Abstract: In the molecule of the title compound, C16H11FOS, the benzene ring is oriented at a dihedral angle of 89.68 (3)° with respect to the planar [maximum deviation 0.009 (2) ] isocoumarin ring system. An intramolecular C—H...S interaction results in the formation of a planar five-membered ring. In the crystal structure, intermolecular C—H...O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into chains parallel to the c axis. A π–π contact between the isocoumarin rings [centroid–centroid distance = 3.818 (3) ] may further stabilize the structure.

Abstract: The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C16H11FO2, contains two independent molecules. The isochromene ring systems are planar and are oriented with respect to the fluorobenzene rings at dihedral angles of 87.15 (3) and 87.85 (3)° in the two molecules.

Abstract: In the title compound, C16H11BrO2, the isocoumarin ring system is planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.015 ) and subtends a dihedral angle of 88.90 (2)° with the bromobenzene ring. In the crystal, molecules are linked, forming a three-dimensional packing pattern involving C—H...O interactions, Br...O contacts [3.4734 (10) ] and π–π stacking interactions with centroid–centroid distances ranging from 3.667 (2) to 3.765 (2) .
COMMINUTED FRACTURES OF SHAFT OF FEMUR

Abstract: Comminuted fracture shaft of the femur is a common entity faced by orthopaedic surgeon. Road traffic accidents are the major cause of these comminuted fractures. But with increase in violence, gun shots are also causing these fractures frequently. Objectives: To see and compare the result of intramedullary interlocking nailing and biological plating in terms of infection rate, union rate and to assess the other complications. Design: Prospective study Setting: Department of Orthopedic Surgery Allied Hospital Faisalabad. Period: From Sept 2001 to Sept 2003. Patients & Methods: Forty comminuted fractures of femur were managed ,twenty by bridge plating and twenty by interlocking nailing. Results: Results were compared with reference to healing time, infection rate, operating time and hospital stay and was comparable to other studies. Conclusions: Closed interlocked intra-medullary nailing is an excellent method for treating comminuted femoral shaft fracture. But requires expensive equipment and more expertise. Bridge plating require no special instrumentations and can be done at periphery with less facilities available.
Nitrogen Level and Plant Density Effects on Different Agro-physiological Traits of Maize

Abstract: Nitrogen level and plant density effects on different agro-physiological traits of maize cv., "Golden" were studied under field conditions at the Agriculture Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad in Autumn 1996. Treatments comprised four nitrogen levels, i.e. 0, 100, 200 and 300 kg N ha-1 and three plant densities viz., 11.11, 8.33 and 6.67 plants m-2. Yield components, such as number of cobs per plant, number of grains per cob and 1000-grain weight were decreased at higher plant density and low nitrogen levels. The maximum grain yield of 7.11 t ha-1 was recorded from the crop fertilized @ 300 kg N ha-1 and raised at 11.11 plants m-2, while the minimum (2.03 t ha-1) was found in control (plant density of 6.67 plants m-2 without N fertilization). The results suggest that 200-300 kg N ha-1 along with 11.11 plants m-2 should be used to obtain the maximum grain yield of maize cv. "Golden" under the edaphic and climatic conditions matching to those of the experiment.
