figures representing female body shapes. The mean age of the participants was 19.8 years, with no significant age differences between the countries. The results showed that Japanese women have leaner ideal body images than Russian women, whereas there were no cross-cultural differences in the participants’ real body images. DTI scores among Russian participants were higher than DTI scores among Japanese participants, which indicated that Russian women think more dichotomously than Japanese. Structural equation modeling indicated a significantly negative effect of dichotomous thinking only on real body image in Russia; the ideal body image had greater effects on eating disorder in Russia than in Japan.
