Disruption of cerebellar microzonal organization in GluD2 (GluRδ2) knockout mouse

Abstract: Cerebellar cortex has an elaborate rostrocaudal organization comprised of numerous microzones. Purkinje cells (PCs) in the same microzone show synchronous activity of complex spikes (CSs) evoked by excitatory inputs from climbing fibers (CFs) that arise from neurons in the inferior olive (IO). The synchronous CS activity is considered to depend on electrical coupling among IO neurons and anatomical organization of the olivo-cerebellar projection. To determine how the CF–PC wiring contributes to the formation of microzone, we examined the synchronous CS activities between neighboring PCs in the glutamate receptor δ2 knockout (GluD2 KO) mouse in which exuberant surplus CFs make ectopic innervations onto distal dendrites of PCs. We performed in vivo two-photon calcium imaging for PC populations to detect CF inputs. Neighboring PCs in GluD2 KO mice showed higher synchrony of calcium transients than those in wild-type (control) mice. Moreover, the synchrony in GluD2 KO mice hardly declined with mediolateral separation between PCs up to ~200 μm, which was in marked contrast to the falloff of the synchrony in control mice. The enhanced synchrony was only partially affected by the blockade of gap junctional coupling. On the other hand, transverse CF collaterals in GluD2 KO mice extended beyond the border of microzone and formed locally clustered ectopic synapses onto dendrites of neighboring PCs. Furthermore, PCs in GluD2 KO mice exhibited clustered firing (Cf), the characteristic CF response that was not found in PCs of wild-type mice. Importantly, Cf was often associated with localized calcium transients in distal dendrites of PCs, which are likely to contribute to the enhanced synchrony of calcium signals in GluD2 KO mice. Thus, our results indicate that CF signals in GluD2 KO mice propagate across multiple microzones, and that proper formation of longitudinal olivo-cerebellar projection is essential for the spatiotemporal organization of CS activity in the cerebellum.

Abstract: As a white pigment, titanium oxide is used for cosmetic application. This oxide is well known to have the photo catalytic activity. Therefore a certain degree of sebum is decomposed by the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. In this work, titanium phosphates were prepared with additives (urea, sodium lactate, and glycerin) as a novel white pigment. Their chemical composition, powder properties, photo catalytic activity, moisture retention, and smoothness were studied. These white pigments had little photo catalytic activity. The addition of sodium lactate and glycerin improved the moisture retention of titanium phosphates. The slipping resistance of samples became small by the addition of sodium lactate and glycerin. The roughness of samples became small by heating.

Abstract:

Their chemical composition, powder properties, photo catalytic activity, color phase, and smoothness were studied. The obtained phosphates had little photo catalytic activity. The particle size of phosphate pigments consisted a normal distribution at 2 μm by the hydrothermal treatment for 4 and 8 hours. The slipping resistance of samples became small by the hydrothermal treatment.

Abstract: It is argued that incentives for employees in the public service agencies will necessarily be weak because of the multiple dimensions of products, multiple principals, incomplete contract, and socializing. Some empirical studies refer to incomplete contracting situations as part of the cause of the diminishing of the public sector. This work investigates the effects of privatization and ownership shares on incentive schemes for employees who work for public or privatized firms under incomplete contracting situations. Two main results are obtained. First, the incentive intensity of public firms decreases as the government has more ownership shares, and the social benefit declines. Second, privatized firms offer their employees higher-powered incentive contracts than do public firms.

Abstract: An efficient low-order scaling method is presented for large-scale electronic structure calculations based on the density functional theory using localized basis functions, which directly computes selected elements of the density matrix by a contour integration of the Green function evaluated with a nested dissection approach for resultant sparse matrices. The computational effort of the method scales as O($N(\log_2N)^2$), O($N^{2}$), and O($N^{7/3}$) for one, two, and three dimensional systems, respectively, where $N$ is the number of basis functions. Unlike O($N$) methods developed so far the approach is a numerically exact alternative to conventional O($N^{3}$) diagonalization schemes in spite of the low-order scaling, and can be applicable to not only insulating but also metallic systems in a single framework. It is also demonstrated that the nested algorithm and the well separated data structure are suitable for the massively parallel computation, which enables us to extend the applicability of density functional calculations for large-scale systems together with the low-order scaling.

Abstract: An efficient and robust linear scaling method is presented for large scale {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations of a wide variety of materials including metals. The detailed short range and the effective long range contributions to the electronic structure are taken into account by solving an embedded cluster defined in a Krylov subspace, which provides rapid convergence for not only insulators but also metals. As an illustration of the method, we present a large scale calculation based on density functional theory for a palladium cluster with a single iron impurity.
Improving Lower Bound on Opaque Set for Equilateral Triangle

Abstract: An opaque set (or a barrier) for $U \subseteq \mathbb{R}^2$ is a set $B$ of finite-length curves such that any line intersecting $U$ also intersects $B$. In this paper, we consider the lower bound for the shortest barrier when $U$ is the unit equilateral triangle. The known best lower bound for triangles is the classic one by Jones [Jones,1964], which exhibits that the length of the shortest barrier for any convex polygon is at least the half of its perimeter. That is, for the unit equilateral triangle, it must be at least $3/2$. Very recently, this lower bounds are improved for convex $k$-gons for any $k\geq 4$ [Kawamura et al. 2014], but the case of triangles still lack the bound better than Jones' one. The main result of this paper is to fill this missing piece: We give the lower bound of $3/2 + 5 \cdot 10^{-13}$ for the unit-size equilateral triangle. The proof is based on two new ideas, angle-restricted barriers and a weighted sum of projection-cover conditions, which may be of independently interest.
Comparison of Malignant Bone Treatments for Reuse  [PDF]

Abstract:

The After cancer resection including bone, recently, bone resected with cancer has been considered to be reusable. We newly examined superheated steam treatment for bone reuse and compared it to existing treatments. Forty male C3H/HeN mice were used to establish a model of mandible invasion by oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The mice were sacrificed to harvest the tumor invading mandible bone. The resected tumor with mandible bone was treated by one of four kinds of treatment, no treatment for the control, the Pasteur method, liquid nitrogen treatment, micro-wave treatment and superheated steam treatment. After each treatment, the resected bone was transplanted into a syn-geneic mouse back. Eight weeks after transplantation, the mice were sacrificed and evaluated pathologically. Grafted tumors showed recurrence: 7/7 in the control, 6/8 in the liquid nitrogen treatment, 1/8 the microwave treatment and 2/8 the superheated steam treatment groups. No recurrence, on the other hand, was observed in the Pasteur method (0/8). The Pasteur method is a good treatment to remove malignant cells.
