Abstract: At NISER-IoP detector laboratory an initiative is taken to build and test Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors for ALICE experiment. The optimisation of the gas flow rate and the long-term stability test of the GEM detector are performed. The method and test results are presented.

Abstract: This paper presents the synthesis of epoxy based Multiwalled Carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) reinforced composites by method of sonication. The variation in the nature of reinforcement (Aligned & Randomly oriented MWNTS) has resulted in the improvement of mechanical properties like flexural modulus, tensile strength and hardness. A small change in chemical treatment of the nanotubes has a great effect in the mechanical and morphological properties of nanocomposites due to effective load transfer mechanism and state of dispersion. The change in properties has been verified by optical microscopy and Scanning electron microscopy. Apart from that the prepared composites has been treated under different temperatures (like hot water, room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature) and the change in mechanical as well as morphological nature has been verified by SEM of Fractographic surface this proved the elasticity and ductility of the composites.
A Finite Element Study of Elastic-Plastic Hemispherical Contact Behavior against a Rigid Flat under Varying Modulus of Elasticity and Sphere Radius  [PDF]

Abstract: The present study considers a finite element analysis of elastic-plastic axi-symmetric hemispherical contact for a frictionless deformable sphere pressed by a rigid flat. The material of the sphere is modeled as elastic perfectly plastic. Analysis is carried out to study the effect of varying modulus of elasticity and sphere radius in wide range of dimensionless interference until the inception of plasticity as well as in plastic range. Results are compared with previous elastic-plastic models. It is found that materials with Young’s modulus to yield strength (E/Y) ratio less than and greater than 300 show strikingly different contact phenomena. The dependency of E on dimensionless interference at which the plastic region fully covers the surface is observed. However with different radius, finite element study exhibits similar elastic-plastic phenomena.

Abstract:

Conversion of forest to agricultural fields has become a common practice in India. Very often these fields have been abandoned due to lack of sustainable production. In course of time these fallow lands undergo natural secondary succession. Present study was carried out to find out the restoration of soil physicochemical and biochemical properties in a chronosequence of 2 yr, 4 yr, 6 yr, 11 yr, and 15 yr fallow lands. Soil enzyme activities play key roles in the biochemical functioning of soils, including soil organic matter formation and degradation, nutrient cycling, and reflect the change in soil management and land use. There was gradual improvement in the physical condition and nutrient status along with increase in soil amylase, cellulase, dehydrogenase, phophatase, and urease activity in the present study with the progress of fallow age which indicates the importance of natural secondary succession in soil restoration. However the PCA analysis indicated that natural vegetational succession could reclaim the soil quality and promote ecosystem restoration but it required a long time under the present local climatic condition.

Abstract:

This study reports the morphological, anatomical and agar content difference among various species of Gracilaria. The cortex was found 1-2 layered in G. edulis and G. eucheumatoides whereas 5-6 layered in G. foliifera and G. crassa. The medulla was 6-8 layered in G. edulis, 10-11 layered in G. foliifera, 14-15 layered in G. eucheumatoides and 8-10 layered in G. crassa. Similarly, distinct variations were observed in the structure of cystocarp of these taxa. Abstract: The objective of this study was to ascertain the management accountant’s (MA) usage of smartphone for professional networking purposes. The study was conducted during mid-2017 to mid-2018 using a partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique. The study included a sample of 168 management accountants from India. The study found out that the enjoyment of professional networking activity (EPA) has a direct significant effect on the perceived value of smartphone professional networking service (PVSP) and that the perceived risk (PR) had a significant negative effect on the trust in advice acquired from a smartphone professional networking service (TCASP). As expected, privacy concerns (PC) had a significant direct effect on the perceived risks (PR). The PVSP had a direct positive effect on TCASP. Finally, it was observed that PR mediates the relationship between PC and TCASP. Thus, this study contributes by bringing new empirical insights on the actual usage of mobile technology for professional networking purposes in an emerging market context and has significant ramifications for providers of such services.

Abstract:
Purpose of the Study: This paper aims to study the impact of Long Term Settlements, (LTS) which are considered to be instrumental in maintaining long term harmonious industrial relations in the organizations, by the Actors of Industrial Relations. The critical role played by such an instrument had been accepted in the available literature on the subject. But on its control mechanisms of maintaining long term harmonious industrial relations, the existing literature provides a limited insight. Data/Methodology: This study utilized a qualitative methodology and makes use of the inputs received from the respondents interviewed on the impacts of LTS in the emerging industrial context and industrial relations dynamics. The data collected from the interview were outcome of the experience in dealing in the organizational contexts where an LTS is in execution between the Management and the Trade union. Findings: In LTS, the parties get involve in social dialogue (both the trade union and the management) while having their respective interest in the LTS which helps in generating alternatives consistent with their interests. The LTS are social process of emerging to mutually acceptable norms on the payment of wages to the workers by the management for specific return on business, which is regulated under a dynamic context. The social dialogue and collective bargaining are the instruments to LTS both for the Management and the trade union. Abstract: Endophytic bacteria colonizing the shoot-tips of banana cv. Grand Naine were isolated and tested for the antagonistic activity against the Panama wilt pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc). Pre-isolation, the suckers were given extensive disinfection treatments and the homogenate from the excised shoot-tip portion was plated on nutrient agar (NA) and trypticase soy agar (TSA). This yielded altogether 47 isolates: 26 on NA and 21 on TSA, respectively, from the 10 suckers collected during August to February. The number of bacterial isolates obtained per sucker varied from one to 15 based on colony characteristics registering up to 10 distinct species per shoot-tip based on 16S rRNA sequence analysis. The 47 isolates belonged to 19 genera and 25 species under the phylogenetic classes of Actinobacteria, α- and γ-Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. Actinobacteria constituted the predominant phylum (55% isolates) with the constituent genera of Arthrobacter, Brevibacterium, Corynebacterium, Curtobacterium, Kocuria, Kytococcus, Micrococcus, Naumanella, Rothia and Tessaracoccus spp. and an unidentified isolate belonging to the family Frankiaceae. Proteobacteria constituted the second major phylum (Brevundimonas, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, Serratia and Sphingomonas spp.) followed by Firmicutes (Bacillus and Staphylococcus spp.). Antagonistic activity of the endophytes against Foc was tested through agar plate assays (pit and spot applications on fungal lawn) employing potato dextrose agar and NA. Abstract: This paper provides an overview of recent advances reported in literature in ceramics matrix composites research in the context of reinforcement with carbon nanotubes. Current state of research has indicated the potential of these nanocomposites but at the same time, has illustrated the significant challenges in processing and improving properties. Fundamental work in processing, characterization and analysis is important before the structural properties of this new class of nanocomposites can be optimized. The fields of the nanocomposite materials have received a lot of attention and close scrutiny of scientists and engineers in recent years. This scrutiny results from the simple premise that using building blocks with dimensions in the nanometer range makes it possible to design and create new materials with unprecedented flexibility. The driving force behind the fabrication of novel nanocomposites is to achieve high functional properties for high end applications.
The Atomic Views of Flat Supply Chains in China

Abstract: China's domestic supply chain networks are getting flat and unbalanced despite its spectacular growth and rise to the enviable position in the global supply chain arena in recent times. The aftermath of continued investment explosion, especially in the coastal areas of the mainland, calls for an interwoven relationship of Chinese companies with the rest of the global supply chains. However, with new information and communication technologies, the real-time problems arising from this flattened supply chains are much more complex, multifaceted and multidimensional. China needs to re-think and re-focus on better alignment to the western values and cultures while managing its global business activities. This paper discusses four recently developed enterprise models in the light of several case studies conducted recently in Australia, China and India to characterise these new flat supply chains: People-Centric, Molecular Organization, Globally Dispersed and Disaggregated Value Chain. These, apparently different but inherently similar models have a vibrant architecture and system behaviour in their core and propose an alternative approach to address challenges of unbalanced domestic flat supply chains in China and helps the Chinese manufacturers to explore an approach to embrace Western values and cultures by enlarging their sphere of influence.
