Basic Methods for Motion Detection in Images Sequence

Abstract: In the physical world, motion segmentation of images sequences is based on visual motion perception. This does not depend on prior interpretation or recognition of shape and form. However, it does depend on motion information (spatiotemporal object-environment relations). It is generally recognized that the analysis of moving objects proceeds in four stages: The first is the detection of variations in intensity over time in the environment. The second is the segmentation of moving areas and objects masks building. The third is the estimation of motion parameters. The fourth one is the 3D motion interpretation. In the study, we are dealing with detection and region-based segmentation methods. These methods may easily extend to estimate motion parameters. Here we are mainly concerned with comparing studies using determinist and stochastic modelling (images difference, maximum likelihood detector and Markov random field model) to detect the moving objects masks.
Matrix Inversion and Optical Flow Computation

Abstract: The optical flow field is an approximation to the 2D motion field, which is produced by projecting the 3D scene velocity into the image. In order to be useful for tasks such as surface structure recovery or the estimation of viewer or object motion, the optical flow has to be dense and accurate. Optical flow computation is an important and challenging problem in the analysis of image sequences. It is a difficult and computationally expensive task and is an ill-posed problem, which expresses itself as the aperture problem. However, optical flow vectors can be estimated by using regularization methods, in which additional constraints functions are introduced. In this study we propose to improve optical flow estimation by including colour information as constraints functions in the optimization process. The proposed technique based an a simple matrix inversion using colour information as constraints functions in the optimization process and it has shown encouraging results.

Abstract: Motion computation is an important and challenging problem in the analysis of image sequences. Motion computation plays an important role in many applications such as target tracking and movement/change detection in surveillance systems; in compressing video images, if we have already compressed I (t-1), we know much about I (t). Typical approach for building a predicted image for I (t), based on I (t-1) etc. There are numerous other applications. From a sequence of images we can only estimate an approximation of the image motion field called optical flow. Motion estimation and computation in images sequence is a difficult and computationally expensive task. The computation of optical flow is an ill-posed problem, which expresses itself as the aperture problem. However, motion vectors can be estimated by using differential methods, where optic flow estimation is based on computing spatial and temporal image derivatives. A typical way to overcome the ill-posed ness problems of differential optic flow methods consists of the use of smoothing techniques and smoothness assumption as a regularization methods, in which additional constraints functions are introduced. In this research we propose to improve optical flow estimation by including colour information as constraints functions in the optimization process. The proposed technique has shown encouraging results.

Abstract: After setting some hypotheses, a conceptual model and system architecture were developed to describe the population dynamics and interactions of mosquitoes (genus Culex) and American crows, which were chosen as the main actors in the simulation. Based on a mathematical compartment model used to simulate the population dynamics, an operational prototype was developed for the Southern part of Quebec (Canada). The system allows users to modify the parameters of the model, to select various climate and larviciding scenarios, to visualize on a digital map the progression (on a weekly or daily basis) of the infection in and around the crows' roosts and to generate graphs showing the evolution of the populations. The basic units for visualisation are municipalities.In all likelihood this system might be used to support short term decision-making related to WNV vector control measures, including the use of larvicides, according to climatic scenarios. Once fully calibrated in several real-life contexts, this promising approach opens the door to the study and management of other zoonotic diseases such as Lyme disease.The WNV is a flavivirus which was isolated for the first time in 1937. Its name comes from the district of West Nile in Uganda. It was detected in human, birds and mosquitoes in Egypt at the beginning of the fifties, and has then been found in various European countries [1]. It is however only with the important 1996 human epidemic in Bucharest, Romania, that WNV became a concern for public health. Moreover, there is no specific treatment of the disease and no vaccine is yet available for humans. The WNV was detected on the American continent in 1999 and more specifically in New York [2]. In Canada, WNV reached southern Ontario in 2001, while the first human cases were detected in August 2002 [3].WNV made its appearance in Quebec in July 2002. Amplification of seismic ground motion in the Tunis basin: Numerical BEM simulations vs experimental evidences

Abstract: This paper aims at the analysis of seismic wave amplification in a deep alluvial basin in the city of Tunis in Tunisia. This sedimentary basin is 3000m wide and 350m deep. Since the seismic hazard is significant in this area, the depth of the basin and the strong impedance ratio raise the need for an accurate estimation of seismic motion amplification. Various experimental investigations were performed in previous studies to characterize site effects. The Boundary Element Method is considered herein to assess the parameter sensitivity of the amplification process and analyse the prevailing phenomena. The various frequencies of maximum amplification are correctly estimated by the BEM simulations. The maximum amplification level observed in the field is also well retrieved by the numerical simulations but, due to the sensitivity of the location of maximum amplification in space, the overall maximum amplification has to be considered. The influence of the wave-field incidence and material damping is also discussed.
