Context-Dependent Recognition Is Related to Specific Processes Taking Place at Encoding and at Retrieval  [PDF]

Abstract: Context Effect (CE) refers to the facilitation of memory for target information due to the similarity of contextual information available during both learning and retrieval. Many studies have attempted to identify variables that influence this effect, producing inconsistent findings due to differences in how target and context information are defined and measured. In the current study, recognition memory for faces was tested under different learning instructions and diverse context-recognition conditions. When memory instructions were used, recognition rates proved higher for the original target-context pairs than for all other possible target-context conditions. A different CE profile was observed for attentional instructions while old, yet not necessarily original, target-context faces yielded better results than other context conditions. These findings indicate that memory instructions lead to CE based on the formation of a specific association between target and context information, while instructions focusing on attentional resources lead to CE based on familiarity judgments. The double dissociation reported here is that memory instructions yield binding as opposed to familiarity type of CE, while attention instructions yield familiarity and not binding type of CE, supporting the claim that CE is not homogeneous and involves a number of cognitive processes.

Abstract: Within the frames of semiclassical approach, intra-atomic electric field potentials are parameterized in form of radial step-like functions. Corresponding parameters for 80 chemical elements are tabulated by fitting of the semiclassical energy levels of atomic electrons to their first principle values. In substance binding energy and electronic structure calculations, superposition of the semiclassically parameterized constituent-atomic potentials can serve as a good initial approximation of its inner potential: the estimated errors of the determined structural and energy parameters make up a few percent.

Large Carpenter Bees as Agricultural Pollinators

Abstract: Large carpenter bees (genus Xylocopa) are wood-nesting generalist pollinators of broad geographical distribution that exhibit varying levels of sociality. Their foraging is characterized by a wide range of food plants, long season of activity, tolerance of high temperatures, and activity under low illumination levels. These traits make them attractive candidates for agricultural pollination in hot climates, particularly in greenhouses, and of night-blooming crops. Carpenter bees have demonstrated efficient pollination service in passionflower, blueberries, greenhouse tomatoes and greenhouse melons. Current challenges to the commercialization of these attempts lie in the difficulties of mass-rearing Xylocopa, and in the high levels of nectar robbing exhibited by the bees. 1. The Role of Non-Apis Bees in Agricultural Pollination Insect pollination of agricultural crops is a critical ecosystem service. Fruit, vegetable or seed production from 87 of the 115 leading global food crops depends upon animal pollination [1]. The value of insect pollination for worldwide agricultural production is estimated at € 153?billion, which represents 9.5% of the value of the world agricultural production used for human food in 2005 [2]. The area cultivated with pollinator-dependent crops has increased disproportionately over the last decades, suggesting that the need for pollination services will greatly increase in the near future [3]. This contributes to the concern to beekeepers, growers of insect-pollinated crops, and policy-makers over recent widespread declines in honey bee populations (Colony Collapse Disorder) [4–6]. Wild and domesticated non-Apis bees effectively complement honey bee pollination in many crops [7, 8]. Examples of management of non-Apis species for agricultural pollination include the use of bumble bees, primarily for the pollination of greenhouse tomatoes, the solitary bees Nomia and Osmia for the pollination of orchard crops, Megachile for alfalfa pollination, and social stingless bees to pollinate coffee and other crops [9–12]. This paper focuses on the large cosmopolitan genus Xylocopa as an additional provider of agricultural pollination services. Aspects of these bees’ life-history, social organization, and foraging ecology are discussed in the context of their potential role as crop pollination agents. 2. Abstract: In Flanders, the Entry of a new ruler into one of the cities of his domain (Joyeuse Entrée) transformed the urban landscape into a visual pamphlet – an opportunity to lay out the most urgent needs, hopes and demands of the people through a series of ephemeral monuments and civic ceremonies. The triumphal procession of the Archdukes Albert and Isabella into Antwerp in 1599, was likewise used by the city and by the creator of the pageant, humanist and city secretary Johannes Bochius, to lay out the main concerns and worries of their time. The article focuses on two of the monuments and the two ceremonies of oath taking in order to reveal the use of the pageant's structure as a 'progressing viewing experience'. The consideration of the viewing order reveals not only the strive for peace and the call to establish a self-governmental system under the rule of the new governors, but also the political thought of the time and the surprising demand to establish a mixed government, containing the fundaments of aristocracy and democracy within the monarchic rule of Spain.
Integrated Access to Hybrid Information Resources

Abstract: This paper is entitled "Integrated access to hybrid information resources", but integrated access is just a means to reach an end. Our challenge is to create an integrated environment in a heterogeneous world. Users are not aware, and do not want to be aware, of the differences between the various information resources that their institution provides. All they want is to be able to attain the information they are looking for, in the simplest and most straightforward way possible.
Developing an Electronic Resource Management System: Verde from Ex Libris

Abstract: Rapid growth in the number of electronic resources and the complexity of managing e-collections has posed new challenges for libraries and hence requires the development of new tools. To meet this need, Ex Libris is developing a new product, an electronic resource management (ERM) system. The development process began in 2002 and has benefited from the company's 25 years of experience in providing libraries with various products - an integrated library system, digital asset management system, library portal, and link server. Working with an international focus group and development partners and interacting with the Digital Library Federation's Electronic Resource Management Initiative (DLF ERMI) committee, Ex Libris explored the various aspects of the e-resource life cycle. As a result, the Ex Libris ERM system was designed to address the issues raised through this collaboration and the DLF requirements. The interface of the system represents all of its components; it includes navigation options and facilitates workflows that support the various activities that librarians perform when dealing with electronic resources. This paper describes the development process of the Ex Libris ERM system. The emphasis is on the particular functionality required for managing e-resources and the ways in which existing systems in the library arena can handle specific tasks.
User-Centric Solutions for Scholarly Research in the Library

Abstract: In recent years, the behavior of library users has been undergoing change, as they rely increasingly on web search engines and internet services, rather than libraries, to fulfill their information needs. This paper describes the expectations of such users when looking for information and presents an optimized approach that enables research libraries to provide their patrons with an up-to-date user experience while capitalizing on the unique advantages offered by libraries. Ways of integrating the new solution with the current library environment are discussed, as well as future directions. The Primo discovery and delivery system from Ex Libris serves as an example of such solutions.
