Impact of Investor sentiment on Mean-Variance Tradeoff in Pakistan

Abstract: Impact of investor sentiments on mean variance trade off with respect to Pakistani market has been investigated in this paper. Composite index for Investor Sentiments for Karachi stock exchange is developed. The six measures incorporated in the composite investor sentiment index are closed end fund discount, KSE turnover, the number of IPOs, average first day returns of IPOs, equity share in new issues and dividend premium. We find that the stock markets returns is not significantly related to low sentiments period variance rather it is negatively related to high sentiments period variance.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of presence of fluid within and around a poroelastic circular cylindrical shell of infinite extent on axially symmetric vibrations. The frequency equation each for a pervious and an impervious surface is obtained employing Biot’s theory. Radial vibrations and axially symmetric shear vibrations are uncoupled when the wavenumber is vanished. The propagation of axially symmetric shear vibrations is independent of presence of fluid within and around the poroelastic cylindrical shell while the radial vibrations are affected by the presence of fluid. The frequencies of radial vibrations and axially symmetric shear vibrations are the cut-off frequencies for the coupled motion of axially symmetric vibrations. The non-dimensional phase velocity as a function of ratio of thickness to wavelength is computed and presented graphically for two different types of poroelastic materials for thin poroelastic shell, thick poroelastic shell and poroelastic solid cylinder.

Abstract: Emesis, also known as nausea and vomiting, are common symptoms associated with ingestion of toxicants, drug side effects, advanced terminal diseases such as cancer and postoperative procedures. Emesis is mediated through the coordinated action of central and peripheral regulatory centres that involve receptors including dopamine Type 2, serotonin, muscarinic cholinergic, histamine, cannabinoids and NK-1 receptors. Many anti-emetic drugs targeting these receptors are currently in use but they also cause undesirable side effects such as excessive sedation, hypotension, dry mouth, dysphoria, hallucinations and extrapyramidal signs. This review highlights the pharmacological mechanism of emesis and current antiemtic drugs together with detailed analysis of in vitro and in vivo anti-emetic bioassay models. The pharmacology of crude natural products extracts and purified anti-emetic compounds (cannabinoids, chalcones, diarylheptanoids, flavonoids, hydroxycinnamic acids, lignans, phenylpropanoids, polysaccharides, saponins, terpenes and glycosidic derivatives) are also systematically presented with their mechanism of action. The potential of natural products as sources of new clinically proven anti-emetic drugs are discussed
On Axially Symmetric Vibrations of Fluid Filled Poroelastic Spherical Shells  [PDF]

Abstract: Employing Biot’s theory of wave propagation in liquid saturated porous media, waves propagating in a hollow poroelastic closed spherical shell filled with fluid are studied. The frequency equation of axially symmetric vibrations for a pervious and an impervious surface is obtained. Free vibrations of a closed spherical shell are studied as a particular case when the fluid is vanished. Frequency as a function of ratio of thickness to inner radius is computed in absence of dissipation for two types of poroelastic materials each for a pervious and an impervious surface. Results of previous works are obtained as a particular case of the present study.
Evaluation of S1 and S2 Progenies of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) For Seed Yield, its Components and Resistance to Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)

Abstract: Mean squares from analysis of variance revealed significant differences among S1 and S2 progenies evaluated for seed yield, its components and resistance to charcoal rot disease. Mean, range and coefficient of variation indicated that S1 and S2 progenies of "UAF" random mated sunflower population contained larger amounts of variability for all traits. The estimates of genotypic variance were smaller than their corresponding phenotypic variances, revealing presence of environmental components. The genotypic variances among S1 and S2 progenies were significant for all the traits evaluated by testing with their respective standard error. The estimates of environmental variances for indicated traits among S1 and S2 progenies remained low in value compared to their respective genotypic and phenotypic variances. The estimates of broad-sense heritability for all the traits evaluated were comparatively greater among S2 progenies. However, the heritability of all plant traits when tested with their respective standard error when found to be significant for both S1 and S2 progenies.
Seroprevalence of Dengue Virus IgG among Children 1 - 15 Years, Selected from an Urban Population in Karachi, Pakistan: Population Based Study  [PDF]

Abstract:

Objectives: This was to estimate the proportion of Dengue virus specific IgG ELISA among asymptomatic children between the ages of 1 year to 15 years, residing in an urban population of Karachi. Design: Cross-sectional study. Settings: Subjects were selected from Garden, Karachi; an urban area located adjacent to the Central district of Karachi. Participants: Children of ages 1 year to 15 years, of either sex, residing in the urban area of Garden, Karachi for more than 1 year were selected for the study. Those with a history of yellow fever or using corticosteroids within 1 month of recruitment were excluded. Outcome measures: Data were collected on socioeconomic status of households, medical history, including previous dengue infection, general examination findings and anthropometric indices. Blood samples were collected and sent to Research Laboratories, AKU for determining complete blood counts and serum IgG antibodies for Dengue. All collected information was then analyzed for ascertaining the predicting factors for positive IgG among children less than 15 years. Results: From a total of 900 subjects, 46% were found to have positive IgG in their bloods. Our results revealed that a male child of age more than 10 years was more likely to be IgG positive. Other risk factors identified with the seropositivity included lower household income and absence of anemia, thrombocytopenia and lack of hand washing. Conclusions: The study indicated a significant proportion of children under 15-year-old infected with Dengue virus, with a potential risk of severe complications, if re-infected with dengue. Stringent measures are still needed by both public and private authorities to contain dengue outbreaks, and reducing the proportion of associated mortality, as seen in the previous years. Trend and Periodicity of Temperature Time Series in Ontario  [PDF]

Abstract: The trends and periodicities in the annual and seasonal temperature time series at fifteen weather stations within Ontario Great Lakes Basins have been analyzed, for the period 1941-2005, using the statistical analyses (Fourier series analysis, t-test, and Mann-Kendall test). The stations were spatially divided into three regions: northwest (NW), southwest (SW), and southeast (SE) to evaluate spatial variability in temperature. The results of the study reveal that the annual maximum mean temperature showed increasing trend for NW, and mixed trends for SW and SE regions. The variability was found to be more for northern stations as compared to southern stations for annual extreme minimum temperature. In addition, the trend slope per 100 years for the average annual extreme minimum temperature increased within the range of -0.8°C (Stratford) to 15°C (Porcupine). The seasonal analysis demonstrated that extreme maximum temperature has an increasing trend and maximum mean temperature has a decreasing trend during summer and winter. The extreme minimum temperature for winter illustrated an increasing trend (90%) with 22% statistically significant for NW region. For the SW region, the trend is also increasing (80%) for most of the temperature variables and 25% of temperature data were significantly increased in the SW region. The SE region stations showed overall very clear increasing trends (95%) for all the temperature variables. The data also showed that 47% of data were statistically significant in the SE region. The analysis of variance accounted for by trend, significant periodicities, and random component show that the pattern is similar for the percent of variance accounted for periodicities, and random component contribute dominantly for the four temperature variables and frost free days (FFD) for all three regions. Overall, the study reveals that the extreme minimum temperature is increasing annually and seasonally, with statistically significant at many stations.
Vitamin A Deficiency Among School Children of Bareilly: Crucial Role of Nutrition Education

Abstract: Objectives: To find out the prevalence of VAD among urban school children of District Bareilly, to identify the associated biosocial factors and to suggest the suitable measures to prevent xerophthalmia among them. Methods: Six month cross sectional study was conducted among school going children in 2 purposively selected schools in an urban area of Bareilly District. A structured proforma was used to collect the information. Chi- square test was used to analyze data. Results: Of the 800 children examined, the overall prevalence of VAD was found to be 6.37%. The prevalence of VAD was highest in 11-12 years of age group children and lowest in the 3-5 years age group (P-value >.05). The prevalence of VAD was slightly higher among boys as compared to girls (P-value >.05). The prevalence of VAD was significantly higher among the children belonging to lower socioeconomic class as compared to those belonging to upper and middle socioeconomic class (P-value >.05). Nearly 48.5% of children were found to be underweight while 12.25% were overweight. Nearly a quarter of children were found to be anemic. Conclusion: Nutrition education regarding regular intake of plant foods rich in carotene such as green leafy vegetables, yellow fruits, carrots and animal foods containing retinol like fish liver oil, fish, liver, egg, meat, milk, butter, cheese, and use of fortified food like vanaspati, margarine, dried skimmed milk should be strengthened. Correlation among S1 and S2 Progenies of Sunflower for Seed Yield, its Components and Resistance to Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina) Disease

Abstract: Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients in 150 each S1 and S2 progenies of sunflower derived from random mated sunflower UAF population were studied. The estimates of genetic correlation coefficients were found greater in value than the phenotypic correlation coefficients for all the indicated traits for both S1 and S2 progenies of sunflower. Among S1 progenies of sunflower, seed yield was found positively and significantly correlated with all the traits studied at both phenotypic and genetic levels except with oil content which was positive but non-significant, at genetic level. Oil yield also showed positive and significant correlation with all the traits both at phenotypic and genetic levels but oil content showed positive and significant correlation with days to flowering, days to maturity, internodal length and 100-achene weight at phenotypic level and with days to flowering, days to maturity and 100-achene weight at genetic level. Among S2 progenies of sunflower seed yield also showed almost similar results as of S1 progenies. Among S1 progenies, internal disease score was found positively but non significantly correlated with all the indicated traits at both phenotypic and genetic levels except head diameter which was found negatively correlated at phenotypic and genetic levels. Among S2 progenies, internal disease score showed positive and significant correlation with most of the traits showing that S2 progenies have more resistance to charcoal rot than S, progenies.
