Local transport measurements on epitaxial graphene

Abstract: Growth of large-scale graphene is still accompanied by imperfections. By means of a four-tip STM/SEM the local structure of graphene grown on SiC(0001) was correlated with scanning electron microscope images and spatially resolved transport measurements. The systematic variation of probe spacings and substrate temperature has clearly revealed two-dimensional transport regimes of Anderson localization as well as of diffusive transport. The detailed analysis of the temperature dependent data demonstrates that the local on-top nano-sized contacts do not induce significant strain to the epitaxial graphene films.
Revealing the atomic structure of the buffer layer between SiC(0001) and epitaxial graphene

Abstract: On the SiC(0001) surface (the silicon face of SiC), epitaxial graphene is obtained by sublimation of Si from the substrate. The graphene film is separated from the bulk by a carbon-rich interface layer (hereafter called the buffer layer) which in part covalently binds to the substrate. Its structural and electronic properties are currently under debate. In the present work we report scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies of the buffer layer and of quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene (QFMLG) that is obtained by decoupling the buffer layer from the SiC(0001) substrate by means of hydrogen intercalation. Atomic resolution STM images of the buffer layer reveal that, within the periodic structural corrugation of this interfacial layer, the arrangement of atoms is topologically identical to that of graphene. After hydrogen intercalation, we show that the resulting QFMLG is relieved from the periodic corrugation and presents no detectable defect sites.
Revealing the electronic band structure of trilayer graphene on SiC: An angle-resolved photoemission study

Abstract: In recent times, trilayer graphene has attracted wide attention owing to its stacking and electric field dependent electronic properties. However, a direct and well-resolved experimental visualization of its band structure has not yet been reported. In this work, we present angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data which show with high resolution the electronic band structure of trilayer graphene obtained on {\alpha}-SiC(0001) and {\beta}-SiC(111) via hydrogen intercalation. Electronic bands obtained from tight-binding calculations are fitted to the experimental data to extract the interatomic hopping parameters for Bernal and rhombohedral stacked trilayers. Low energy electron microscopy (LEEM) measurements demonstrate that the trilayer domains extend over areas of tens of square micrometers, suggesting the feasibility of exploiting this material in electronic and photonic devices. Furthermore, our results suggest that on SiC substrates the occurrence of rhombohedral stacked trilayer is significantly higher than in natural bulk graphite.
Evidence for superconductivity in Li-decorated monolayer graphene

Abstract: Monolayer graphene exhibits many spectacular electronic properties, with superconductivity being arguably the most notable exception. It was theoretically proposed that superconductivity might be induced by enhancing the electron-phonon coupling through the decoration of graphene with an alkali adatom superlattice [Profeta et al. Nat. Phys. 8, 131-134 (2012)]. While experiments have indeed demonstrated an adatom-induced enhancement of the electron-phonon coupling, superconductivity has never been observed. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) we show that lithium deposited on graphene at low temperature strongly modifies the phonon density of states, leading to an enhancement of the electron-phonon coupling of up to $\lambda\!\simeq\!0.58$. On part of the graphene-derived $\pi^*$-band Fermi surface, we then observe the opening of a $\Delta\!\simeq\!0.9$ meV temperature-dependent pairing gap. This result suggests for the first time, to our knowledge, that Li-decorated monolayer graphene is indeed superconducting with $T_c\!\simeq\!5.9 K$.
The privatization of health and the defense of the public system in Quebec, Canada

Abstract: The Canadian health care system – known as “Medicare” or “Assurance-maladie” in Quebec – was created to ensure Canadians free access to health care services and medications. The health system is both publicly funded and administered. It has been built on five principles laid out in the Canada Health Act (1984); these are: Public Administration, Comprehensiveness, Universality, Portability, and Accessibility. In sum, the right to health has been at the organizational core of the Canadian health system. Provinces and territories administer and deliver most of the health services in Canada. This is done through provincial and territorial health insurance plans which are required to follow the national principles set out in the Canada Health Act. Since its creation, the Canadian health care system has undergone important changes and reforms. However, until a few years ago each major reform of the system retained the principles of justice and equity as core values. Quebec adopted the Health and Social Services Act in December 1971. The Quebec health care system was established with a mandate to maintain, improve, and restore the health and well-being of the entire Quebec population, making health and social services accessible to all. Health and social services in Quebec are administered jointly. This specificity, which has been adopted by other health care systems, has the advantage of allowing a comprehensive response to the health and social needs of the population. Since the 80s there has been a worldwide trend towards the privatization of public services. In order to describe developments in the Quebec health care system, we interviewed Dr Marie-Claude Goulet (M-CG), chair of the organization Médecins québécois pour le régime public (MQRP) [Quebec Physicians for a Public System] , an organization campaigning against the commercialization of health care in Quebec. The MQRP is an umbrella organization made up of various groups from Quebec province; it is part of the larger Canadian Doctors for Medicare (CDM) network. CDM was created in May of 2006 because of physician concerns about the trend towards privatization of the country’s health care services. As a member of ALAMES North America, I was interested in hearing the perspective of a Latin American working in the Quebec health care system. How did the experience of privatization in a Latin American country compare to what is currently taking place in Quebec? To this end I interviewed Dr Fernando álvarez (FA), an Argentinian pediatrician who had worked in the Children’s Hospital in Buenos Aires. For the

Biogenic speleothems: an overview.

Abstract: The idea that speleothems may be somehow influenced by living organisms is rather old, but specific studies have only started in the last few decades and presently there are only a couple of systematic papers on this topic. The role of micro-organisms is perhaps the best investigated even if it is not fully understood, while studies over upper organisms and speleothems in a cavern environment are scarce and details are not always given on the involved genetic mechanisms. The aim of the present paper is to give an updated overview on these topics in order to enhance the interest of the scientific community. In fact the complex biochemical reactions involved in the development of the different cave deposits, though still not well understood, clearly have an interest and an importance far exceeding the simple speleogenetic interest.
Speleothems and cave minerals in gypsum caves

Abstract: For many years gypsum karst was considered to contain little of interest from the point of view of chemical deposits. Relatively recently a general study of speleothems has begun within gypsum karst areas in different climatic zones around the world. So far this ongoing research has shown that gypsum karst can be very interesting in terms of its contained chemical deposits. In this chapter, all that is currently known about speleothems in gypsum caves is reported systematically, and the distinctive climatic control over them is emphasised.
