An Improved Indexing and Matching Method for Mathematical Expressions Based on Inter-Relevant Successive Tree  [PDF]

Abstract:
In recent years, a growing number of math contents are available on the Web. When conventional search engines deal with mathematical expressions, the two-dimen- sion-al structure of mathematical expressions is lost, which results in a low performance of math retrieval. While the retrieval technology specifically designed for mathematical expressions is not mature currently. Aiming at these problems, an improved mathematical expression indexing and matching method was proposed through employing full text index method to deal with the two-dimensional structure of mathematical expressions. Firstly, through the fully consideration of LaTeX formulae’ characteristics, a feature representation method of mathematical expressions and a clustering method of feature keywords were put forward. Then, an improved inter-relevant successive trees index model was applied to the construction of the mathematical expression index, in which the cluster algorithm of mathematical expression features was employed to solve the problem of the quantity growth of the trees in processing large amount of formulae. Finally, the matching algorithms of mathematical expressions were given which provide four query modes called exact matching, compatible matching, sub-expression matching and fuzzy matching. In browser/server mode, 110027 formulae were used as experimental samples. The index file size was 29.02 Mb. The average time of retrieval was 1.092 seconds. The experimental result shows the effectiveness of the method.
Neurospora NADP-glutamate dehydrogenases and its expression in E. coli and transgenic plants

Abstract: Genes of NADP-glutamate dehydrogenase (NADP-GDH) were cloned from Neurospora intermedia (Ni), N. crassa (Nc), and N. sitophila (Ns). The sequences showed a high degree of homology at the cDNA and protein level. The three GDH genes were cloned into pET30a and expressed in E. coli. The activity assay of purified GDH showed that the Ni-GDH had a higher activity and affinity to ammonia than Ns-GDH, and Nc-GDH. The Km value of Ni-GDH ranges from 0.3 to 0.45 mmol/L. Nigdh gene was transformed to Nicotiana bethamiana plants. The transformed plants grew much better in low nitrogen media than the only ROKII vector transformed control.
Distribution characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine syndromes and their elements in people with subhealth fatigue

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes and their elements in people with subhealth fatigue.Methods: The TCM symptoms in line with the diagnostic criteria of subhealth fatigue status were collected by clinical investigations and using information collection form based on TCM four diagnostic methods. Referred to Clinical Guidelines of Chinese Medicine on Subhealth and other related standards, the syndrome type was identified in accordance with clinical symptoms of each patient with subhealth fatigue by two physicians. The data of syndrome differentiation were analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis.Results: There were 81 syndrome types from 495 cases of subhealth fatigue. There were 24 syndrome types after separation, and the top ten were liver stagnation and spleen deficiency, stagnation of liver qi, hyperactivity of liver fire, disharmony between liver and stomach, damp obstruction due to spleen deficiency, deficiency of both heart and spleen, yin deficiency of liver and kidney, yang deficiency of spleen and kidney, stagnation of gallbladder and disturbance of phlegm, and internal disturbance of phlegm-heat. There were 17 syndrome elements, including seven disease location elements and ten disease nature elements. The disease location elements were liver, spleen, kidney, stomach, heart, gallbladder and lung. The disease nature elements were qi stagnation, qi deficiency, exuberance of fire (heat), damp obstruction, phlegm obstruction, yin deficiency, adverse flow of qi, yang deficiency, blood deficiency, and blood stasis.Conclusion: Syndrome types of subhealth fatigue involve in deficiency syndrome, excess syndrome, and mixture of deficiency and excess syndromes. The syndrome elements of disease location involve five zang organs and two fu organs, and the liver and spleen were the most frequently involved organs. The syndrome elements of disease nature involve deficiency and excess. Qi stagnation is most frequently involved in the excess syndrome, and qi deficiency is most frequently involved in the deficiency syndrome.
A perspective of developing syndrome diagnostic criteria based on syndrome factors and combination of disease in modern medicine system and syndrome in traditional Chinese medicine system

Abstract: : Syndrome differentiation treatment is the traditional model of diagnosis and treatment of diseases in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). To establish scientific diagnostic criteria of TCM syndrome is one of the key points in TCM study. In this paper, the basic models of the relevant diagnostic criteria of TCM syndrome and existed problems were reviewed. The authors pointed out the advantages of establishing diagnostic criteria of TCM syndrome based on TCM syndrome factors and combination of disease in Western medicine system and TCM syndrome, in which not only the characteristics of the disease in Western medicine were considered, but also the complexity and flexibility of syndrome identification and convenient application in clinical practice were resolved. The basic model and frame of the above diagnostic criteria and the procedures and methods used in developing the diagnostic criteria were also described and discussed.
Effects of Xiaopi Yishen herbal extract granules in treatment of fatigue-predominant subhealth due to liver-qi stagnation and spleen-qi deficiency: a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled and double-blind clinical trial

Abstract: Background: The demand for effective intervention for subhealth conditions is growing with increasing numbers of people being in a state of subhealth with a poor quality of life. Future research and evaluation of the treatment methods for subhealth conditions from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may provide an important direction for developing effective management of these conditions.Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Xiaopi Yishen herbal extract granules (XPYS-HEG), a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine for relieving fatigue and promoting a cheerful spirit for the treatment of people with fatigue-predominant subhealth due to liver-qi stagnation and spleen-qi deficiency. Design, setting participants and interventions: A multi-center, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical study was undertaken. The study period was 18 weeks, including 6 weeks for intervention and 12 weeks for follow-up. Participants were recruited from medical center and outpatient clinics of three hospitals in China, i.e. Xiaotangshan Hospital of Beijing, the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of TCM and the Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning University of TCM. Two hundred participants who met the criteria of fatigue-predominant subhealth and liver-qi stagnation and spleen-qi deficiency in TCM were allocated randomly to the treatment group (XPYS, n=100) and control group (placebo, n=100). Main outcome measures: The total score of Fatigue Scale-14 (FS-14) was used to evaluate the fatigue status of subjects and the extent of liver-qi stagnation and spleen-qi deficiency syndrome was also recorded. Results: Three cases in the XPYS group withdrew from the trial. There were 200 subjects who entered to full analysis set (FAS) analysis and 197 subjects fitted in the per-protocol set (PPS) analysis. (1) According to the score changes of FS-14, the effectiveness rates in the XPYS and placebo group were as follows: 14.0% vs 9.0% (FAS) and 14.4% vs 9.0% (PPS) for complete remission, 19.0% vs 15.0% (FAS) and 19.6% vs 15.0% (PPS) for obvious effects, 39.0% vs 26.0% (FAS) and 39.2% vs 26.0% (PPS) for effective, and 72.0% vs 50.0% (FAS) and 73.2% vs 50.0% (PPS) for complete efficacy. The efficacy of XPYS-HEG was superior to the placebo statistically (P<0.05). Resonant surface plasmons of a metal nanosphere can be considered in the way of propagating surface plasmons

Abstract: Assuming that the resonant surface plasmons on a spherical nanoparticle is formed by standing waves of two counter-propagating surface plasmon waves along the surface, by using Mie theory simulation, we find that the dispersions of surface plasmon resonant modes supported by silver nanospheres match that of the surface plasmons on a semi-infinite medium-silver interface very well. This suggests that the resonant surface plasmons of a metal nanosphere can be treated as a propagating surface plasmon wave.
Mathematical Expression Extraction in Text Fields of Documents Based on HMM  [PDF]

Abstract: Aiming at the problem that the mathematical expressions in unstructured text fields of documents are hard to be extracted automatically, rapidly and effectively, a method based on Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is proposed. Firstly, this method trained the HMM model through employing the symbol combination features of mathematical expressions. Then, some preprocessing works such as removing labels and filtering words were carried out. Finally, the preprocessed text was converted into an observation sequence as the input of the HMM model to determine which is the mathematical expression and extracts it. The experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively extract the mathematical expressions from the text fields of documents, and also has the relatively high accuracy rate and recall rate.

Estimation of Genetic Parameters for 305 Days Milk Yields and Calving Interval in Xinjiang Brown Cattle  [PDF]

Abstract: This study was conducted to estimate variance components and genetic parameters for 305 days mature equivalent milk yields (MEM) and calving interval (CAI) of registered Xinjiang Brown cattle. The total records were 3940 including 2579 for 305-day MEM and 1970 for CAI, which were collected from Xinjiang Urumqi Cattle Breeding farm in China with calving records from 1990 to 2008. Genetic parameters were obtained by multiple trait derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood (MTDFREML) using animal model. The model included year, season, parity and calving interval of calving for 305 days MEM, and year, season and parity of birth for CAI as fixed effects. Heritability for 305 days MEM was moderate (0.39) and in the same range of parameters estimated in management systems with medium production levels. Heritability of calving interval was small (0.02) as fertility traits for Xinjiang Brown cattle. Estimates of genetic and environmental correlations between 305 days MEM and CAI were 0.47 and 0.37, respectively. Estimates of genetic variation and heritability indicated that selection would result in genetic improvement of production traits. Estimates of both heritability and genetic variation for CAI were small, which indicates that genetic improvement would be difficult.

Abstract: Introduction: The primary treatment aim for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is to relieve overall symptoms which can significantly impair the patient’s quality of life (QOL); however, it generally requires a high pill burden that may be improved by administration of combinatorial formulations. Thus, the effectiveness of alverine citrate and simeticone combination (ACS) for global symptom relief for IBS was investigated in this non-interventional study. Patients and Methods: ROME III IBS patients (n = 640; 52.3% male: mean age: 43.6 ± 12.5 years) with abdominal pain and discomfort ≥60 of 0-100 visual analogue scale (VAS) were included in a prospective, multicenter, non-interventional study at 26 Chinese sites from December 2010 to January 2012. Patients received alverine citrate (60 mg) with simeticone (300 mg) (ACS) 3× daily for 4 weeks. Pain/discomfort and bloating/distension were assessed by VAS. Global symptoms and QOL were assessed by 7-point and 5-point Likert scales, respectively. Post-treatment bowel function was assessed by Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) and treatment-related adverse events (AEs) were recorded. Results: Of 640 patients, 540 (84.4%) completed the study, and 100 (15.6%) withdrew. In total, 87.5% reported bloating at baseline. After 4-week ACS treatment, 89.1% reported global symptom improvement. Furthermore, 4-week ACS treatment reduced pain and bloated VAS scores significantly from 78.4 ± 9.9 to 32.1 ± 21.0 and from 63.2 ± 27.2 to 22.6 ± 20.9, respectively (both p < 0.001), decreased diarrhea or constipation occurrence from 67.2% to 10.2% (p < 0.001), and reduced IBS impact on QOL with only 2 treatment-related AEs. Conclusion: Routine clinical administration of ACS for IBS over a 4-week period provides effective relief of IBS symptoms and improves QOL in IBS patients.
