Study of sunscreen activity of aqueous, methanol and acetone extracts of leaves of Pongamia pinnata (L.) pierre, fabaceae

Abstract: The present research work evaluates the photoabsorptive property of different extracts of the leaves of Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre, Fabaceae, in the ultraviolet region (200-400 nm) and its comparison with a well-established standard sunscreen drug, p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). The shade-dried leaves of the plant were extracted in Soxhlet apparatus using three different solvents, i.e., water, methanol and acetone. The extracts were concentrated by evaporation of the solvent and finally dried to get dry extracts. Then, 20 mg of the dry extracts was dissolved in the respective solvents and their absorption spectra were measured using UV-visible spectrophotometer. Absorbance of different concentrations of the extracts, i.e., 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg/100 ml was read at their respective wavelengths (λmax ) of maximum absorption. The aqueous and methanol extracts were found to be highly effective in the UVB and moderately effective in the UVA region. Acetone extract was found to greatly absorb exclusively in the UVA region. The known standard drug PABA showed its protective action in the UVB and UVC regions with least effectiveness in the UVA region. The extracts of the leaves of the plant under study showed extremely good absorbance throughout the UV region including UVA region. The P. pinnata extract can be used to formulate highly effective sunscreen preparations as it will enhance and effectively contribute to the UV absorbing properties of a conventional sunscreen. It will also help in broadening the UV protection ability of the sunscreens along with the greatest advantage of avoiding the adverse and undesired effects of synthetic sunscreen compounds.
A review on Bacopa monniera: Current research and future prospects

Abstract: In recent times, the use of herbal products has increased tremendously in the western world as well as in developed countries. Lately, one of the outstandingly important medicinal plants, widely used therapeutically in the orient and becoming increasingly popular in the west is Bacopa monniera, a well-known nootropic. The present review summarizes our current knowledge of pharmacological actions, preclinical and clinical studies, major bioactives, reported mechanisms of actions, clinical efficacy, safety and the possibility of interactions of the herb with the conventional drugs. Simultaneously, research updates as well as avenues for further research are also mentioned concerning the plant.
Resveratrol and its biological actions

Abstract: Resveratrol is a phytoalexin that is found in a few edible food materials such as grape skins, pea-nuts and red wine. Numerous reports exists in the literature suggesting that dietary resveratrol may act as an antioxidant, promotes nitric oxide production, inhibits platelet aggregation and increases high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and subsequently may serve as a cardio-protective agent. Recent reports demonstrated that resveratrol can function as a cancer chemopreventive agent, exhibiting anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-ageing and antiviral properties. However, most of these effects are yet to be confirmed in humans. In the only clinical trial, high doses of special proprietary formulation has demonstrated blood sugar-lowering effects of resveratrol in type 2 diabetes mellitus. As with many polyphenols, resveratrol is reasonably well absorbed but has low bioavailability. It is metabolized by hydroxylation, glucuronidation, sulfation and hydrogenation. We reviewed the published literature and reports to consolidate information available on the biological activity of resveratrol using electronic databases as well as handpicked articles to summarize the biological effects of resveratrol and its clinical benefits against human diseases.
Capsulorhexis: Its safe limits

Abstract: We undertook this study to determine the safe limits of capsulorhexis during nucleus expression in 40 eyes of patients undergoing extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) with a posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC IOL) implantation and in 30 cadaver eyes. In group I (patient eyes), capsulorhexis of 4.5 to 7.5 mm was performed and the nucleus was expressed by hydrodissection. The nuclei measured 4.5 to 9.0 mm. One relaxing incision at 12 o′clock position had to be placed in 9 patients. In group II (cadaver eyes), continuous curvilinear capsulotomies of 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5 mm were made in 5 eyes each. No relaxing incisions were placed. In both the groups, nuclei of all sizes could be safely delivered through intact capsulotomies measuring 5.5 mm or more. In two patient eyes, posterior capsule rupture occurred with rhexis measuring 4.5 and 5.0 mm, respectively. In the cadaver eyes, intracapsular extraction occurred in 4 eyes with rhexis measuring 5.0 mm or less. We conclude that a rhexis less than 5.5 mm is not safe for nucleus delivery during ECCE.
OPTIMIZATION OF RESONANCE FREQUENCY OF CIRCULAR PATCH ANTENNA AT 5 GHZ USING PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION

Abstract: The microstrip antenna is small in size, simpler and less expensive to manufacture. They are more compatible than reflector antennas with printed-circuit technology. The microstrip patch antenna is a type of antenna that is thin, and has easy manufacturability, which provides a great advantage over traditional antennas. The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) has been introduced to the electromagnetic community for few years. In this paper PSO has been used for optimization of resonant frequency of circular probe-fed patch antenna. The investigation is made at a microwave frequency of 5 GHz. This Optimization problem has two variables which are height of dielectric substrate (h) and radius of the circular patch (a). The PSO algorithm is developed using ‘Turbo C’.In order to verify the PSO algorithm, the Rosenbrock function is used as a performance test problem.
Cardiac fibroblasts, fibrosis and extracellular matrix remodeling in heart disease

Abstract: Myocardium is comprised of a number of cell types, cardiomyocytes, cardiofibroblasts, endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells. Cardiac fibroblasts (CFBs) have the highest cell population in the myocardium, accounting for about two-thirds of the cells, while cardiomyocytes constitute about two-thirds of the myocardial tissue volume [1], although this ratio may vary in different species [2]. A number of excellent reviews have discussed the contribution of the contractile proteins and the molecules involved in intracellular calcium handing in cardiomyocytes in cardiac pathologies [3-5]. In this review, we will provide an overview of the literature on the role of CFBs in the context of extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling and its contribution to development and progression of heart disease. Fibroblasts (FBs) are cells of mesenchymal origin and are present in every tissue in the body [2,6]. Morphologically, FBs are flat and spindle-shaped with multiple projecting processes. In the myocardium, CFBs are unique among other cell types in that they lack a basement membrane. Although historically FBs were considered a homogeneous cell population, it has become increasingly clear that FBs from different tissues have different properties and functions [2,7]. In this review we will focus our discussion on CFBs, although some of the discussed properties and functions could also apply to FBs from other tissue sources.A number of cell surface markers have been identified for FBs and CFBs, but over time their specificity to these cells has been challenged. Vimentin, a protein that is present in the intermediate filaments of FBs, has been the most widely used FB marker – and although it is also expressed in other cell types such as endothelial cells [8] and myoepithelial cells [9], due to morphological differences among these cell types, vimentin remains a reliable marker for identifying FBs [10]. Abstract: Venous aneurysms are less common than arterial aneurysms in clinical practice, and the occurrence of such cases is a topic for publication. Aneurysms of the superior mesenteric vein (SMV) are rare, and their origin is unknown. Many aneurysms are asymptomatic, and the diagnosis is established from radiologic findings. Others are diagnosed after complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding or thrombosis with associated abdominal pain. Because of the rarity of this disease, therapy must be adapted to fit each case. A 55-year-old woman presented with pain in abdomen since 2 months. The diagnosis of this anomaly was made after Computed tomography (CT) scans, that demonstrated a mass. Apart from various etiological theories, portal hypertension was more likely cause of her SMV aneurysm. Case was treated by medical treatment like Sorbitrate, Propranolol, Omeprazole and Lasix. No aneurysm growth or complication was observed even after 2 years of follow-up.
Aspergilloma in sarcoidosis

Abstract: This is a case report of a 48-year-old man, followed up for nearly 30 years who initially developed sarcoidosis at the age of 18 that went into remission after 8 years of treatment. Ten years later, he developed sputum-positive tuberculosis and was cured with anti-tubercular treatment. Following this, there was progression of sarcoidosis to stage IV fibrocystic disease. Ten years later, he had massive hemoptysis during which time, aspergilloma was detected in a sarcoid cystic cavity.

Pharmacological review on Centella asiatica: A potential herbal cure-all

Abstract: In recent times, focus on plant research has increased all over the world. Centella asiatica is an important medicinal herb that is widely used in the orient and is becoming popular in the West. Triterpenoid, saponins, the primary constituents of Centella asiatica are manly believed to be responsible for its wide therapeutic actions. Apart from wound healing, the herb is recommended for the treatment of various skin conditions such as leprosy, lupus, varicose ulcers, eczema, psoriasis, diarrhoea, fever, amenorrhea, diseases of the female genitourinary tract and also for relieving anxiety and improving cognition. The present review attempts to provide comprehensive information on pharmacology, mechanisms of action, various preclinical and clinical studies, safety precautions and current research prospects of the herb. At the same time, studies to evaluate the likelihood of interactions with drugs and herbs on simultaneous use, which is imperative for optimal and safe utilization of the herb, are discussed.
