Evaluation of the radiopacity of root canal sealers by digitization of radiographic images

Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the radiopacity of a zinc oxide and eugenol-based (endofill), a calcium hydroxide-based (sealapex), two resin-based (sealer 26 and ah plus), and a silicone-based root canal sealer (roeko seal). specimens, measuring 10mm in diameter and 1mm in thickness, were radiographed simultaneously with an aluminum step wedge using occlusal films, according to iso 6876/2001 standards. radiographs were digitized, and the radiopacity of sealers was compared to the different thicknesses of the aluminum step wedge, using the vixwin 2000 software. results demonstrated that ah plus was the most radiopaque sealer, while sealapex was the least radiopaque (p<0.05). roeko seal, endofill and sealer 26 presented intermediate radiopacity values. sealapex presented less radiopacity than the other types of root canal sealers.
Evaluation of the thermoplasticity of different gutta-percha cones and the TC system

Abstract: objective: the aim of this study was to evaluate the thermoplasticity of three commercial brands of gutta-percha (tanari, dentsply 0.06, and roeko), and of the tc system. materials and methods: standardized specimens were fabricated from the materials to be evaluated. specimens were placed in water at 70oc for 60 seconds. following that, they were positioned between two glass slabs and each set was compressed by a 5kg weight. images of the specimens before and after compression were digitized and analyzed by the image tool software. the flow capacity of each material was confirmed by the difference between the initial and final areas of each sample. results: the resulting data were analyzed by anova. the tc system presented the greatest thermoplasticity values (p<0.05). among the gutta-percha cones, the roeko brand showed higher thermoplasticity than the others (p<0.05). conclusion: the gutta-percha from tc system present good thermoplasticity capacity.
Radiopacity evaluation of root canal sealers containing calcium hydroxide and MTA

Abstract: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiopacity of root canal sealers containing calcium hydroxide and mta (acroseal, sealer 26, sealapex, endo cpm sealer, epiphany and intrafill). five disc-shaped specimens (10 x 1 mm) were fabricated from each material, according to the iso 6876/2001 standard. after setting of the materials, radiographs were taken using occlusal film and a graduated aluminum stepwedge varying from 2 to 16 mm in thickness. the dental x-ray unit (ge1000) was set at 50 kvp, 10 ma, 18 pulses/s and distance of 33.5 cm. the radiographs were digitized and the radiopacity compared to that of the aluminum stepwedge using vixwin-2000 software (gendex). the data (mmal) were analyzed statistically by anova and tukey's test at the 5% significance level. epiphany and intrafill presented the highest radiopacity values (8.3 mmal and 7.5 mmal respectively, p < 0.05) followed by sealer 26 (6.3 mmal), sealapex (6.1 mmal) and endo cpm sealer (6 mmal). acroseal was the least radiopaque material (4 mmal, p < 0.05). in conclusion, the calcium hydroxide- and mta-containing root canal sealers had different radiopacities. however, all materials presented radiopacity values above the minimum recommended by the iso standard.
Effectiveness of gutta-percha and Resilon in filling lateral root canals using the Obtura II system

Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of gutta-percha and resilon in filling lateral root canals by using the obtura ii system. root canals of artificial teeth were prepared using a standard protocol, and lateral canals were made in three thirds of the root canal. the root canals were filled with either obtura gutta-percha (ob), endo-points flow gutta-percha (ed), or resilon (re) by using the obtura ii system. the fillings were evaluated using digitized radiographs and analyzed by using image tool software. outlines of the total areas of the lateral canals and the filled areas were used to determine the percentage of filling in each lateral canal. data were analyzed with the kruskal-wallis and dunn tests at a 5% significance level. re and ed showed better results than ob did in the three thirds of the root canals. when the root canal thirds were compared, ob and re were more effective in the cervical third than in the apical third (p < 0.05). in conclusion, resilon and endoflow gutta-percha were effective in filling lateral canals by using the obtura ii system.
Effect of different dye solutions on the evaluation of the sealing ability of mineral trioxide aggregate

Abstract: alkaline materials have shown incompatibility with methylene blue dye in leakage experiments. the goal of the present study was to analyze the effect of different dyes on the evaluation of the apical sealing ability of mineral trioxide aggregate root-end fillings. fifty-six extracted human canines were submitted to root canal instrumentation and obturation. after apical resection, retrograde cavities were prepared and teeth were randomly divided into four experimental (n = 13) and two control groups (n = 2). the following root-end filling materials were used: groups 1 and 2 - pro root mta (dentsply), groups 3 and 4 - zinc oxide-eugenol cement (zoe). teeth in groups 1 and 3 were immersed in 2% methylene blue solution, while teeth in groups 2 and 4 were immersed in 0.2% rhodamine b in a reduced pressure environment for 48 hours. teeth were then longitudinally sectioned and leakage was evaluated. results were submitted to statistical analysis (anova and tukey's test). group 1 presented the least leakage (p < 0.05). it was concluded that the evaluation of the sealing ability of mta is influenced by the dye used, since this material presented better sealing ability when evaluated with methylene blue, but was similar to zoe when evaluated with rhodamine b.
Actividad antimicrobiana de diferentes tipos de cementos endodónticos

Abstract: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la actividad antimicrobiana de los cementos endodónticos a base de resina (Epiphany, Sealer 26 e AH Plus), cementos a base de silicona (Roeko Seal) y cementos de óxido de zinc y eugenol (Intrafill), sobre cinco diferentes especies de microorganismos. El método utilizado fue el de difusión en Agar. Una capa base fue confeccionada usando Agar Müller-Hinton (MH) y los pozos fueron formados por la remoción del Agar. Los materiales fueron colocados en los pozos después de su manipulación. Los microorganismos usados fueron: Micrococcus luteus (ATCC 9341), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC6538), Escherichia coli (ATCC10538), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC27853), Candida albicans (ATCC 1023) y Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 10541). Las placas fueron mantenidas a temperatura ambiente por 2 horas para pre-difusión y posteriormente incubadas a 37(0) C por 24 horas. Los resultados demostraron que el cemento Epiphany y el Sealer 26 presentaron actividad antimicrobiana sobre todas las cepas evaluadas. El cemento AH Plus y el Intrafill mostraron una acción antimicrobiana sobre todos los microorganismos excepto P aeruginosa y el Roeko Seal no fue efectivo sobre ningún microorganismo. The materials were placed into the wells immediately after manipulation. The microorganisms used were: Micrococcus luteus (ATCC9341), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC6538), Escherichia coli (ATCC10538), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC27853), Candida albicans (ATCC 10231), and Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 10541).The plates were kept at room temperature for 2 h for prediffusion and then incubated at 37(0) C for 24 h. The results showed that Epiphany and Sealer 26 presented antimicrobial activity against all strains. AH Plus and Intrafill presented antimicrobial activity against all strains except P aeruginosa and Roeko Seal wasn’t effective against any microorganism.

pH and calcium ion release evaluation of pure and calcium hydroxide-containing Epiphany for use in retrograde filling

Abstract: objective: hydroxyl (oh-) and calcium (ca++) ion release was evaluated in six materials: g1) sealer 26, g2) white mineral trioxide aggregate (mta), g3) epiphany, g4) epiphany + 10% calcium hydroxide (ch), g5) epiphany + 20% ch, and g6) zinc oxide and eugenol. material and methods: specimens were placed in polyethylene tubes and immersed in distilled water. after 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h, 7, 14, and 28 days, the water was assessed for ph with a ph meter and for ca++ release by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. results: g1, g2, g4, and g5 had the highest ph until 14 days (p<0.05). g1 presented the highest ca++ release until 6 h, and g4 and g5, from 12 h through 14 days. ca++ release was greater for g1 and g2 at 28 days. g6 released the least ca++. conclusions: mta, sealer 26, epiphany, and epiphany + ch release oh- and ca++ ions. epiphany + ch may be an alternative as retrofilling material.
Radiopacity evaluation of root-end filling materials by digitization of images

Abstract: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiopacity of 5 root-end filling materials (white mta-angelus, grey mta-angelus, irm, super eba and sealer 26). five specimens (10 mm diameter x 1 mm thickness) were made from each material and radiographed next to an aluminum stepwedge varying in thickness from 2 to 16 mm. radiographs were digitized and the radiopacity of the materials was compared to that of the aluminum stepwedge using vixwin 2000 software in millimeters of aluminum (mm al). data were analyzed statistically by anova and tukey's test at 5% significance level. radiopacity values varied from 3 mm al to 5.9 mm al. sealer 26 and irm presented the highest radiopacity values (p<0.05), while white/grey mta and super eba presented the lowest radiopacity values (p<0.05). the tested root-end filling materials presented different radiopacities, white/grey mta and super eba being the least radiopaque materials.
Periapical repair after root canal filling with different root canal sealers

Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate periapical repair after root canal filling with different endodontic sealers. sixty-four root canals from dog′s teeth were filled, divided into 4 groups (n=16). root canals were instrumented with k-type files and irrigated with 1% sodium hypochlorite solution. root canals were filled in the same session by active lateral condensation of the cones and sealers: intrafill, ah plus, roeko seal and resilon/epiphany system. after 90 days, the animals were euthanized and the tissues to be evaluated were processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. for histopathological analysis, the following parameters were evaluated: inflammatory process, mineralized tissue resorption, and apical mineralized tissue deposition. histopathological analysis demonstrated that intrafill had less favorable results in terms of apical and periapical repair, compared to the other sealers (p<0.05). ah plus, roeko seal, and epiphany sealers had similar and satisfactory results (p>0.05). in conclusion, ah plus and the materials roeko seal and epiphany are good options for clinical use in endodontics.
