Strategie predatorie di Crocidura leucodon (Hermann, 1780) in condizioni controllate: dati preliminari

Abstract: Lo scopo principale di questo lavoro è stato quello di verificare, in condizioni controllate, il comportamento predatorio esibito da Crocidura leucodon (Hermann,1780) nei confronti di diverse specie di Artropodi, nonché la capacità di vanificare le difese chimiche di alcune di esse. Le prede utilizzate appartengono a numerosi ordini di Artropodi (Coleotteri, Chilopodi, Isopodi, Emitteri) sistemati in terrari di allevamento in cella termica (T = 22-24° C; L/D: 18/6). Le crocidure (n=2) provenienti dal Massicio del Pollino (1200 m s.l.m.; ottobre 2002) sono state allevate in terrario a T ambiente. Le osservazioni (Tmedio oss. 45 minuti), registrate con l?ausilio di una videocamera, sono state condotte in laboratorio dal 29/10/02 al 06/03/03, utilizzando arene sperimentali collegate al terrario di allevamento delle crocidure. I test sono stati condotti sia con gli animali nutriti che a digiuno. Gli esemplari di Crocidura leucodon nutriti hanno mostrato una marcata preferenza per specie di Carabidi non protette, Diplopodi (ignorati invece da altre specie di Soricidae), Isopodi e larve di Coleotteri, mentre i Carabidi con difese chimiche, o loro mimi, nelle fasi iniziali dell?esperimento venivano annusati ma mai attaccati. Le crocidure a digiuno, al contrario, consumavano qualsiasi preda venisse loro offerta, attaccando anche grossi carabidi. La latenza di attacco registrata nei confronti di prede non protette è risultata essere sempre notevolmente inferiore rispetto a quella di specie protette con ?warning colors? e ?warning odors?, e che presentano, inoltre, la caratteristica del movimento lento (sindrome della difesa chimica o CDS; Whitman et al. 1985) attraverso cui riescono efficacemente a difendersi dagli attacchi dei predatori naturali. Dopo una fase che si può ritenere di apprendimento, le crocidure hanno iniziato ad attaccare e consumare anche prede quali i Coleotteri bombardieri (Brachinus spp.), colpendoli ripetutamente sino all?esaurimento delle loro secrezioni di chinoni e acqua ad una T di 100° C espulse dalle ghiandole pigidiali. I dati preliminari sembrano suggerire una notevole plasticità comportamenetale in Crocidura leucodon, sicuramente non stereotipata ma modificabile in relazione alle differenti prede e all?esperienza.

Abstract: Some of the most relevant aspects of the feeding behaviour of the rat (Rattus norvegicus, Berkenhout, 1769) were examined with particular interest in the data collected on wild rats and in natural environments. The rat is considered as an omnivore and generalist species, but both in the wild and in the laboratory marked individual differences were recorded in food preferences and diet spectrum, which probably allow the natural populations to exploit a great number of habitat resources. A number of causes were identified as responsible of these differences: early pup differentiation; mother's and conspecifics' influences, etc. The importance of animal food in the rat diet is also variable. The diet of non-commensal rat colonies was examined with special reference to the predatory behaviour, which is a common habit in natural populations; furthermore the insorgence of "local traditions" such as the Mollusc predation was considered. The hypothesis of social transmission of this feeding habit, widespread in the Po river Basin and Delta, was discussed and confirmed. The hoarding behaviour, well studied under laboratory conditions, was rarely recorded in the wild. It is supposed to be a useful mechanism that the rat uses to cope with particular conditions (e.g. surplus of food, lactating females) but this species cannot be defined as a "natural hoarder". The degree of neophobia is variable in populations that interact with man and it is practically absent in non-commensal populations. This confirms that it is a defensive strategy resulting from the commensal habit of the rat and not a fixed behavioural characteristic of this rodent species. The stealing of food between animals, kleptoparasitism, was frequently observed in confined rat groups in laboratory but rarely described in the wild. It is compared with the "worker-parasite" relationship supposed to be a kind of division of labour. The most important components of the foraging behaviour of the rat, are: the constant sampling of al1 the potential foods that brings the populations to a noteworthy adaptability to the change of available resources; the social interactions among individuals (mother-pups, adult-adult) that are very important in influencing the food preferences and, eventually, the food avoidance; the use of feeding-places, which is considered as a fundamental trait of the foraging behaviour of the rat, working as an information-centre of the animals. Current status of Myoxids (Mammalia: Rodentia) in Calabria (Southern Italy)

Abstract: Four species of Myoxids are presently known to live in the southern region of the Italian peninsula: Eliomys quercinus, Dryomys nitedula, Myoxus glis, Muscardinus avellanarius. The only paleontological evidence, dating from the Würm period, refers to E. quercinus, M. avellanarius and M. glis, which were found in caves of the Northern Thyrrenian Coast. The historical data concerning the Calabrian Myoxids, do not include the presence of Dryomys nitedula which was recorded for the first time in the Aspromonte Massif only in 1964 (von Lehmann, 1964). The actual geographical distribution of D. nitedula in Southern Italy seems to include the Calabrian and Basilicata mountains. The ecological distribution of D. nitedula seems to be tied to the presence of beech woods from 1300 m to 1800 m above sea level. Present knowledge concerning Calabrian Glirids is very scanty and fragmentary since no specific studies have been carried out. Most available data refer to Muscardinus avellanarius, a species frequently found in bird of prey pellets (mainly froin Tyto alba) from sea level to 1300 m a.s.l., both in the sclerophyll and in the decidous biomes. By contrast, few data dealing with Eliomys quercinus exist probably due to a fragmented distribution within this region. Myoxus glis seems to be frequent and continous, in areas ranging from sea level to wooded mountains. Riassunto Stato delle conoscenze sui Mioxidi (Rodentia, Mammalia) in Calabria - In Calabria, la regione più meridionale della penisola italiana, sono presenti quattro specie di Mioxidi: Eliomys quercinus, Dryomys nitedula, Myoxus glis e Muscardinus avellanarius. Gli scarsi dati paleontologici risalenti a1 Würm, di caverne della costa Tirrenica settentrionale segnalano la presenza di E. quercinus, M. glis e M. avellanarius. Anche i dati storici, non riportano la presenza di D. nitedula, rinvenuto in Aspromonte solo nel 1964 (von Lehmann, 1964). La distribuzione geografica attuale del Driomio in Italia meridionale comprende le montagne calabresi e della Basilicata in cui sembra legato alle faggete a quote superiori ai 1300 metri slm. Le conoscenze attuali sui Mioxidi in Calabria sono piuttosto scarse e frammentarie poiché non sono stati svolti studi specifici. La maggior parte dei dati disponibili riguardano il Moscardino, specie che si rinviene di frequente nei rigetti di rapaci (in particolare di Tyto alba) dal livello del mare fino a 1300 metri slm, sia nel bioma delle sclerofille che in quello delle caducifoglie. Abstract: The present study reports the distribution of some small mammals species, scarcely known in Calabria. The range distribution of Sorex minutus, Crocidura leucodon, Crocidura suaveolens and Arvicola terrestris is now extended to the farthest limits of the peninsula. Furthermore the presence of Dryomys nitedula in the massive Sila Mountains is reported. Riassunto Vengono segnalate le recenti acquisizioni sulla distribuzione, fino ad ora scarsamente nota, di Sorex minutus, Crocidura leucodon, Crocidura suaveolens, Dryomys nitedula ed Arvicola terrestris in Calabria.

Abstract: In the past few decades the scientific community has been recognizing the paramount role of the cell microenvironment in determining cell behavior. In parallel, the study of human stem cells for their potential therapeutic applications has been progressing constantly. The use of advanced technologies, enabling one to mimic the in vivo stem cell microenviroment and to study stem cell physiology and physio-pathology, in settings that better predict human cell biology, is becoming the object of much research effort. In this review we will detail the most relevant and recent advances in the field of biosensors and micro- and nano-technologies in general, highlighting advantages and disadvantages. Particular attention will be devoted to those applications employing stem cells as a sensing element.

Abstract: corynespora cassiicola (berk. & m.a. curtis) c.t. wei is the causal agent for target spot on several economically important crops. so, studies on the c. cassiicola isolates preservation are necessary to maintain mycelium growth and sporulation, during experiments. the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of three isolates preserving methods: castellani, periodical transference, and mineral oil, during six months of storage. the evaluations were carried out by analyzing mycelial growth on potato-dextrose-agar medium. it was observed that mycelial growth was higher in the periodical transference method, sporulation was a little higher in the castellani method, and all methods preserved isolates pathogenicity. thus, for that phythopatogen, the castellani method is the most recommended one.
