Abstract: We report two female patients with de novo chromosome 2 cytogenetically visible deletions, one of them with an additional de novo deletion in chromosome 20p12.2p12.3. Patient I presents a 16.8?Mb deletion in 2q31.2q32.3 while patient II presents a smaller deletion of 7?Mb in 2q32.1q32.3, entirely contained within patient I deleted region, and a second 4?Mb deletion in Alagille syndrome region. Patient I clearly manifests symptoms associated with the 2q31.2q32.3 deletion syndrome, like the muscular phenotype and behavioral problems, while patient II phenotype is compatible with the 20p12 deletion since she manifests problems at the cardiac level, without significant dysmorphisms and an apparently normal psychomotor development.Whereas Alagille syndrome is a well characterized condition mainly caused by haploinsufficiency of JAG1 gene, with manifestations that can range from slight clinical findings to major symptoms in different domains, the 2q31.2q32.3 deletion syndrome is still being delineated. The occurrence of both imbalances in reported patient II would be expected to cause a more severe phenotype compared to the individual phenotype associated with each imbalance, which is not the case, since there are no manifestations due to the 2q32 deletion. This, together with the fact that patient I deleted region overlaps previously reported cases and patient II deletion is outside this common region, reinforces the existence of a critical region in 2q31.3q32.1, between 181 to 185?Mb, responsible for the clinical phenotype.

Abstract: the increasing awareness, in many countries, of the importance of the forest brought a renewed interest in forest stands either for timber or bark production or for their environmental, ecological, aesthetic, recreation, social and cultural roles. in this context changes have been introduced in the management of the forest stands in order to implement silvicultural models that promote uneven aged and mixed structures, which are better suited to the multiplicity of productions of these forest stands. the silvicultural models, which were initially developed for pure even aged stands, may have to be adapted to this new reality. this study presents the general silvicultural models at regional forest planning level, which promote the alteration of structure and composition of the stands. however it should be pointed out, that for certain sites and for certain productions pure stands are better suited.

Abstract: in the frame of the regional forest planning plans, homogeneous zones were identified, based on the landscape units defined by abreu et al. (2004), being their homogeneity confirmed as function of the ecological zones of albuquerque (1954), altimetry, relief form, lithology and soil diagnosis characteristics. in each of these zones the five functionalities assigned, namely production, range grazing and game, protection, conservation and recreation, were ranked. the methodology of functionality ranking per homogeneous zone is an algorithm, of statistical basis, which takes into account as parameters the occupied area, the average and the standard deviation per functionality and the product of the average by the area. the different functionalities coexist in the same territory revealing complementarities, contributing thus to the multi-benefit systems sustainability, where mediterranean species are preponderate.

Abstract: multiple use systems are characterised by the presence of several cultures in a management unit. these cultures present their own characteristics and several productions, with different spatial and temporal arrangements. in alentejo the most representative systems, in terms of area, are the "montados", agro-silvo-pastoral systems, characterised by three main components, forest, agriculture and grazing, and the interrelations among them. in these systems the grazing component and, consequently, the pasture is a fundamental activity for the system maintenance/perpetuity. the goal of this study is to create a methodology that defines the forage aptitude of the "montado", as function of the soil and forest cover. the utilisation of spatial analysis processes, in geographical information systems, allowed the development of an innovative methodology, constituting an evaluation and implementation information tool.
Defini??o de Modelos de Silvicultura à Escala dos Planos de Ordenamento Florestal

Silva Lusitana , 2008,
Abstract: the goal of a general silvicultural model is to materialise the production according to a set of techniques of forest stands management. silvicultural models were initially developed at the stand level, and latter at management unit level. the development of general silvicultural models at the regional forest planning level brings new challenges, as the degree of abstraction, in what concerns the management operations, is larger. on the other hand, the silvicultural models were initially developed for pure even aged stands, and later for uneven aged and mixed stands. it should also be pointed out that the actual tendency is for a multi-functional management, where the several productions have to be considered and the model has to be flexible, in order to follow both the tree and stand development and also the market fluctuations.
Defini??o de Zonas de Aptid?o para Espécies Florestais com Base em Características Edafo-Climáticas

Abstract: the species ecological-cultural characteristics give indications of their adaptability for different edafo-climatic conditions. in classical silviculture, aptitude is defined by the site quality index, according to the forest stands. the methodology presented in this article has the main goal of defining the aptitude areas, for different species, only as a function of the ecologico-cultural characteristics of the species and the edafo-climatic characteristics of the site, enhancing its use independently of the presence of forest stands. the definition of potential aptitude areas allows the detailed characterisation and evaluation, in terms of biophysical aptitude, giving an important contribution to the process of decision making. on the other hand, the implemented spatial analysis processes constitute an innovative contribution, in a perspective of biophysical evaluation of forest aptitude scenarios and of effective operationalisation of a wide set of information with an high level of geographical detail. in this paper the areas of potential aptitude were calculated for the five most representative species, in terms of area, for alto alentejo, namely cork oak, holm oak, umbrella pine, maritime pine and eucalyptus.

Abstract: the sustainability of a system depends on its capacity of not overcoming the resilience of each of its components. so the risk of erosion, susceptibility and soil loss tolerance evaluates the soil resilience against the erosion agents, and measures the system productive potential. from the universal soil loss equation a soil erosion risk model was developed, and later implemented considering the soil loss tolerance according to fao methodology, which takes in account soil depth and parent material characteristics, using a geographic information system. this development resulted in a methodology that evaluates the forest system sustainability based on soil and forest cover characteristics. this allowed to measure the forest systems productive potential.

Abstract: This article analysis four North-American films about teachers produced between 1950 and 1970 in which the role of female and male teachers are highlighted. In addition to the fi lm analysis, the research included the historical context and the academic curricula of the periods under study, the specific references of each film (plays, romance, biographies that were the origins of the productions), scripts, research in video rent stores and the contact with collectors. The outcomes allowed us to notice the decline of teachers′ hierarchic authority as well as point out some ambiguities in the representation of female and male models that were adapted to the political-ideological intentionality of each historical period.

Abstract: there has been an increase in chronic diseases affecting the population not only in the world but also in brazil. hypertension and obesity fit this context, including among early age individuals. this paper aims at investigating the prevalence of hypertension among obese children and adolescents, checking its manifestation in compliance with gender and age. the study involved 129 obese individuals, ages ranging from 7 to 14 years, both sexes. the evaluation consisted of anthropometric measures and blood pressure measurements. the data were then analysed statistically through bioestat 3.0 program, which indicated the prevalence of hypertension in both sexes (male = 15.8% and female = 26.4%), with no significant differences between each other. the disease was also present in the different age groups, especially among those aged 13 to 14 (52.4%), who were statistically different from other age groups, which, in turn, were not different from each other. this led to the conclusion that hypertension was remarkably present in the investigated population, indicating that the obesity can interfere in the elevation of the children's blood pressure and adolescents.
