Abstract: the objective of this qualitative study was to analyze the technical nursing course of the ceará school of public health (brazil), made possible by the professionalization project of nursing workers, from the view of supervising nurses in order to know the course's strengths and weaknesses. a focus group made up of 10 course supervisors was carried out in february of 2007. discourse content analysis made evident that the course allowed for nursing technical competency development. the problematization methodology and the quality of the teaching-learning resources were among its positive aspects. the main difficulties pointed out were related to the course logistics, the lack of municipal support, and limited internship opportunities. we conclude, however, that this educational strategy must be implemented into permanent education as an effective way to ensure professional reflection and significant changes in health care work processes.

Abstract: we establish a sufficient condition for injectivity in a class of mappings defined on open connected subsets of rn , for arbitrary n. the result relates solvability of the appropriate vector fields with injectivity of the mapping and extends a result proved by the first author for n < 3 . furthermore, we extend the result to connected paracompact smooth oriented manifolds and show that the convexity condition imposes strong topological restrictions on the manifold.

Abstract: in panama, species of the genus lutzomyia are vectors of american cutaneous leishmaniasis (acl). there is no recent ecological information that may be used to develop tools for the control of this disease. thus, the goal of this study was to determine the composition, distribution and diversity of lutzomyia species that serve as vectors of acl. sandfly sampling was conducted in forests, fragmented forests and rural environments, in locations with records of acl. lutzomyia gomezi, lutzomyia panamensis and lutzomyia trapidoi were the most widely distributed and prevalent species. analysis of each sampling point showed that the species abundance and diversity were greatest at points located in the fragmented forest landscape. however, when the samples were grouped according to the landscape characteristics of the locations, there was a greater diversity of species in the rural environment locations. the kruskal wallis analysis of species abundance found that lu. gomezi and lu. trapidoi were associated with fragmented environments, while lu. panamensis, lutzomyia olmeca bicolor and lutzomyia ylephiletor were associated with forested environments. therefore, we suggest that human activity influences the distribution, composition and diversity of the vector species responsible for leishmaniasis in panama.

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762011000800025
Abstract: lutzomyia longipalpis is the primary vector of the parasite responsible for visceral leishmaniasis in the americas. in the present study, lu. longipalpis was found in a domiciliary area in limón, a district in capira, a region in which cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic in panama. previously, this species has been found in a humid forest in this same region. finding lu. longipalpis in domiciliary areas indicates that this species may be adapting to new habitats and that it may play a role in the transmission of leishmaniasis in panama.

Abstract: The use of natural enemies represents an important strategy in programs of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Asopinae predators are reared with alternative prey, but supplementary plant may enhance the fecundity and longevity of their females. The objective of this research was to evaluate the development and reproduction of the predator Brontocoris tabidus Signoret, 1852 (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) fed with Tenebrio molitor L., 1785 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) pupae in a Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden (Myrtaceae) plant in the field. The duration and survival of the nymphal stage of B. tabidus were 32.07 ± 8.95 days and 77.00 ± 0.42%, respectively with 15.55 ± 8.19 egg masses, 603.00 ± 379.20 eggs and 387.45 ± 291.40 nymphs per female of this predator while longevity of its males and females was 119.80 ± 32.80 and 160.20 ± 42.13 days, respectively. Better results with E. grandis plant in the field and the fact that B. tabidus will be adapted at release time show that this predator should be reared in these conditions.
