Abstract: This study investigated the relationships between chemical dependency and personalitystructure in a Brazilian sample. Participants were college students (n=35) and patients of a drug recovery center (n= 48). Two personality scales based on the Big-5 Model were used to measure Extraversion and Agreeableness. A semi-structured interview was used to identify events in the patients' life histories that might support specific classifications. Participants' scores were also compared to Brazilian normative samples. The results showed significant differences between clinical and non-clinical groups in Agreeableness, but not in Extraversion. Logistic regression analyses were conducted using scales and interview aspects for predicting group membership. The model showed 92.1% general predictive power. Results pointed to the advantage of using both interview and objective techniques to assess individuals with antisocial personality symptoms.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to assess the effect of feeding rabbits diets containing coconut meal (cm) on meat proximal composition, the fatty acid profile, and the polyunsaturated to saturated (p/s) fatty acids ratio in the meat. the experiment utilized 60 rabbits fed diets containing five levels of cm (0.00, 6.25, 12.50, 18.75, and 25.00%) and 12 animals per treatment. increasing levels of cm in the diet did not affect (p > 0.05) meat centesimal composition. the levels of palmitoleic, stearic, and linolenic acids in the meat were linearly affected by dietary cm levels. when compared to the levels of fatty acids in the meat from the 0.00% cm diet, the palmitic acid was lower (p < 0.05) in the meat from all diets containing cm, the myristic and stearic acids were higher (p < 0.05), and the palmitoleic acid was lower (p < 0.05) in the meat from the diet containing 25.00% cm. the linolenic acid level was lower (p < 0.05) in meats from diets containing either 18.75 or 25.00% cm. the p/s relation in the meat was not affected (p > 0.05) by the levels of cm in the diets. this suggested that the inclusion of this by-product in the diets is feasible even at the 25.00% level.
Exploring MIA-QSARs for farnesyltransferase inhibitory effect of antimalarial compounds refined by docking simulations  [PDF]

Journal of Biophysical Chemistry (JBPC) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jbpc.2012.31008
Abstract: Two series of farnesyltransferase (FTase) inhibitors were grouped and their antimalarial activi-ties modeled by means of multivariate image analysis applied to quantitative structure-activity relationship (MIA-QSAR). A reliable model was achieved, with r2 for calibration, external prediction and leave-one-out cross-validation of 0.96, 0.87 and 0.83, respectively. Therefore, biological activities of congeners can be estimated using the QSAR model. The bioactivities of new compounds based on the miscellany of substructures of the two classes of FTase inhibitors were predicted using the MIA-QSAR model and the most promising ones were submitted to ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion) and docking evaluation. Despite the smaller interaction energy of the two most promising, predicted compounds in comparison to the two most active compounds of the data set, one of the proposed structures did not violate any Lipinski’s rule of five. Therefore, it is either a potential drug or may drive synthesis of similar, improved compounds.
Ensaio monográfico da familia Cyathodiniidae
Cunha, A. Marques da;Freitas, Gilberto de;

Abstract: 1) cyathodiniidae are ciliates morphologically characterized by the presence of a depression antero-ventrally opened, the pseudo-peristoma. ciliation is represented by uniform cilia, arranged in transverse or oblique lines, inserted both on the external surface of the pseudo-peristoma, and onits internal surface. the cyathodiniidae show clear nucleous duplicity, morphologically and functionally manifested. 2) the cyathodiniidae, have not mouth and its nutrition is accomplished by osmose through a cellular membrane. 3) the cyathodiniidae multiply by binary fission accompanied by lost of cilia and endogenous formation of two new ciliations, the plane of division is longitudinal or oblique or, according to the ideas of chatton and lwoff, perpendicularly to the cinetia direction. 4) reorganisation is accomplished by endomixis which is accompanied by lost of cilia and endogenous formation of a new ciliature. 5) endomixis is observed in individuals not differing from the neutral forms in its morphology and dimensions. 6) in the endomixis process the micronucleus, after 2 successive mitoses, form 4 nuclei, 3 of which degenerate, and the remaining forming, by division, a new micronucleus and the placenta which transform itself in a new macronucleus. 7) the process, in both genera forming the family, is identical, only differeing in the way of the degeneration of macronucleus and of the remains of the division of micronucleus. 8) though in cyathodinium the degeneration results from a picnose, in cyathodinioides macronucleus and remains of micronucleus fision degenerate by disaggregation in granules, through the process of macronucleiform degeneration described by ivanic. 9) degeneration macronucleiform must be interpreted as an aborted evolution and not, as ivanic suggests, an evidence of macronucleus being an organ in degeneration. 10) cyathodiniidae are transmitted by cyst. 11) cyathodinnidae must be considered as true ciliates modified by parasite life, whose study must n

Abstract: this article analyses the references made by john dewey to the philosophy and social life of classical greece in his book democracy and education, which are related to conceptions of society, philosophical concepts and educational propositions. its main purpose is to elucidate what dewey appropriates from the greeks to compose the arguments that sustain the thesis he wishes to communicate to his readers. its analytical instruments are based on the study of rhetorical and dialectical practices developed by perelman and olbrechts-tyteca in their treatise of argumentation: the new rhetoric and on a critical analysis of the syllogistic form elaborated by toulmin in the book the uses of argument.

Influence of incorporation of fluoroalkyl methacrylates on roughness and flexural strength of a denture base acrylic resin
Cunha, Tatiana Ramirez;Regis, Romulo Rocha;Bonatti, Marília Rodrigues;Souza, Raphael Freitas de;
Journal of Applied Oral Science , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-77572009000200006
Abstract: fluorinated denture base acrylic resins can present more stable physical properties when compared with conventional polymers. this study evaluated the incorporation of a fluoroalkyl methacrylate (fma) mixture in a denture base material and its effect on roughness and flexural strength. a swelling behavior assessment of acrylic resin specimens (n=3, per substance) after 12 h of fma or methyl methacrylate (mma) immersion was conducted to determine the solvent properties. rectangular specimens (n=30) were allocated to three groups, according to the concentration of fma substituted into the monomer component of a heat-polymerized acrylic resin (lucitone 550), as follows: 0% (control), 10% and 20% (v/v). acrylic resin mixed with concentrations of 25% or more did not reach the dough stage and was not viable. the surface roughness and flexural strength of the specimens were tested. variables were analyzed by anova and tukey's test (a=0.05). immersion in fma produced negligible swelling, and mma produced obvious swelling and dissolution of the specimens. surface roughness at concentrations of 0%, 10% and 20% were: 0.25 ± 0.04, 0.24 ± 0.04, 0.22 ± 0.03 mm (f=1.78; p=0.189, not significant). significant differences were found for flexural strength (f=15.92; p<0.001) and modulus of elasticity (f=7.67; p=0.002), with the following results: 96 ± 6, 82 ± 5, 84 ± 6 mpa, and 2,717 ± 79, 2,558 ± 128, 2574 ± 87 mpa, respectively. the solvent properties of fma against acrylic resin are weak, which would explain why concentrations over 20% were not viable. surface changes were not detected after the incorporation of fma in the denture base acrylic resin tested. the addition of fma into denture base resin may lower the flexural strength and modulus of elasticity, regardless of the tested concentration.

Baptista, Tatiana Wargas de Faria;Fausto, Márcia Cristina Rodrigues;Cunha, Marcela Silva da;
Physis: Revista de Saúde Coletiva , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-73312009000400006
Abstract: this paper analyzes the scientific production in primary care in brazil published in four magazines with wide circulation in the field of public health - cadernos de saúde pública, revista de saúde pública, ciência & saúde coletiva and saúde em debate - in order to identify the concepts used, the approaches to studies, and the main issues associated with the discussion of primary care. the analysis was based on the understanding of the political and institutional context of health, an attempt to correlate the time of policy with knowledge production. the analysis covered the discussions held in these journals from 1977 to 2006. there was a lack of studies of conceptual approach and many case studies without the promotion of dialogue between authors and institutions, weakening this area as a knowledge producer. this study aims to contribute to a deeper debate on the theoretical model of care focused on primary care and to identify the strength of the proposals, thus contributing to consolidate the field.
