Influences of Solar Cycles on Earthquakes  [PDF]
Marilia Tavares, Anibal Azevedo
Natural Science (NS) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ns.2011.36060
Abstract: This paper inspects possible influence of solar cycles on earthquakes through of statistical analyses. We also discussed the mechanism that would drive the occurrence of increasing of earthquakes during solar maxima. The study was based on worldwide earthquakes events during approximately four hundred years (1600-2010).The increase of earthquakes events followed the Maxima of Solar cycle, and also depends on the tectonic plate location. From 1600 until 1645 events increased during the Maxima in some of the tectonic plates as Pacific, Arabian and South America. The earthquakes analyzed during two grand solar minima, the Maunder (1645-1720) and the Dalton (1790-1820) showed a decrease in the number of earth-quakes and the solar activity. It was observed during these minima a significant number of events at specific geological features. After the last minima (Dalton) the earthquakes pattern increased with solar maxima. The calculations showed that events increasing during solar maxima most in the Pacific, South America or Arabian until 1900. Since there were few records during these three centuries we needed addi-tional analysis on modern data. We took the last four solar cycles events (1950-2010) and made similar calculations. The results agreed with the former calculations. It might be that the mecha-nism for the Sun-Earth connection relies on the solar wind speed. In both records (1600-1900) and (1950-2010) the results showed a significant increase in earthquakes events in some of the tectonic plates linked to solar maxima. The So-lar wind energy striking the Earth’s magneto-sphere affects the entire environment because the pressure on the region increases and the magnetosphere shrinks sometimes four Earth’s radii. This sudden compression causes earth-quakes in specific plates. During the times of solar minima the pressure from the solar wind on the earth decreases, then the magnetosphere expands and earthquakes happen in a different pattern according to the geological feature on earth’s surface less frequently. Solar driven events include coronal mass ejections (CME) and coronal holes, which are at a maximum during the descending phase of solar activity. The tectonic are important because there is he-terogeneity in the crust and the tectonic stress depends on each region. The geo-effectiveness of solar wind from a coronal hole only depends on the position of the hole relative to the Earth and for the CMEs an additional factor is their velocity. The influence of these solar events could be detected from electromagnetic varia-tions on the ground prior
The Bird Community in a Threatened Coastal Lagoon in Southeastern Brazil  [PDF]
Davi Castro Tavares, Salvatore Siciliano
Open Journal of Ecology (OJE) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/oje.2014.43012

We provide a list of bird species for Ribeira lagoon, a protected area in Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Data were obtained in monthly surveys in points along a continuous transect, between August 2008 and July 2009, and 21 ad libitum observations. In total, 174 species were listed, including 121 land birds and 53 waterbirds. Of these, 11 are considered threatened at regional level. Waterbird richness was significantly higher in the dry season (April to September) than in the rainy season (October to March), whereas land bird richness remained constant. However, land bird richness varied throughout the year, with the highest value in February 2009 (77 species) and the lowest in May 2009 (41 species). The species listed account for 23% of the total of 745 bird species listed for Rio de Janeiro, and for 49% of 108 waterbirds recorded for the state.

Análisis de abundancia, distribución y tallas de tiburones capturados por pesca artesanal en el parque nacional archipiélago los roques, Venezuela
Interciencia , 2009,
Abstract: relative abundance, distribution and length structure of sharks were examined based on specimens caught during 2001 and 2002 by the artisanal shark fishery from los roques archipelago national park. a total of 13 species of sharks were reported during the study period, in which carcharhinus limbatus (47.9%) and c. perezi (37.7%) were the most common frequently caught. ginglymostoma cirratum, c. falciformis and negaprion brevirostris together comprised 10.7% of the shark catch. the fishing effort was primarily concentrated during the third quarter in both years of the study period, and in the depth strata of < 10 m. general mean cpue showed that the most abundant species were c. limbatus (2,76 ind 100-anz-1 ± 2,43 ds) and c. perezi (2,35 ind 100-anz-1 ± 2,17 ds). c. limbatus catches were constituted by individuals measuring between 53 and 218 cm tl. however, 96.5% of those caught were juveniles captured within the central lagoon of the archipelago. the catches of c. perezi were represented by individuals with sizes between 67 and 270 cm tl, and the 82.6% of them were juveniles captured in shallow water zones near the islands. the present study showed that the los roques archipelago is an important nursery area for the species c. limbatus and c. perezi. the protection of the nursery areas of sharks, as a conservation measure, should be promoted in the study area.
Do Surrealismo em David Lynch
Tavares, Mirian;
ARS (S?o Paulo) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-53202009000200008
Abstract: surrealism, as the art of its time, proposes a new aesthetics, one that is able to extract the beautiful from the absurd and to establish the swerve from the standard, from which, in fact, the real comes through. through the analysis of some works by david lynch, of breton and soupault's les champs magnétiques, and of breton's poisson soluble, i will attempt to show the relevance of the surrealist designation for the work of the american filmmaker. lynch, like the surrealists, builds a dialectic operation between the rational and the irrational. while operating in the artistic field towards absolute irrationality, lynch does not deny its role in society. it is my belief that the director, as the surrealists, has managed to find a balance between the two ways of being in the world: rational and irrational; by playing with their antitheses. the pleasure of the surrealist game is to go to the depths of the unconscious and return with sufficient material to make a work of art out of it.
O Processo do Rei: a história no palco do cinema
Tavares, Mirian;
ARS (S?o Paulo) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-53202011000100008
Abstract: this text discusses the relationship between cinema and theatre starting with the concept of mise en scéne. what joins together and separates these two artistic forms? how has cinema built its own mise en scéne throughout its history while resorting mostly to editing? in order to thoroughly examine the issues raised by this text, i will analyze jo?o mário grilo's movie: o processo do rei (the lawsuit against the king) (1990). based on the lawsuit against dom afonso vi, the director was able to remain faithful to the historical time, the seventeenth century, but at the same time give it a contemporary feel, while exploring eternal and cyclical aspects of the actual story. the cinema, in this movie, works as a stage where the story reveals the directing, which history books habitually hide.
Lembrar, esquecer, censurar
Tavares, Rui;
Estudos Avan?ados , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40141999000300007
Abstract: the main goal of this article is to describe in a detailed way the connections between power, censorship and memory, during the final stage of pombal's regime. its mains source are the written records of the real mesa censória (royal censorship board) the institution of censorship that pombal created to replace the tripartite censorship that lasted for more than two centuries. a voyage to some of its reports will allow us to understand their reports as an attempt to control what should be remembered and what should be forgotten, but also in what ways it should be remembered or forgotten. finally, these reports will be understood as documents that record an intellectual task; objects for reading and interpretation, and part of a broader dialogue between power and culture.
A vida depois da vida: Reabilita??o psicológica e social na transplanta??o de órg?os
Análise Psicológica , 2004,
Abstract: organ transplant is undoubtedly a deep physical and psychological change in any person?s life, which requires adaptation resources and a profound reequilibrium. this paper undertakes a theoretical reflection about the reality of organ transplant in its psychological and social rehabilitation dimensions. we trace the path of adaptation to the disease and through the consent and motivation stages of a transplant. we touch also on the post-surgery and associated emotions, the construction of a phantasmatic representation of the donor, and provide a framework for the transplanted person in its family and social settings. we intend to reach some reflections about the gained quality of life and the bio-psycho-social process of becoming a new being again.
