Abstract: Ependymomas are relatively uncommon and present with a spectrum of biological and clinical characteristics that make specific recommendations regarding their treatment difficult and assignment of prognostic factors controversial. The case of fourth ventricular anaplastic epednymoma in a four-year-old child is reported in which the initial presentation was deterioration of the level of consciousness secondary to acute obstructive hydrocephalus. An initial insertion of a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt (V-P) to deal with the acute intracranial hypertension was done. Subsequently, sub-occipital craniectomy and sub-total resection of the tumour were performed successfully. Post-operative radiotherapy was also undertaken on the patient. The pertinent literature is reviewed. At one year follow up our patient had clinically improved with no signs of recurrence. The most important prognostic factors are tumour grade and the presence of residual tumour on post operative imaging studies. A median survival of 31 months is noted in children with infratentorial ependymomas and one year survival is quoted as 81%.
Chronic subdural haematoma: review of 96 cases attending the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra

Abstract: Background: Chronic subdural haematoma is not uncommon in Africa. Early diagnosis and treatment is satisfying. Simpler operative procedures are generally effective. This review is meant to find out the situation regarding the condition in Ghana. Study design: A retrospective study of patients with chronic subdural haematoma admitted to and treated by the Neurosurgical Unit of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital between January 1995 and December 1998 was undertaken. The case notes, computerise axial tomography (CT) scans and operative records were reviewed and the relevant data extracted. Incomplete records were excluded. Results: 96 patients were involved. The mean age of the patients was 46.9 years, with male to female ratio of 16: 1. The most common presenting feature was headache (64.7%). Time of injury to presentation was about 2 months. 81 were treated using burr hole and drainage and 15 by craniotomy and stripping of membranes. Eighty four were treated under general anaesthesia. Two were reoperated on because of recurrent bleed. There were two (2) deaths. Ninety patients had a Glasgow Outcome Score of good at the time of their last review. Conclusion: The data suggests that burr hole and closed drainage is a very effective method of managing CSDH.
Effect of Heat Treatment Processes on the Mechanical Properties of Medium Carbon Steel  [PDF]

Abstract: The importance of various form of heat treatment operations on medium carbon steel in order to forester the problem that may arise in making a wrong choice of these steel materials or faulty heat treatment operations which may give rise to serious disruption in terms of human safety, higher cost and untimely failure of the machine components is of great concern. The mechanical properties such as ductility, toughness, strength, hardness and tensile strength can easily be modified by heat treating the medium carbon steel to suit a particular design purpose. Tensile specimens were produced from medium carbon steel and were subjected to various forms of heat treatment processes like annealing, normalizing, hardening and tempering. The stiffness, ductility, ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and hardness of the heat treated samples were observed from their stress-strain curve. The value of the yield strength (σy) was observed to be higher for the tempered specimen possibly as a result of the grain re-arrangement, followed by the hardened, normalized and annealed specimens. The value of the ultimate tensile strength (σu) were also observed to be in the order; hardened> tempered>normalized>annealed.

Abstract: In this research work, an investigation was made on the mechanical properties of E-glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites filled by various filler materials. Composites filled with varying concentrations of fly ash, aluminum oxide (Al2O3), magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) and hematite powder were fabricated by standard method and the mechanical properties such as ultimate tensile strength, impact strength and hardness of the fabricated composites were studied. The test results show that composites filled by 10% volume Mg(OH)2 exhibited maximum ultimate tensile strength and hardness. Fly ash filled composites exhibited maximum impact strength.

Abstract: Aluminium metal matrix composites are finding increased applications in many areas. Adding of the third element to the metal matrix make the composite hybrid. This paper presents the study on the surface roughness characteristics of a hybrid aluminium metal matrix (Al6061-SiC-Al2O3) composites. The experimental studies were carried out on a lathe. The composites were prepared using the liquid metallurgy technique, in which 3, 6 and 9 wt % of particulates SiC and Al2O3 were dispersed in the base matrix. The obtained cast composites were carefully machined. The characteristics that influence the surface roughness such as feed rate, depth of cut and cutting speed were studied, which made the analysis come to a conclusion that the surface roughness is increases with the increase of feed rate and it reduces the surface roughness with the increase of cutting speed.

Abstract: A cost-effective component minimized embedded controlled Z-source inverter for induction motor drive is presented. The proposed topology combines the advantages of a traditional four-switch three-phase inverter with the advantages of the z impedance network (two inductors in series and two X connected capacitors). This new topology, besides the self-boost property, has low switch count and it can operate as a buck-boost inverter. As a result, the new embedded controlled reduced switch Z-source inverter system provides ride through capability during voltage sags, reduces line harmonics, improves power factor, reliability and extends output voltage range. Analysis, simulation and experiment result will be presented to demonstrate these new features.

Abstract: Two new Compton Scatter Tomography modalities, which are aimed at imaging hidden structures in bulk matter for industrial non-destructive control (or testing) and for medical diagnostics are shown to be based on the solutions of a special class of Chebyshev integral transforms. Besides their remarkable analytic properties, they can be inverted by existing methods which lend themselves nicely to numerical treatment and provide convergent, stable and fast computation algorithms. The existence of explicit inversion formulas implies that viable new imaging techniques can be developed, which may take over the current ones in a near future.

Abstract:

Geotourism in Kutch has an exemplary potential of being designated as a site for perfect establishment of a National Geopark. The paper is aimed to describe the geological significance of the sites with basic concept of creation of geoparks and promote geotourism. The financial, infrastructural aspects, deliverables to the society are presented primarily focusing on the local economic and sustainable development of Kutch. The need for development of infrastructure for geotourism is urgently required as the rare geological heritage of Kutch region is eroding and being destroyed due to manmade activities.
