Numerical investigations on the finite time singularity in two-dimensional Boussinesq equations

Abstract: To investigate the finite time singularity in three-dimensional (3D) Euler flows, the simplified model of 3D axisymmetric incompressible fluids (i.e., two-dimensional Boussinesq approximation equations) is studied numerically. The system describes a cap-like hot zone of fluid rising from the bottom, while the edges of the cap lag behind, forming eye-like vortices. The hot liquid is driven by the buoyancy and meanwhile attracted by the vortices, which leads to the singularity-forming mechanism in our simulation. In the previous 2D Boussinesq simulations, the symmetricial initial data is used. However, it is observed that the adoption of symmetry leads to coordinate singularity. Moreover, as demonstrated in this work that the locations of peak values for the vorticity and the temperature gradient becomes far apart as $t$ approaches the predicted blow-up time. This suggests that the symmetry assumption may be unreasonable for searching solution blow-ups. One of the main contributions of this work is to propose an appropriate asymmetric initial condition, which avoids coordinate singularity and also makes the blow-up to occur much earlier than that given by the previously simulations. The shorter simulation time suppresses the development of the round-off error. On the numerical side, the pseudo-spectral method with filtering technique is adopted. The resolutions adopted in this study vary from $1024^2$, $2048^2$, $4096^2$ to $6144^2$. With our proposed asymmetric initial condition, it is shown that the $4096^2$ and $6144^2$ runs yield convergent results when $t$ is fairly close to the predicted blow-up time. Moreover, as expected the locations of peak values for the vorticity and the temperature gradient are very close to each other as $t$ approaches the predicted blow-up time.
Resolving Small-scale Structures in Two-dimensional Boussinesq Convection by Spectral Methods with High Resolutions

Abstract: Two-dimensional Boussinesq convection is studied numerically with very fine spatial resolutions up to 4096^2. Our numerical study starts with a smooth asymmetric initial condition, which is chosen to make the flow field well confined in the computational domain until the blow-up time (T_c). Our study shows that the vorticity will blow up at a finite time with |\omega|_{max} \~{(T_c-t)}^{-1.61} and |\nabla \theta|_{max} ~ {(T_c - t)}^{-3.58}.

Research on State Transition Model Based on Stock Market Volume-Price Distribution  [PDF]

This paper discusses Volume-Price distribution of stock market. The normal distribution-like structures spanning different time are studied, based on which we propose a predictive model of Volume-Price distribution in China stock market. The paper includes three parts: First, the hypothesis that the Chinese stock market day trading volume-price distributions does not obey normal distribution is verified. However, a “fat tail” approximate normal distribution pattern is founded. After smoothing the distribution of volume and price, approximate normal distributions of trading volume and price distributions for different time spans are discovered. On the basis of two previous studies, state transition model of volume-price distributions is proposed. State transition probability table is created based on clustering analysis. The mode can appropriately account for the transition Chinese stock market trading volume- price distribution network transitions between states, and can be used to predict possible future distribution, to provide a quantitative indicator in the stock market investment.
Finite Element Analysis of Contact Pressures between Seat Cushion and Human Buttock-Thigh Tissue  [PDF]

Abstract: Unrelieved pressure on load-bearing muscle tissues of humans can produce pressure ulcers. In a seated upright posture, the highest pressures occur inferior to the ischial tuberosities (ITs). Moreover, the vibration can initiate the development of pressure ulcer. Therefore, the seat cushion is not only used to lower the maximum seating pressure on buttocks but also minimize the transmission of vibration to human body. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of varying vertical vibration frequencies on seat-interface contact pressure during sitting on three different seat cushions by using a finite element modeling approach. A simplified two-dimensional human buttock-thigh model was developed to simulate the mechanical response of the muscle of buttocks and thigh under vertical vibration. Static and vibrational loads with five different frequencies of 0.1, 1, 10, 30 and 50 Hz and the same amplitude of 3 mm were applied to different seat cushions. The result showed that the “SAF 6060” seat cushion with both hyperelastic and viscoelastic behaviors could be effective in reducing the amplitude of varying maximum contact pressure, especially for the frequency of 10-20 Hz. This method could help in design of seat cushions with appropriate material properties and shape so as to reduce vibrations transmitted to human body at a certain frequency range.
An Initial Investigation on the Distribution, Living Conditions and Traits of the Hazel in Great Xing’an Ridge Region  [PDF]

Abstract: To take full advantage of the natural hazel resources and improve its yield and quality in Great Xing’an Ridge region, we carried out an initial investigation. The result showed that: there are two species in this area: Corylus heterophlla and Corylus mandshurica. They mainly distribute from south of XinLin town, HuMa county, Heilongjiang province to south boundary of Great Xing’ an Ridge in mountain and hilly areas. Most of hazel in this area was under the state of natural growth with no scientific man-management. Soil where Corylus heterophlla grew was about 40 cm to 50 cm and Corylus mandshurica was 30 cm to 45 cm. The main plant disease was powdery mildew and insect pest were Curculio dieckmani, Zeuzera sp. and Faust Cockchafer. 100-seed weight of Corylus heterophylla was more than twice of Corylus mandshuria. However, Corylus mandshuria was plumper, had much more kernel and much less empty shell than Corylus heterophylla, and what’s more, shell sickness of it turned to be significantly thinner than Corylus heterophylla, all of which showed great cultivation value and economic commodity value.

Abstract: Objective: To construct to silence tissue factor (TF) expression in Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) for providing evidence of the gene therapy and prevention of coagulation dysfunction in placental abruption (PA) neonates. Methods: Cultured HUVECs in vitro were divided into control group and PA group, each including non-prevention, scramble siRNA and TF-siRNA subgroups. pENTRTM/U6-shRNA/TF vector expressing TF were constructed and transfected into HUVECs. The mRNA expression of TF was tested with RT-PCR, and TF protein expression was detected with immunofluorescence staining. Results: Monolayer HUVECs with short-rod and short spindle shaped were adherent to the bottom, forming paving stone arrangement. The TF mRNA expression was significantly different between control group and PA group (P < 0.01) and among different subgroups (P < 0.01). In non-prevention subgroups, significant difference was observed in TF mRNA expression between control group and PA group (P < 0.05). A Measurement Study on the Benefits of Open Routers for Overlay Routing

Abstract: As the rapid proliferation of multimedia communications has been significantly challenging the Internet on providing a high-quality transporting service to achieve desirable audio and video user experience, overlay routing is proposed as a practical technique to complement some inherent deficiencies of the current IP routing service. While many research and realistic systems have proven the effectiveness of overlay routing on improving end-to-end (E2E) performance, this paper performs a measurement study on the potential benefits of open routers, a novel promising technical concept emerging recently, to boost overlay routing for multimedia communications. Based on analysis of a large amount of measurements collected between more than 200 PlanetLab sites over the world, our results show that when being deployed appropriately, even a small number of open routers will be able to remarkably enhance overlay routing’s ability of improving E2E performance for multimedia communications. Accordingly, several practical heuristics for selecting suitable places to deploy open routers are proposed and comparatively evaluated based on real Internet topological and routing data.
